@plangentmusic Nope, Araya's basically just playing quarter notes and eighth notes to complement each hit on the kick drum. Gives the song a nice headbanging feel...this version is sick, but for the most part it wouldn't be realistic given that Araya's actually expected to sing in addition to playing. Gotta tell ya, it ain't easy singing while playing fast shit like that on bass! :)
Damn I need to give the bass more respect and Arayas bass playing...Araya is fucking awesome.....but so are you dude you rocked the ghosts of war into hiding with your monster bass playing
Damn man, you always inspire me to pick up my bass and play, R.I.P. man I still watch your videos and I still crap myself wishing I had half your talent.
Hey man youre to be honest then youre awesome! You play the song really good it sounds professionel! I voted up this video beacause you are amazing at this!
What's your method to record the sounds? Do you use a mixer or what... I'm just assuming you don't play bass on top of CD-track and recording the sounds with a webcam? :DD
@Albee213 not just thrash bands! I can't hear the bass at all in a lot of bands today, especially the "you know what genre" bands. Can't say it on a Slayer vid.
@ghostwhiskey He was truly fantastic, he had so much knowledge and loved to play, he was like the bass teacher i never actually had, the reason i say that is because i'm self-taught myself. but Rob here was absolutely fantastic and i never forget his teachings
It seems like your using a pick, which is new to me for a bass player. i'm not a bassist, but all the ones I've been a band with either slapped or fingered. interesting
I will never forget you Rob, you were like the bass teacher i never had, thank you for your help, you were fantastic, i will never forget you thanks for your un-dying friendship, Rest In Peace my friend, and thanks again :'(
So what if you are getting old? This doesn't affect your playing.Except if you have Parkinson's disease which would make you a perfect player because you would play fast and insane because of all the trembling!
Man you hit the strings fuckign hard. Reminds me of me quite a bit too. I use 3mm picks to dig in there and help my attack. That and being used to playing on a .110 E string makes me hit the strings hard,.
I was reading the comments for this video and you said that you knew some Sodom. Could you maybe do a song for us, please? Sodom is one of my favorite speed metal bands and I would love to see a rendition of it on bass. If not, then thanks anyway.
I watched every video of you and I have to say, you are probably the most talented bassist on youtube! I´m paying bass since three years and your videos often inspired me to play in a different way than you hear it in the original tune.. (like your description of "rendition").

2. An interpretation of a musical score or a dramatic piece.
3. A performance of a musical or dramatic work.
4. A translation, often interpretive.

A "cover" would e an attempt to play the tune like the original. I am not faithful enough to use that word....I pretty much play it differently each time I play a song, so one instance of me playing any tune is a "rendition".
Thanks. Notwithstanding the rarity of fame, a musician's career is often short, a few years in the spotlight if they are lucky....and to be honest, I am far from a knowlegable musician. I went to college and got a Ph.D. in entomology instead...that pays for a lifetime.
It takes a special breed to want to sacrifice that much to do music for a career. I salute them, but I could never be them.
@zodiakironfist awesome job...it was almost as if you wrote it...lol, and the anser to bubba about not doing this as a job...yea you sound like my mother did when i told hr I wanted to play music...lol. Awesome job though...flawlessly played.
What's wrong with their older material with Cliff?
You should see if you can learn the song Agent Orange, it's not that hard, then again, I'm a guitarist and from what I've heard with Tom, it's just hitting the root note.
Nothing is wrong with older material from Cliff. I love Cliff. I just stay away from Metallica because I am not interested in playing them after they sold out to the record companies to give birth to the DMCA.
Sad really because I love their music, but I do not support bands that are business first, music second.
You mean when the albums were beginning to be produced by Elektra Records, who are in collaboration with Warner Bros. records, who may have caused the continuation of the Loudness War? Personally, I wouldn't mind playing something off of Kill 'Em All or ...And Justice For All, even if the whole Napster and independent label thing happened. There's a quote from Cliff Burton said that I'll never forget:
"We do what we wanna do, and if they consider it selling out, then...whatever."
LOL...yes, Angel Ripper had a lot of vox to do, and I am not hindered by that. Trust me, if I play Nuclear Winter or something similar, it will be a different bass-line than Tom's...but still the same essence. The same as I did in this video...which has another Tom known for just playing the root note with vox.
And his awesome vocals. I'm in love with his singing, I just don't know how he does it though. For like...Agent Orange, I've always wanted to sing like that for the song, but I have no clue how the hell to do it.
Well, I'm sure it helps to have a german accent, but other than that, Angel ripper would vomit and hiss his vocals. The first album is a great example...the Outbreak of Evil has all kinds of vomitous vox. He was unique, and I loved his delivery.
Thanks a bunch...I appreciate the vote of confidence. My philosophy is that if you are going to use a pick, you might as well play as fast as the guitar players.
No, I guess there aren't too many. Well, I will have to put out a couple more videos of Slayer to make up for it, then. I am already going to do Postmortem/Raining blood...but what else?
Slayer is/was an awesome band. Not exactly a bass-oriented band, but what they lacked in bass they more than made up with the other instruments. Some of the best riff writers I have ever heard...that is, if you like evil.
Yeah. Since Slayer isent very bass oriented it gives you plently of room to make the bassline your own. Agreed on some of the best riffers. Evil is good...
okay so i have to do a science fair project and play bass so i want to do something related to that, or sound waves etc. does anyone have any idea of something i could do? i know this sounds a little weird lol but i think it would give me a decent grade lol. thank you... oh and alsome video
It is a small poster that you hold up at rallies and such. I have a couple of others, as well, but the white one is the one I decided to keep up there. After working for the campaign, we have a ton of Obama stuff. It's nice...perhaps some day I can say I helped make history, but that depends on the job he does. Nevertheless I am hopeful.
Only time will tell, Im canadian and dont pay attention to politics much since im 19 and dont really care whos elected Prime Minister, More Death covers please :)
Well, I use weird terms for musical stuff because I am a musical dufus, but what I call pedal notes are the low notes of a thrash riff....usually E, but not always. For example, in the verse of this tune, the pedal note is E (1st fret for a 1/2 tuned down bass on the E string), and the pedal note for the 2nd half of the 2nd verse is the 4th fret, or G. The other notes are played around it.
f'in awesome dude, gotta love some slayer now and then. And your backround props are nice too...a piano, an ibanez guitar and a dagger on the wall LOL Speed metal suits your crazy ass style perfectly. Its crazy i tell ya....dude that sepultura would be killer.
Hey thanks Satch....not quite the tightness you achieve, though, but I'm working on it. It has been a while since I played the quick stuff.
And yeah, speed metal is actually where I developed my "crazy ass" style. We often only had one guitar player, so those fills and chords were there to take up space and make the backbone tighter (because bass following the drums sounds right in speed metal). The style just sort of stuck with me and re-emerged in lesser form for other genres of music I play.
I put that in. That's a typical Dave Lombardo fill....I just followed it. Same thing I did towards the end. Dave Lombardo plays really fast fills, though, so when I play Slayer, all of the fills I play are in the 32nd note speed range. The drums determine everything for me fill-wise....I like to follow them as closely as I can.
I think everyone can see that you still have your speed, ridiculous picking. Great to see another video from you up again, also nice Obama-Biden poster.
Well, the speed is there, but the tightness still needs work. I almost did not release this vid because I can do better on the timing, but I was pretty tired after all of the setup and inital runs, and I just wanted to see what it looked like on youtube. I was careful not to waste a really popular tune on this test, though.
And thanks about the poster comment. Some may disagree with my choice of politics, but my wife and I worked hard on the campaign and are very proud of ourselves for it.
Hey bro,GREAT TUNE, and excellent playmanship;not really a pick fan, but there are many styles of music that really require it and I will say that your pick chops are a' smokin' GREAT JOB and thanx for posting all the time!!!!!!!!
Thanks, and I know that so many do not like picks. I hope to change a few minds about that....change it to not liking LAME pick players (because I admit that most pick players are lame).
Excellente Rob! And I have the same exact memory hahaha. And you are so right that Tom focuses on the vox - I have seen them several times live and I swear Tom almost looks like he is faking the bass lines! Anyway, your bass made the song 100x better!
Well, it doesn't help that he is completely mixed out of the music. Funny thing is...on Hell Awaits, you could hear him just fine, but on later albums he became more and more quiet bass-wise. I've seen em live, too, and Tom does not do anything more than play pedal notes....disappointing. But then again, he rocks so much on his vox, we all forgive him for not being a bass guru.
Nah...Tom does a good enough job as-is, and he has two guitar players to carry the sound. I am more suited to a band that wants to play Slayer but only has one guitar player.
Those high school days were good, luckily no one got in trouble.

All of these apply (from the dictionary):
2. An interpretation of a musical score or a dramatic piece.
3. A performance of a musical or dramatic work.
4. A translation, often interpretive.
5. A surrender.
A "cover" would e an attempt to play the tune like the original. I am not faithful enough to use that word....I pretty much play it differently each time I play a song, so one instance of me playing any tune is a "rendition".

Sawtooth waves are the typical sound of the Rick.
Smooth sinosoidal waves are the sound of a warm bass.

Thanks, Ale. I have a lot of tweaking to do if I want to get it right, but I am satisfied with my tools once again.
Yeah, I'm fast, but without the right tightness, the speed doesn't come out right. I'm about 85% there.
As always, nice to see you, Ale. Any more vids coming?

85%?? wow! too much!!!
In this weekend will post another bass video, in this video I will use a active bass, and the sound is better.

f'in awesome dude, gotta love some slayer now and then.

37-41 holy sit that was crazy did u put that in or did tom araya actually play that?
MattBodossian 3 years ago
I put that in. That's a typical Dave Lombardo fill....I just followed it. Same thing I did towards the end. Dave Lombardo plays really fast fills, though, so when I play Slayer, all of the fills I play are in the 32nd note speed range. The drums determine everything for me fill-wise....I like to follow them as closely as I can.

oh i was gonna say i didnt think araya was that good.

I had some serious hardware troubles, but a camera investment and a very nice person willing to let me use their computer fixed things.

Dude you should do some stuff off of Sepultura's Arise, cuz Paulo Jr's bass is downmixed so low, its ridiculous
ultimateguitar553 3 years ago
If I did one off of Arise....it would most likely be Dead Embryonic Cells. I love that tune.

Hey bro,GREAT TUNE, and excellent playmanship;not really a pick fan, but there are many styles of music that really require it and I will say that your pick chops are a' smokin' GREAT JOB and thanx for posting all the time!!!!!!!!
BASSRUT08 3 years ago
Thanks, and I know that so many do not like picks. I hope to change a few minds about that....change it to not liking LAME pick players (because I admit that most pick players are lame).

Nice cover, man. Like to see some other Slayer stuff like Seasons or the popular ones like Angel and Raining.

\m/ Slayer! \m/
They were my favorite band when I was 16.

Excellente Rob! And I have the same exact memory hahaha. And you are so right that Tom focuses on the vox - I have seen them several times live and I swear Tom almost looks like he is faking the bass lines! Anyway, your bass made the song 100x better!
PDXguitarlegend 3 years ago
Well, it doesn't help that he is completely mixed out of the music. Funny thing is...on Hell Awaits, you could hear him just fine, but on later albums he became more and more quiet bass-wise. I've seen em live, too, and Tom does not do anything more than play pedal notes....disappointing. But then again, he rocks so much on his vox, we all forgive him for not being a bass guru.
zodiakironfist 3 years ago
Damn, Rob-maybe you should take over bass duties for Slayer and let Tom just sing-your playing was just WICKED!!!
lowend 3 years ago
Nah...Tom does a good enough job as-is, and he has two guitar players to carry the sound. I am more suited to a band that wants to play Slayer but only has one guitar player.
But thank you very kindly for the compliment.
