  • @violentjett watch it again you moron. Look at where Billy is right before Ian says it!! You are blind and deaf!!! What are you doing making comments on a band you obviously don't know anything about? Come back when you're an adult and your mommy will let you listen to a good rock band!!!

  • the reason Ian`s voice is rough here is because they had just flown in from NYC and ross did say this at the begining of the show....I watch it live at home, showing my age, the cult are class pure class....!

  • @peekster63 I couldn't agree with you more..I had the honor too see this band and it was an amazing show!

  • сила!

  • THE CULT GET NO CREDIT AT ALL!! bell bottoms in 85, and PLAID in 89!! IAN U ROCK

  • LOL! "Fuck you Billy"

    Wonder what Billy did!

  • @violentjett Sounds like "Fuck you Billy" & YOU need Anger Management BAD. Seek help FAST.

  • @violentjett Me ears are fine.

At least I don't have cum up me arse like you do.

  • @violentjett No way man you must have cum up your nose in your ears and down your throat!! He said "Fuck you Billy" Watch Billy after he says it!! fkn moron!!

  • @marksbeth LOL! They were always playing pranks on each other. Billy's right up next to Ian. I bet Billy did do something!

  • @WENCHY101 I think he goosed him

  • @marksbeth LMAO! I bet he did! Also, "I'm gonna take you to the promised land" This moron cum guzzler thinks It's "I'm gonna take you and fuck you baby" There is no "and" It's "to"

It's "I'm gonna take you to.....fuck you Billy"

  • Amazing.. even with laryngitis, even more dusky and raw. Very hot. Love this band.

  • HAHA..... PLAID BEFORE GRUNGE!! IAN WAS THERE FIRST, AS USUAL!

  • @MASSIVENV I was thinking the same thing :)

  • Matt Sorum fits in well..Heavy drummer

  • Definitely THE most underrated band of all time!!!!!!!! as well as Ian being the most underrated front man of all time also!

  • Great band, great song, awesome frontman, I just wish he'd discover gym, and stop smoking, so he has stamina to sing.

  • Ian sounds rather hoarse in this show.

  • @1971SuperLead They did an appearance on the Rockline radio show around this time (late Nov. '89) and Ian said he had a case of "acute laryngitis", so that likely explains the quality of his voice in this video.

  • The "SWASTIKA" is infact a sign of peace...hijacked by the Nazi's. Many religions used it before the War.

Look's like Billy's has writting in it,.....Some folks are trying to take back the sig n from the Nazi idea...but i doubt if will happen..its now to engrained with Death.

  • Absolute fkn Legends... I remember going ballistic in my living room to this 20 years ago.... got this on VHS somewhere. great post.

  • "The CULT" rOcKs ! ! !

  • Comment removed

  • ITS A SWASTIKA

  • whats with the swastika on billy's shirt?

  • Hell i saw em around 2000 at House of Blues in Nola and they were as good as ever. Course there probably my favorite band of all time.

  • Saw the CULT around this time in 89 open for Aerosmith in Germany..Boblingen I think....Few months later I saw them as Headliners in Iowa. Those were the days!

  • First time I saw them was in L.A. and this local band opened for them: G N R.

  • YEah I saw 'em around same time March 1990 headlining in Illinois with Tora Tora and Bonham. Killer show.

  • Thats who the opening bands were!!! I couldnt recall. I liked Tora Tora. I bought their cassette couple days later of the album Suprise Attack. Good album,.,,but long out of print.

  • If you saw that show in Iowa, and I saw it in Illinois then we must have seen them within days of each other. I have great memories of it. Tora Tora got back together over a year ago. They played Rocklahoma 2008. Look for it on Youtube. They've played several shows in Memphis over the last year. Many clips also on Youtube.

  • el baterista lo tiene que ayudar al vocalista con los coros estaba visiblemente fusilado ese dia IAN...

  • gonna tell u yr fortune baby? 2nd verse

  • One of the most underestimated bands ever, and thats tragic!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Peekster63 , I agree!!!!!

  • @peekster63 Not for the pop world...they are perhaps too authentic to be popular or "rated."

  • Cursed at billy a, he fuckin hated billy back then, and billy didnt like ian much either rock n roll egos thats all.,and ian spent at least 2 years with his voice fucked through touring.

  • PLAID! 1989!! Ian Was There First, like he always is!!

  • ian's voice changed so much. jamie always seems to have a smile on his face =)

  • Who cares, I saw the Cult with Aerosmith in Arnhem Holland in 1989 at the Sonic Temple tour . The show was fucking great! This performance is ok to me too.

  • who cares about what? i was just making an observation.

  • I believe I saw this same tour in Frankfurt. One of the best concerts of my youth!

  • Coloradoraider, I agree. One of the best concerts of my youth also (The sonic temple tour although I was 22 at the time...)

  • ian was completelly in the stratosphere high as ........he forgot his words and even cursed at billy. but they freakin rule. i saw them live in texas when they came with sonic temple. too bad i went with a cunt, yeah you prudence!

by the way is that matt sorum in the drums?

  • Yeah! I was 18 and 1989 was a terrible year for me, but this track and this album have great memories for me. Everything The Cult did was brilliant.

  • 1:08 Shirt logo_ Frisco choppers Best West -san francisco

1:54 "i'm gonna take you and fuck you baby..."

  • 1:54 "fuck you Billy!" hahaha!

  • Has Duffy got a swastika on his shirt? Bet they got mail on that one !!

  • this is all i listened to for like 3 years, i had this show on tape! :) Fuckin rule the cult do!!

  • sunglasses? He's sooooo fucked up!how much blow do you think Ian did before this show?

  • I'm a guitarist; anyone out there wanna jam. This kinda stuff?

  • right on!

  • gonna tell u y fortune baby?

  • Great performance!

(Shame Wossy ruined it all by being mean to Andrew Sachs 19 years later)

    Cult rock!

  • duz he curse before 2nd chorus o before solo?

  • luv the drums here

  • good vocals; consid; he smokes?

  • The first 2 seconds of this video sound like they are on an airplane thats about to crash!

  • I hear what you guys are saying about his voice here, but there is something very raw about it that I like. It's pure rock and roll Cult style. Young pumped and fucked up the way it is and was. Love it!

  • fantastico!!!

  • Despite being my hero, I will agree that Ian is a little less than his usual fantastic performance in this. But Billy and Jamie are really rocking out in this! It's a shame Jamie left, he had great onstage persona

  • Ian is a little off.. but Duffy is NOT.. rip on soul brothers

  • I don't know if I've seen one live video w. the Cult where Ian sings particularly good. He skips a lot of words, sounds really tired all the time... It's a shame, 'cause they made great live music.

  • Lol. Of course Billy meant his shirt to offend and its NOT some hippy symbolism! It's a California Choppers T shirt. This was during The Cult's 'biker/metal' period.I even remember seing Ian sat on a Harley on the front of an issue of the NME around that time. California Choppers are still in business today and is run by some SF Hells Angels. They build cool bikes.

  • I remember watching this at the time and thinking FANTASTIC! Such a raw performance. It was so good to see them on the telly - the complaints afterwards about the swearing and Billy's shirt just seemed to add to the whole thing. They also did a great version of Born To Be Wild. So great to see this again!

  • ian looks pretty tired here

    he's got mad flava still

    word up

  • I love Sonic Temple as an album but they are a crap live act.. Vocally this is horrible, it doesnt hold hardely any resemblance to the original!!!!

  • why the sleeves, ask Jeeves...

Gassin' ouf- if they hadn't over toured they'd have made better albums....

Well I hope he didnt shoot all that he made...

  • I can't believe Ian Astbury is wearing a Zodiac Mindwarp & The Love Reaction t-shirt!

  • My favorite song from that album. "Ceremony" was awesome, too. Got it all loaded on the iPod. Fave band of all time.

  • Awesome band, awesome song. The Cult in their best phase in my opinion, I mean how fucking great do they look? How fucking great do they sound? Job done!

  • MATT THE BEST!!

  • The album Sonic Temple is pure perfection, is Rock n´roll the way it should be, the way is supposed to sound. Sadly, they didnt follow up that concept

  • Ceremony is worth getting hold of if you liked Sonic Temple, don't believe the critics,Ceremony is a fine album..like Sonic Temple it has soul.

  • Its a bad ass T, where can I get one. They are the badest band in the land.

    googo

  • A kick ass band with a undeniable voice. Sun King rocks!!

  • remember watching this with my mum and dad when i was 16 they were a bit shocked

  • Was that Ian? Was he sick or drunk or what? Anyway the song is damn great.

  • according to the sonic temple booklet, he was going through a band phase of drinking an depression due to his dad suffering from cancer.

  • Pub Band?WTF.Except from Ian being a tad ill but otherwise delivering very powerfully, everyhting's perfect...

  • who cares about duffy's shirt?

the real horror here is that they sound like fucking pub band........

  • i want one of those shirts......

  • Sound like a pub band??? Are you on fucking drugs?? Nobhead.

  • Seriously, to the people thinking Duffy's shirt is some offensive symbol. Its not. It's like when the one comedian parodied the Judas priest thing. The Cult must be tired of all the fans, bringing big bucks in, tired of all the drunk woman who want to screw them. So they have a plan to turn all their fans against them.

Rock on people, This is a great song.

  • THE CULT totally rocks

fuck off with your stupid superficiality.,,.fucking wussies "oooh bad bad swastikas black clothes and iron crosses" that's ROCK AND ROLL it's nothing about politics or evil ideologies.,,.it's just bad ass rocknroll

and the cult are the best in it

  • Learn history folks,

the swastika symbol was around before a scummy politico like Hitler bastardized it.

We're all brothers and sisters under the sun.

And that's what the Cult are about.

  • That's exactly right! It is over 3,000 year old symbol in India, East Asia, and even used in some Native American tribes! Hitler totally ripped it off and ruined it.

Anyway, The Cult is the best Rock Band of the 80s, hands down.

  • i think people are reading too much into billys t shirt,, im sure he didnt wear it to actually offend anyone. if you enjoy the song and the band as im sure most people do,, its not really a big issue..

  • Your a blazing fucking idiot, hah, you took the time to write this crap, Loss for words here fuck face,

  • total balloon head..

  • they did this 13 days after i was born haha

  • The swastika was a day symbol in eastern europe really. They use it because of the nationalistic appearance according to me, but the world view never counts, but always that, what the man do how. Sorry for my terrible english.

  • well boys and girls, was not the swastika the symbol of the sun. Does "sun king", the title of the song, does it makes sense do not you think so ?

  • is still jamie stewart played on base? can anybody post a video of "sweet soul asylum", one of the best goth song i've heard

  • Jamie is in this video, yes. But he left the band after the Sonic Temple tour. He hasn't played with them since, unfortuately.

  • Great song, great band - actually remember watching this when it went out (scary!). Not sure what was going on with Duffy's swastika t-shirt, though?!

  • here they are in transition form their ac/dc hair band look to their grunge look.... the guitar players hair is the perfect mix of hair band and grunge. i wonder how much hair product he used there.... to get that look.

  • FUCKIN NASTY

doesn't matter if he lost his voice, the man is grimey! mad steeezzz

  • ian estaba arruinado en esa epoca

  • es verdad....Ian estaba en su época de scotch...

  • there was a period in the 80s when billy said Ian was dressing like a nazi and trashing hotels and he was all dressed like a nazi. They are my favorite band but i would not be surprised if they were closet nazis, lots of brits like nazis, look at prince harry...sure make exscuses...but thats a swastika!

  • The swastika is an extremely powerful symbol. The Nazis used it , but for centuries it had positive meanings.

Until the Nazis used this symbol, the swastika was used by many cultures throughout the past 3,000 years to represent life, sun, power, strength, and good luck.

The word "swastika" comes from the Sanskrit svastika - "su" meaning "good," "asti" meaning "to be," and "ka" as a suffix.

  • I agree, he is Jim Morrison reincarnated. But whats with all the nazi simbolism. Aren't they an English band?

  • nazi symbolism?the swastika is the knot of solomon a very very yewish symbol.and the swastika is whirling around the holy cube of islam, widdershin.hehehe, think about it.

  • Disregard the swastika like symbol on Billy's shirt. It has nothing to with the group or their music. I see new watered down bands today that try to copy the Cult with their style..makes me want to puke..nobody rocks like the Cult.

  • FUCKIN' LOVE THE CULT!

  • I still say Ian is Jim Morrison reincarnated.

  • Who cares about shirt! Billy looks awesome here! They are cool!

  • Ive seen these fuckers for 20 yrs. THE CULT is the fukn Shit!!!

  • Actually, if you come to parts of Asia you will see this symbol in a lot of places. Its not becauses its connected to facism but because it has connections to Buddhism

  • It's sad to watch this vid. Ian's voice is so weak from the heroin he was doing at the time. What a shitty, uninspired rendition of a good song.

  • quote

'It's sad to watch this vid. Ian's voice is so weak from the heroin he was doing at the time. What a shitty, uninspired rendition of a good song.'

you obviously know nothing about Ian and what was going on around this time.

It was nothing to do with drugs,Ian was an alcoholic at the time and was drinking himself into oblivion following his father's death.

  • Thanks for setting me straight about which drug he was abusing. The fact still remains that Ian's voice has suffered, and THAT is a real tragedy. Nothing gold can stay.

  • I don't see anybody fat in this video, check your glasses clown.

  • my friend's dad is good friends with Jamie Stuart (Bass)

Awesome song, really good and not depressing like all the shit that's around nowadays...

  • his name is Jamie Stewart, you dork

  • Sweet shirt Billy!!!! I want one!

  • Great song, Amazing band, AWFUL t-shirt Billy! Any reference to nazi ideology is a bad thing IMHO.

  • You either don't know your Cult very well or you didn't take a second to think about it. How much is The Cult known for using Native American imagery. And where did that symbol originate. Indians NOT nazi douche bags!

  • First, I'm a huge fan of this band. I know Ian has always been, due to his own origins in part, using native imagery. But the swastika remains, and will do for decades to come, the symbol of an horrific historic period. Billy knows it, he's not dumb. To me, it's not someting to mess around with. You insult me if you wish so, but my opinion is legitimate and not based on stupidity. I'm still really happy they are in the studio, and I've seen them 6 times live.

  • I wear Swastikas every day for the meaning that most know it for, and could give a phuck about being P.C.

    Live with it.

  • I have no problem living in a world full of stupid fucks like you.

  • Tell me that when you see me.

  • Sure. My fist will spell it your you. Tough boy.

  • LOL.

  • ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha fun fun fun.

  • Was just trying to get a rise out of you. I came here searching for Cult videos, and the first thing I noticed was that shirt, and I was trying to read it and see what the hell it said. Incidentally, I like this version of the Cult way better than the new Jim Morrison look.

  • I don't what it says, but to me, and I'm not jewish, even if this sign goes way back before the nazis, it's now forever associated with this horrific not so far war and the atrocities they did. That said, I love the Cult, can't wait for the new album and to see them for the seventh time. By the way the beard is gone on Ian's face! Saw him with The Doors and he was EXCELLENT! One of the best show I ever saw!

  • I am going to see Riders on the Storm this week. Obviously, Ian is gone, and they have replaced him with Brett Scallions of the band Fuel. I would really like to see Ian. As far as his shirt is concerned, to me it is just another rock star making a "statement". Honestly, though, i am no Nazi sympathizer, and was just jacking around in my message. However, Political Correctness is getting a little crazy these days. Don Imus first, then they go after Satellite radio Dj's. Scary censorship.

  • Sure, I agree. My point here is: I can say my opinion, and explain it. Freedom of speech. Plain and simple. The most scary thing IMO is the filtered news media in America. Musolinni said: "facism is the merge of the State and the corporations"... I guess the USA are not far from that.... and THAT'S scary.

  • I would agree. Scary.

    Have a good weekend.

  • Wasn't trying to insult anyone's intelligence. Just saying that his associations with an image don't have to be yours.

  • Wow, Astbury is fat as hell in this vid.

  • EXCUSE ME,show me fat he is anything but fat.Because hes so fine looking all the time.Your just jealous.

  • I agree, how could anyone that fine be fat?

  • he definiately has a cold here, that's maybe the reason for why he's wearing so many shirts

  • I think you're right about the comment to Billy. I could hear it, but wasn't sure it was directed at Billy, but you listen enough times to it, and it does sound like he said FU-Billy.

    googo

  • It looks like Bill reaches over and smacks Ian's arse much to his annoyance before having a chuckle to himself at Ian's rection.

  • clearly he has a cold here

  • Is it me or did he say "F-U Bill" at 1:55 when Billy Duffy said something and then if you look at Billy a couple seconds later, he looks like he is laughing! LOL

  • ehh yeah - awesome!

  • Message to matt sorum = Never EVER wear ur hair like that, And join the cult again

Great Drummer and a great band

  • what happened to iains voice here

  • matt sorum = excellent

  • MATT SORUM(cult, guns n'roses...) one of the best drummers in the world

  • One of my favorite Cult songs.
