  • Those high school days were good, luckily no one got in trouble.

  • RIP \m/

  • That isn't what Araya is playing, right? You're elaborating on it and doubling the guitar rhythms in spots? VERY nice job! You owned it bro.

  • @plangentmusic Nope, Araya's basically just playing quarter notes and eighth notes to complement each hit on the kick drum. Gives the song a nice headbanging feel...this version is sick, but for the most part it wouldn't be realistic given that Araya's actually expected to sing in addition to playing. Gotta tell ya, it ain't easy singing while playing fast shit like that on bass! :)

  • Damn I need to give the bass more respect and Arayas bass playing...Araya is fucking awesome.....but so are you dude you rocked the ghosts of war into hiding with your monster bass playing

  • That was awesome!!!! lovin this

  • Ideal playing!!!

  • This is sick as hell !!!

  • that is one bad ass cover

    great fuckin job man

    keep ur metal head on

  • GREAT!!!

  • Angry Style.. You are Killing that Ric.

  • RIP man.... i saw slayer last night.... the best concert i ever saw.... this man here had a mighty bass sound!!!

  • dude....awesome.

  • Damn man, you always inspire me to pick up my bass and play, R.I.P. man I still watch your videos and I still crap myself wishing I had half your talent.

  • Hey man youre to be honest then youre awesome! You play the song really good it sounds professionel! I voted up this video beacause you are amazing at this!

  • one of my favorite slayer songs :)

  • ur attack FUCKIN KILLS

  • OMG, you're a beast !.

  • man you are awesome, how long have you been playing for?

  • Maestro, suena demoledor!!!!!!!!!

  • That's incredible. I would wager that you probably play this stuff better than Tom Araya does. You're basically flawless.

  • What's your method to record the sounds? Do you use a mixer or what... I'm just assuming you don't play bass on top of CD-track and recording the sounds with a webcam? :DD

  • Damn man you fucking shred!!

  • Best slayer track of alltime!! Why the hell don't they play it live??

  • This sounds better with the bass louder, SHAME on all thrash bands for not mixing the bass louder!

  • @Albee213 not just thrash bands! I can't hear the bass at all in a lot of bands today, especially the "you know what genre" bands. Can't say it on a Slayer vid.

  • @Albee213 not all thrash,just listen to anthrax,megadeth,or flotsam & jetsam...

  • FUCK YEA MAN!!!!!!!

  • awesome dude, bass power at his max !!

  • fucking brilliant !!

  • you're way better than Tom Araya

  • slayin' and shreddin'

  • Fucking aawesome song eh?

South of heaven, once of the best fucking albums of all time, maybe only just behind PEace sells

  • damn that kicked ass, that guys dead?

  • Unfortunately yes :(

  • @Ironclaw666 that sucks,i wish i wouldve known him,really

  • @ghostwhiskey He was truly fantastic, he had so much knowledge and loved to play, he was like the bass teacher i never actually had, the reason i say that is because i'm self-taught myself. but Rob here was absolutely fantastic and i never forget his teachings

  • Never saw this video, flawless play impressive thrash player. rip Rob

  • It seems like your using a pick, which is new to me for a bass player. i'm not a bassist, but all the ones I've been a band with either slapped or fingered. interesting

  • @crio39 Tom Araya ( Slayer) uses pick .

  • nice, how long you been playing bass for?

  • He's been playing since he was 13, the reason im answering is because the poor man died in January :( tis a real shame

  • pretty badass cover, nice job

  • Holy shit this guy is a beast of the bass 5 stars

  • I will never forget you Rob, you were like the bass teacher i never had, thank you for your help, you were fantastic, i will never forget you thanks for your un-dying friendship, Rest In Peace my friend, and thanks again :'(

  • great bass sound on this song makes me wanna get a rick, awsome playing too

  • RIP, you were a monster at bass.

  • Is he really gone?

  • Sadly...

  • I haven't met him personally, but that just feels like a great loss to me. YouTube needs more talent like him, RIP dude.

  • I know what you mean.

  • fucking beautiful.

  • HOLY SHIT DUDE!!!!

  • fuck yeah dude, a guy that doesn't look like he would jam to slayer, and he's using a Rickenbacker, NICE

  • fucking awesome man, that was awesome.

  • Not a big fan of bass players that use picks but I guess it still takes some skill.

  • Good job!!!

  • you should play bass for slayer

  • awesome

  • So what if you are getting old? This doesn't affect your playing.Except if you have Parkinson's disease which would make you a perfect player because you would play fast and insane because of all the trembling!

  • Man you hit the strings fuckign hard. Reminds me of me quite a bit too. I use 3mm picks to dig in there and help my attack. That and being used to playing on a .110 E string makes me hit the strings hard,.

  • For me it is 0.88mm picks and a 1.05mm E string, but the idea is the same...attack, attack, ATTACK!

  • Your are a madman. Love it.

  • holy shit dude amazing :O

  • whoa, Nice work man!

  • I was reading the comments for this video and you said that you knew some Sodom. Could you maybe do a song for us, please? Sodom is one of my favorite speed metal bands and I would love to see a rendition of it on bass. If not, then thanks anyway.

  • whats LRRG stand for?

  • Perfect.

  • wouldnt that have been sweet if tom played his parts like this it really lets the bass have a voice

  • is it true that Tom Araya is in Eb for most slayer songs?

  • Holy crap!! Brilliant.

  • Wow, that's incredible!!!!!

  • I think you're being very harsh on yourself dude, you do way better than okay

    \m/(^_^)\m/

  • Nice! Didn't miss a beat!

  • Fucking Hell. EXCEPTIONAL.

  • kick ass cover and nice musical tastes !

rock on man coz that's all we got

  • fuckin slayer

    :D

nice cover, i <3 south of heaven.

  • I watched every video of you and I have to say, you are probably the most talented bassist on youtube! I´m paying bass since three years and your videos often inspired me to play in a different way than you hear it in the original tune.. (like your description of "rendition").

Also your LRRG idea is very good ;)

Please keep up your great work and do some more Maiden!

  • Wow I didn't release the bass was that fast so Necrophobic must be crazy can you do that one? Very good awesome by the way!

  • Man.. you are one hell of a bass player!!!!

  • Dude, EXCELLENT.

Araya's bass playing is like a thunderstorm of fury, and you have just conjured that up in this vid. 5/5.

  • FUCKIN A DUDE! 6 goddamn stars!

  • fucking great man!! you're ricken backer is god!!

  • god i love slayer

  • I deal in Pain....all life I drain.....I dominate....I seal your fate!! I love slayer...good job dude

  • what does rendition mean?

  • All of these apply (from the dictionary):

    2. An interpretation of a musical score or a dramatic piece.

    3. A performance of a musical or dramatic work.

    4. A translation, often interpretive.

    5. A surrender.

A "cover" would e an attempt to play the tune like the original. I am not faithful enough to use that word....I pretty much play it differently each time I play a song, so one instance of me playing any tune is a "rendition".

  • You are just flat out amazing!

why don't you do this for a job?

  • Thanks. Notwithstanding the rarity of fame, a musician's career is often short, a few years in the spotlight if they are lucky....and to be honest, I am far from a knowlegable musician. I went to college and got a Ph.D. in entomology instead...that pays for a lifetime.

It takes a special breed to want to sacrifice that much to do music for a career. I salute them, but I could never be them.

  • @zodiakironfist awesome job...it was almost as if you wrote it...lol, and the anser to bubba about not doing this as a job...yea you sound like my mother did when i told hr I wanted to play music...lol. Awesome job though...flawlessly played.

  • Damn man you got some serious skills =)

I have been subscribing you for a while and I am truely not regreting it. =) 5/5 as usual! Good work on the "special" tune you "made" ;D

  • wow, amazing cover, really nice bass also.

  • ok? you are putting yourself down! This is awesome! Great job!

  • nice rickenbacker!

  • great rendition of my favorite Slayer song. keep' em coming.

  • You ane other talented users should be featured. 5/5 At first I thought this was fake, but you have skill. I'm a fan of guitars.

  • you totally own Araya on Bass

  • \m/ SLAYER! \m/

    Fuck yeah baby!

  • You think you could cover some Metallica material if you haven't done before? And how about some nice Sodom (Preferably Agent Orange) or some Exodus.

  • I have a long-standing no-Metallica policy, unfortunately.

Sodom I have no problem with. Even though Agent Orange was a very popular album, I know little of it. I do, however, know a lot of Persecution Mania.

Exodus...perhaps. There are a couple of tunes I like from them.

  • What's wrong with their older material with Cliff?

You should see if you can learn the song Agent Orange, it's not that hard, then again, I'm a guitarist and from what I've heard with Tom, it's just hitting the root note.

  • Nothing is wrong with older material from Cliff. I love Cliff. I just stay away from Metallica because I am not interested in playing them after they sold out to the record companies to give birth to the DMCA.

Sad really because I love their music, but I do not support bands that are business first, music second.

I do not judge others for doing so, though.

  • You mean when the albums were beginning to be produced by Elektra Records, who are in collaboration with Warner Bros. records, who may have caused the continuation of the Loudness War? Personally, I wouldn't mind playing something off of Kill 'Em All or ...And Justice For All, even if the whole Napster and independent label thing happened. There's a quote from Cliff Burton said that I'll never forget:

"We do what we wanna do, and if they consider it selling out, then...whatever."

  • Fair Enough.

  • LOL...yes, Angel Ripper had a lot of vox to do, and I am not hindered by that. Trust me, if I play Nuclear Winter or something similar, it will be a different bass-line than Tom's...but still the same essence. The same as I did in this video...which has another Tom known for just playing the root note with vox.

  • And his awesome vocals. I'm in love with his singing, I just don't know how he does it though. For like...Agent Orange, I've always wanted to sing like that for the song, but I have no clue how the hell to do it.

  • Well, I'm sure it helps to have a german accent, but other than that, Angel ripper would vomit and hiss his vocals. The first album is a great example...the Outbreak of Evil has all kinds of vomitous vox. He was unique, and I loved his delivery.

  • Like..a gutteral voice, or am I thinking something else?

  • No, you have it right. Ripper has gutteral.

  • Now if only I could find lessons for gutteral. Thing is, the gutteral voice people do is like..death.

  • Vomitous vox!!!! Dude...you are making my snow day in Ohio very enjoyable.

  • play some raboert randolph and the family band stuff lol

  • The only bass cover of this song. Well done.

  • that's amazing, you should do an Arch Enemy cover.

  • I love Slayer. Its always good to see you put up new videos, lights a fire in my passion for bass.

  • Wow, that was awesome. Plus, u strum really fast. 5/5 performance.

  • Thanks a bunch...I appreciate the vote of confidence. My philosophy is that if you are going to use a pick, you might as well play as fast as the guitar players.

  • Damn dude you were playing a lot of guitar parts on your bass. I was almost surprised when you didn't bust out the solo on bass too!

  • LOL...I'm definitely not that good. Just noodling around with the usual hit-and-miss results.

    Thanks for dropping by!

  • lol I like the Obama above your head :P

  • Yup...I'll probably have a poster here and there in my next few vids. It was a heck of an election day!

  • Very cool man. You don't get too many bass players on youtube playing Slayer. I loved how it sounded.

  • No, I guess there aren't too many. Well, I will have to put out a couple more videos of Slayer to make up for it, then. I am already going to do Postmortem/Raining blood...but what else?

  • awesome job dude, sounded great!!!!!!

  • Much appreciated!

  • Very awesome as usual.

  • Thanks.

  • kick ass

  • Fucking awesome. I love Slayer. Defiantly one of my favorites.

  • Slayer is/was an awesome band. Not exactly a bass-oriented band, but what they lacked in bass they more than made up with the other instruments. Some of the best riff writers I have ever heard...that is, if you like evil.

  • Yeah. Since Slayer isent very bass oriented it gives you plently of room to make the bassline your own. Agreed on some of the best riffers. Evil is good...

  • Man, how can you use the pick that fast? O.O

You did very well in the video! Keep rockin'!

  • Thanks.

  • PLEASE HELP!

okay so i have to do a science fair project and play bass so i want to do something related to that, or sound waves etc. does anyone have any idea of something i could do? i know this sounds a little weird lol but i think it would give me a decent grade lol. thank you... oh and alsome video

  • Sawtooth waves are the typical sound of the Rick.

Smooth sinosoidal waves are the sound of a warm bass.

Harmonics are a neato thing, too, if you can lots of information on it. I think between the harmonics and the wave-forms, you can do something decent.

  • thank you alot. i appreciate your input and you getting back to me. Ill give it some thought

  • Nice vid and poster!

  • zanks!

  • bomb man !!!

  • *ducks*

    Bomb, where?

    *dives into a foxhole*

  • 1 question whats that box ontop of your head that says Obama?? is it full of secret presidential information???

  • It is a small poster that you hold up at rallies and such. I have a couple of others, as well, but the white one is the one I decided to keep up there. After working for the campaign, we have a ton of Obama stuff. It's nice...perhaps some day I can say I helped make history, but that depends on the job he does. Nevertheless I am hopeful.

  • Only time will tell, Im canadian and dont pay attention to politics much since im 19 and dont really care whos elected Prime Minister, More Death covers please :)

  • LOL....sure. There will be more Death.

  • Yay thanks

  • wow that was tightly intense man! kick ass. idk if i sound like a n00b but, whats a pedal note?

  • Well, I use weird terms for musical stuff because I am a musical dufus, but what I call pedal notes are the low notes of a thrash riff....usually E, but not always. For example, in the verse of this tune, the pedal note is E (1st fret for a 1/2 tuned down bass on the E string), and the pedal note for the 2nd half of the 2nd verse is the 4th fret, or G. The other notes are played around it.

  • Hi, how are doing?

wow!!!!!!! what can I say......you play very fast!! excellent!!! great job!!! you are a great bassist!!!

    the new camera is good!

    have a great weekend!

    -Ale-

  • Thanks, Ale. I have a lot of tweaking to do if I want to get it right, but I am satisfied with my tools once again.

Yeah, I'm fast, but without the right tightness, the speed doesn't come out right. I'm about 85% there.

As always, nice to see you, Ale. Any more vids coming?

  • 85%?? wow! too much!!!

In this weekend will post another bass video, in this video I will use a active bass, and the sound is better.

    -Ale-

  • f'in awesome dude, gotta love some slayer now and then. And your backround props are nice too...a piano, an ibanez guitar and a dagger on the wall LOL Speed metal suits your crazy ass style perfectly. Its crazy i tell ya....dude that sepultura would be killer.

  • Hey thanks Satch....not quite the tightness you achieve, though, but I'm working on it. It has been a while since I played the quick stuff.

And yeah, speed metal is actually where I developed my "crazy ass" style. We often only had one guitar player, so those fills and chords were there to take up space and make the backbone tighter (because bass following the drums sounds right in speed metal). The style just sort of stuck with me and re-emerged in lesser form for other genres of music I play.

  • 37-41 holy sit that was crazy did u put that in or did tom araya actually play that?

  • I put that in. That's a typical Dave Lombardo fill....I just followed it. Same thing I did towards the end. Dave Lombardo plays really fast fills, though, so when I play Slayer, all of the fills I play are in the 32nd note speed range. The drums determine everything for me fill-wise....I like to follow them as closely as I can.

  • oh i was gonna say i didnt think araya was that good.

  • I think everyone can see that you still have your speed, ridiculous picking. Great to see another video from you up again, also nice Obama-Biden poster.

  • Well, the speed is there, but the tightness still needs work. I almost did not release this vid because I can do better on the timing, but I was pretty tired after all of the setup and inital runs, and I just wanted to see what it looked like on youtube. I was careful not to waste a really popular tune on this test, though.

And thanks about the poster comment. Some may disagree with my choice of politics, but my wife and I worked hard on the campaign and are very proud of ourselves for it.

  • Killer, good to see another video from you after a while! I havent had any videos to watch lately lol.

  • I had some serious hardware troubles, but a camera investment and a very nice person willing to let me use their computer fixed things.

  • Dude you should do some stuff off of Sepultura's Arise, cuz Paulo Jr's bass is downmixed so low, its ridiculous

  • If I did one off of Arise....it would most likely be Dead Embryonic Cells. I love that tune.

  • Hey bro,GREAT TUNE, and excellent playmanship;not really a pick fan, but there are many styles of music that really require it and I will say that your pick chops are a' smokin' GREAT JOB and thanx for posting all the time!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks, and I know that so many do not like picks. I hope to change a few minds about that....change it to not liking LAME pick players (because I admit that most pick players are lame).

  • ONce again you smoked it!

  • Nice cover, man. Like to see some other Slayer stuff like Seasons or the popular ones like Angel and Raining.

  • I am planning on doing postmortem/raining blood together. Probably in a month or two.

  • whoaaa this is awesome man. fucking slayerrrrrr.

i was at the front for Slayer at Unholy Alliance in London, Best gig ever.

  • \m/ Slayer! \m/

They were my favorite band when I was 16.

  • Excellente Rob! And I have the same exact memory hahaha. And you are so right that Tom focuses on the vox - I have seen them several times live and I swear Tom almost looks like he is faking the bass lines! Anyway, your bass made the song 100x better!

  • Well, it doesn't help that he is completely mixed out of the music. Funny thing is...on Hell Awaits, you could hear him just fine, but on later albums he became more and more quiet bass-wise. I've seen em live, too, and Tom does not do anything more than play pedal notes....disappointing. But then again, he rocks so much on his vox, we all forgive him for not being a bass guru.

  • Damn, Rob-maybe you should take over bass duties for Slayer and let Tom just sing-your playing was just WICKED!!!

  • Nah...Tom does a good enough job as-is, and he has two guitar players to carry the sound. I am more suited to a band that wants to play Slayer but only has one guitar player.

But thank you very kindly for the compliment.
