Roosevelts New Deal programs deepend and lengthend the depression more than Hoover's attempts. It was WWII to that helped get us out, along with cancelling most of the New Deal programs. The 70's had far more to do with the governments cutting the last ties to the gold standard than to anything the Carter administration did or didn't do and it was Volcker not Reagon who stopped the inflation with a 20% interest rate. Hoover interfered heavily with the free market and FDR made it worse with his new deal. The depression ended when the fed decided to expand the money supply to fight WW2. Greenspan created a credit bubble starting in the early 90's and still going with Bernankie.

Alot of people were reeling from the 73 fuel crisis only to be greeted with another near the end of Carter's term, the memories of the fuel lines still haunt me today. Ford on the other hand wasn't that great either but Nixon's actions haunted his term.

As much as I don't like Palin, I am full agreement with you here. Palin's family and children do not deserve to be made fun of by late night tv comedians or put under the microscope of the press. However, I do think that her own problems reflect the problem with the social conservative idea of abstinence only. If the message worked I'd be all for it, but it doesn't and the statistics bare that out. Kids need access to birth control if they are going to have sex and we can't stop them.

Because Bush called himself a fiscal conservative and talked about deregulation (when he was anything but and the markets were heavily regulated) so now most people equate bush's policies with being conservative and his regulatory policies as being free market. So when we conservatives say we want deregulation they say Bush did that and look what happened.

IMO, we should stop trying to "save face" and just admit that Bush sucked and so did the republican congress and restructure the GOP and move on. Instead, what we have seen is lies and denial. The GOP needs a shake up and I think another "contract with America" would help. We cleaned up gov spending in the 90's and then when we had complete control, all discipline went out the window and we spent like drunken sailors.

I don't criticize her education and she has a good political career. On the other hand, I don't think she's the brightest person to run for VP and her personality is annoying. She is quite pretty, especially for her age and number of kids she has. My #1 complaint with her is her religious life. She takes religion too seriously and believes that Jesus is going to return and fix everything and that is scary. I wouldn't want her to hear god tell her to invade another country or something.
