@1971SuperLead They did an appearance on the Rockline radio show around this time (late Nov. '89) and Ian said he had a case of "acute laryngitis", so that likely explains the quality of his voice in this video.
The "SWASTIKA" is infact a sign of peace...hijacked by the Nazi's. Many religions used it before the War.
Look's like Billy's has writting in it,.....Some folks are trying to take back the sig n from the Nazi idea...but i doubt if will happen..its now to engrained with Death.
The word swastika is derived from the Sanskrit word svastika (in Devanagari स्वस्तिक), meaning any lucky or auspicious object, and in particular a mark made on persons and things to denote good luck. The modern equivalent to the term would be a talisman
Saw the CULT around this time in 89 open for Aerosmith in Germany..Boblingen I think....Few months later I saw them as Headliners in Iowa. Those were the days!
Thats who the opening bands were!!! I couldnt recall. I liked Tora Tora. I bought their cassette couple days later of the album Suprise Attack. Good album,.,,but long out of print.
If you saw that show in Iowa, and I saw it in Illinois then we must have seen them within days of each other. I have great memories of it. Tora Tora got back together over a year ago. They played Rocklahoma 2008. Look for it on Youtube. They've played several shows in Memphis over the last year. Many clips also on Youtube.
Cursed at billy a, he fuckin hated billy back then, and billy didnt like ian much either rock n roll egos thats all.,and ian spent at least 2 years with his voice fucked through touring.
Who cares, I saw the Cult with Aerosmith in Arnhem Holland in 1989 at the Sonic Temple tour . The show was fucking great! This performance is ok to me too.
ian was completelly in the stratosphere high as ........he forgot his words and even cursed at billy. but they freakin rule. i saw them live in texas when they came with sonic temple. too bad i went with a cunt, yeah you prudence!
I hear what you guys are saying about his voice here, but there is something very raw about it that I like. It's pure rock and roll Cult style. Young pumped and fucked up the way it is and was. Love it!
Despite being my hero, I will agree that Ian is a little less than his usual fantastic performance in this. But Billy and Jamie are really rocking out in this! It's a shame Jamie left, he had great onstage persona
I don't know if I've seen one live video w. the Cult where Ian sings particularly good. He skips a lot of words, sounds really tired all the time... It's a shame, 'cause they made great live music.
Lol. Of course Billy meant his shirt to offend and its NOT some hippy symbolism! It's a California Choppers T shirt. This was during The Cult's 'biker/metal' period.I even remember seing Ian sat on a Harley on the front of an issue of the NME around that time. California Choppers are still in business today and is run by some SF Hells Angels. They build cool bikes.
I remember watching this at the time and thinking FANTASTIC! Such a raw performance. It was so good to see them on the telly - the complaints afterwards about the swearing and Billy's shirt just seemed to add to the whole thing. They also did a great version of Born To Be Wild. So great to see this again!
Awesome band, awesome song. The Cult in their best phase in my opinion, I mean how fucking great do they look? How fucking great do they sound? Job done!
The album Sonic Temple is pure perfection, is Rock n´roll the way it should be, the way is supposed to sound. Sadly, they didnt follow up that concept
Seriously, to the people thinking Duffy's shirt is some offensive symbol. Its not. It's like when the one comedian parodied the Judas priest thing. The Cult must be tired of all the fans, bringing big bucks in, tired of all the drunk woman who want to screw them. So they have a plan to turn all their fans against them.
fuck off with your stupid superficiality.,,.fucking wussies "oooh bad bad swastikas black clothes and iron crosses" that's ROCK AND ROLL it's nothing about politics or evil ideologies.,,.it's just bad ass rocknroll
That's exactly right! It is over 3,000 year old symbol in India, East Asia, and even used in some Native American tribes! Hitler totally ripped it off and ruined it.
Anyway, The Cult is the best Rock Band of the 80s, hands down.
i think people are reading too much into billys t shirt,, im sure he didnt wear it to actually offend anyone. if you enjoy the song and the band as im sure most people do,, its not really a big issue..

Charles Manson has a swastika tattoo in the face. You can see it on the cover of his only single (Look at your game girl) which he did in prison (covered from Rose Tattoo:).
The European Union had to answer a lot of questions when the press showed photos of gardens and places which can be identified as swastika´s from air view; not only in Germany. Let´s face it: just an indian symbol for the sun with a strong auratic character. A cult, like Sun King (..the only song I like from these posers).
The swastika was a day symbol in eastern europe really. They use it because of the nationalistic appearance according to me, but the world view never counts, but always that, what the man do how. Sorry for my terrible english.
Great song, great band - actually remember watching this when it went out (scary!). Not sure what was going on with Duffy's swastika t-shirt, though?!
here they are in transition form their ac/dc hair band look to their grunge look.... the guitar players hair is the perfect mix of hair band and grunge. i wonder how much hair product he used there.... to get that look.
there was a period in the 80s when billy said Ian was dressing like a nazi and trashing hotels and he was all dressed like a nazi. They are my favorite band but i would not be surprised if they were closet nazis, lots of brits like nazis, look at prince harry...sure make exscuses...but thats a swastika!
The swastika is an extremely powerful symbol. The Nazis used it , but for centuries it had positive meanings.
Until the Nazis used this symbol, the swastika was used by many cultures throughout the past 3,000 years to represent life, sun, power, strength, and good luck.
The word "swastika" comes from the Sanskrit svastika - "su" meaning "good," "asti" meaning "to be," and "ka" as a suffix.
nazi symbolism?the swastika is the knot of solomon a very very yewish symbol.and the swastika is whirling around the holy cube of islam, widdershin.hehehe, think about it.
Disregard the swastika like symbol on Billy's shirt. It has nothing to with the group or their music. I see new watered down bands today that try to copy the Cult with their style..makes me want to puke..nobody rocks like the Cult.
Actually, if you come to parts of Asia you will see this symbol in a lot of places. Its not becauses its connected to facism but because it has connections to Buddhism
Thanks for setting me straight about which drug he was abusing. The fact still remains that Ian's voice has suffered, and THAT is a real tragedy. Nothing gold can stay.
You either don't know your Cult very well or you didn't take a second to think about it. How much is The Cult known for using Native American imagery. And where did that symbol originate. Indians NOT nazi douche bags!
First, I'm a huge fan of this band. I know Ian has always been, due to his own origins in part, using native imagery. But the swastika remains, and will do for decades to come, the symbol of an horrific historic period. Billy knows it, he's not dumb. To me, it's not someting to mess around with. You insult me if you wish so, but my opinion is legitimate and not based on stupidity. I'm still really happy they are in the studio, and I've seen them 6 times live.
Was just trying to get a rise out of you. I came here searching for Cult videos, and the first thing I noticed was that shirt, and I was trying to read it and see what the hell it said. Incidentally, I like this version of the Cult way better than the new Jim Morrison look.
I don't what it says, but to me, and I'm not jewish, even if this sign goes way back before the nazis, it's now forever associated with this horrific not so far war and the atrocities they did. That said, I love the Cult, can't wait for the new album and to see them for the seventh time. By the way the beard is gone on Ian's face! Saw him with The Doors and he was EXCELLENT! One of the best show I ever saw!
I am going to see Riders on the Storm this week. Obviously, Ian is gone, and they have replaced him with Brett Scallions of the band Fuel. I would really like to see Ian. As far as his shirt is concerned, to me it is just another rock star making a "statement". Honestly, though, i am no Nazi sympathizer, and was just jacking around in my message. However, Political Correctness is getting a little crazy these days. Don Imus first, then they go after Satellite radio Dj's. Scary censorship.
Sure, I agree. My point here is: I can say my opinion, and explain it. Freedom of speech. Plain and simple. The most scary thing IMO is the filtered news media in America. Musolinni said: "facism is the merge of the State and the corporations"... I guess the USA are not far from that.... and THAT'S scary.
I think you're right about the comment to Billy. I could hear it, but wasn't sure it was directed at Billy, but you listen enough times to it, and it does sound like he said FU-Billy.
Is it me or did he say "F-U Bill" at 1:55 when Billy Duffy said something and then if you look at Billy a couple seconds later, he looks like he is laughing! LOL
How fucking heavy is this...beautiful

It's sad to watch this vid. Ian's voice is so weak from the heroin he was doing at the time. What a shitty, uninspired rendition of a good song.

you obviously know nothing about Ian and what was going on around this time.
It was nothing to do with drugs,Ian was an alcoholic at the time and was drinking himself into oblivion following his father's death.

Thanks for setting me straight about which drug he was abusing. The fact still remains that Ian's voice has suffered, and THAT is a real tragedy. Nothing gold can stay.

Great song, Amazing band, AWFUL t-shirt Billy! Any reference to nazi ideology is a bad thing IMHO.

You either don't know your Cult very well or you didn't take a second to think about it. How much is The Cult known for using Native American imagery. And where did that symbol originate. Indians NOT nazi douche bags!
olensbro 4 years ago
First, I'm a huge fan of this band. I know Ian has always been, due to his own origins in part, using native imagery. But the swastika remains, and will do for decades to come, the symbol of an horrific historic period. Billy knows it, he's not dumb. To me, it's not someting to mess around with. You insult me if you wish so, but my opinion is legitimate and not based on stupidity. I'm still really happy they are in the studio, and I've seen them 6 times live.
poprip 4 years ago
I wear Swastikas every day for the meaning that most know it for, and could give a phuck about being P.C.
Live with it.

Was just trying to get a rise out of you. I came here searching for Cult videos, and the first thing I noticed was that shirt, and I was trying to read it and see what the hell it said. Incidentally, I like this version of the Cult way better than the new Jim Morrison look.
cshilliday 4 years ago

Scary censorship.
cshilliday 4 years ago
Sure, I agree. My point here is: I can say my opinion, and explain it. Freedom of speech. Plain and simple. The most scary thing IMO is the filtered news media in America. Musolinni said: "facism is the merge of the State and the corporations"... I guess the USA are not far from that.... and THAT'S scary.
poprip 4 years ago
I would agree. Scary.
Have a good weekend.

Wasn't trying to insult anyone's intelligence. Just saying that his associations with an image don't have to be yours.

I think you're right about the comment to Billy. I could hear it, but wasn't sure it was directed at Billy, but you listen enough times to it, and it does sound like he said FU-Billy.

It looks like Bill reaches over and smacks Ian's arse much to his annoyance before having a chuckle to himself at Ian's rection.

clearly he has a cold here

Is it me or did he say "F-U Bill" at 1:55 when Billy Duffy said something and then if you look at Billy a couple seconds later, he looks like he is laughing! LOL
