Slipping the first stitch helps make a nice selvedge, but doesn't solve the tube problem. If you're working on a garment, no problem because you'll be seaming it up. If it's a scarf prepare for a roll.

thank you for posting this, my stockinette stitch always ended up like a tube, but slipping the first stitch seems to get rid of that. Thanks again!
