Why oh why don't the protagonists in these movies, pretend to go along with the villians then escape by doing so, instead of protesting and then getting done in by the bad guys

OMG just been reading about Joan Fontaine who's thesister of Olivia de Havilland ad their life long fued. They're both approaching their 100th Birthdays and still not speaking, So sad.
