The writer (Mankell) is the fifth most read author in the world these days! I haven't seen the series on TV. Ken looks great and I am sure I would love to see the whole thing. But the books.... I cannot let go. They are absolutely wonderful! so much suspense is unreal. In America it's a lot about violence. In the north of Europe it's more about suspense. As roxamills mentioned earlier (much earlier actually), it's all about mystery and I LOVE IT! Thanks you for sharing this.
wallender is a fucking masterpiece by far one of the best things ive ever seen. its so real with its acting and crimes and just everything is so awsome and depressing :D
No one does mystery/crime drama like the Brits. These books come to life with a brilliant cast, unbelievable scripts, and stunning contemporary cinematography. American crime/drama shows have such a different beat, they are typically more about the violence, and less about the mystery. If you love this clip check out , PRIME SUSPECT with Helen Mirren, and Second Sight, staring Clive Owen. MASTERPIECE Contemporary on PBS , now at your local video store.
These flicks have done a number on Wallander's popularity, I'd say. I didn't hear of them until as of late, when a good number of American acquintances started to more or less simultaneously telling me how much they loved Wallander. Fortunately they went and read the books too. And I have to admit that I've no complaints of the films themselves either. Leave it to the British if you want a good cop film, I'd say.
im swedish and even though i love the swedish version i really love the english one to. the actors say all the names wrong of course but thats kind of funny.
perhaps people will understand that wee dont eat meatballs every day and we dont have polar beers on the street.
@ilovemuchado I asked a WHSmith woman if they got it. She never heard of it, had a look around and it was there sitting on a shelf. But I got it from Waterstones instead THEY heard of Wallander lol
I don't like the BBC license fee but as long as they keep making great detective shows like this and my favourite show Waking The Dead I'm prepared to put up with it.
I love the gruff way Branagh delivers his opening word in this show (and series).
This is an outstanding piece of work from BBC Scotland under the leadership of Anne Mensah.
BBC Scotland is going to be the long awaited British answer to HBO, FX, & Showtime thanks to her.
BAM! Take that Julie Gardner & BBC Wales!
Though, we do love you lots too Julie :D
I loved Wallander, I hope they make more! But at £2million an episode... will they? It's been a big moneyspinner for BBC Worldwide - it even sold to other countries before it had aired in the UK!
No need to hate saying it. It's clear even to me that they manage to produce some great stuff precisely because they needn't worry about their advertising income. (And I'm an American, by the by.)
I'm a little disapointed that Branagh is not driving a classic Volvo Amazon or at least the Volvo that Roger Moore used to drive in The Saint. Surely it would say to the world 'Hey I'm a little unconventional'
Wow, I actually know someone who did this; well, I knew their father and he did it...horrible! They never got over it. This scene is wonderfully shot. I like the credits, too. I can't wait to see this whole series. It is a winne; Branagh is brilliant! Thanks for posting it.

I usually love my country dearly, but Showcase is the only channel in Canada that gets Wallander, and only then inconsistently.

@dreamingpixles Depends where in Canada you are, I live in Ontario and pick it up from PBS

Anyone looking for the ringtone from Wallander, I can send it to them. The original, and the edited one, without the 'beep-beep' at the end.

I didn't know that Mankell's books are known in the UK as well. I only know the Swedish versions.

I don't think they're extremely well known - however, this series should attract more Wallander fans.

I totally agree.

Yet again the BBC has produced a cracking detective series - right up there with Waking the Dead, Silent Witness and Dalziel and Pascoe.
I hate to say it but this is only because of the unique way the BBC is funded.

Does anyone know what the theme tune is called and who it's by?
PaleEnchantress01 3 years ago
It's called 'Nostalgia' by Emily Barker. She has a site on MySpace that'll give you more details.
Sounds a bit like Beth Orton or maybe PJ Harvey.

'Emily Barker and the Red Clay Halo' - the song's off their latest album, 'Despite the Snow'. Catch them in London - beautiful live gigs.
