First it was in 1920 then 1991 and now in 2008. Ossetia historically never belonged to Georgia. Stalin(which was originally georgian) devided Ossetia in notheren and southern parts and gave the southern part to his motherland Georgia.So, this conflict has very deep historical roots and Russia has been presented in here as the guarantor of order and safty.Otherwise georgian had already cleaned off all the ossetians.
