@lovescarguitar im not finding anything specific on youtube right now but /watch?v=AWRNvbp6aPM as a bassplayer myself ive seen this get used in funkbasslines alot
I think Greg Howe is a Asian born in america because he looks like a Filipino and his signature guitar named 'LAGUNA' which is a popular place in the philippines where the national hero of it born.
@crisDAwog not the root note, but the name of the tonal center. for example, in the key of a minor, a is the tonic. which is different from if youre in that key and youre on an f major chord. then F is the root, but its not the tonic. tonic refers to a key, root refers to a chord. ;)
maybe Richie Kotzen is most complete than Howe. I like Greg Howe and Richie Kotzen but Richie kotzen for me is more clean and he plays whit string .011 it's incredible
Why don't all you hating comment making guitar star wannabees stop comparing great guitarists. No one is impressed over your know-it-all but can't do a thing attitudes. Great guitarist show how it's done, not debate over it. No one on this post have posted anything better than this presentation or proved that their OPINIONS will make them a great guitarist or at least someone who will be able to sell their music and philosophy to hundreds no less millions of adoring fans like Greg here has done.
I think most people will agree that there is just a misconception amongst guitarists about what legato really means. Many modern guitarists simply use the term to refer to any sort of slurred playing, its really just semantics however, and I'm sick of people coming in here acting like know it alls because greg isn't doing proper "classical" legato. He's just showing some cool slurred licks and an insight into his own style and how he plays fast lines.
sloppy sloppy sloppy! too repetitive. as is all his playing. thats just my opinion. his playing has never really evolved.and take the damn hair tie off the neck. so we can hear all your mistakes.
In most circles this is glaringly wrong legato... There are blank spaces in between some of his notes, so it's not even legato! More like just hammer ons and pull offs. plus, 95% of the notes weren't even close to the same velocity as the others. Allan Holdsworth, Allen Hinds, Marshall Harrison, Shawn Lane and Brett Garsed are all amazing.
@a1gold174 Well this video is titled "Punchy Legato" not "Completely Smooth Holdsworth Legato". Accenting notes in otherwise legato lines can give a cool rhythmic effect. Paul Gilbert does it all the time, and there's no "guitar law" that says you can't do it. People need to stop acting like Legato Snobs everytime someone doesn't play exactly like Holdsworth (even though he is amazing).
Well said. But I have a feeling that his accentuating is less than intentional. In example 2, 0:23 he accents the first two notes while playing it slow. But when he speeds up he loses the second accent.
Neither note is notated is an accent but.... they're considerably louder than the others. That constitutes poor LEGATO technique. That's what this video is. Not staccato. And no, I guess I didn't. What is it for?
@a1gold174 Combining staccato and legato. Is it any wonder that some of the notes are markedly accented and slightly staccato when that's the whole focus of the lesson?
I only read the article at the top now.. but none of the notes are accented. And the name of the video is "Punchy legato," not "Combining Legato and Staccato."
@a1gold174 Indeed, none of the notes are accented. If Greg wants to refer to a particular kind of combination of legato and staccato with the term "Punchy Legato" then he can. It certainly describes the sound adequately.
Also, this refusal to accept "hammers and pull offs" as a form of legato is ridiculous. Ask any classical guitarist - you can play legato picking every note!
@Steve128967 agreed shawn lane would say holdsworth was better than him because he respected him so highly but honestly i think shawn lanes technique was unmatchable holdsworth is just too damn smooth though he makes it look effortless
@brandon5pennies Well I would imagine either one of them would say the other is better since most of these virtuosos seem to be quite modest and humble... both of them have ridiculous technique and that smoooooth playing, but both of them are easily in the same ridiculous caliber where the variances in skill level are microscopic at best.
@Steve128967 easily...............Ive never seen anyone compare to those guys as far as lagato playing is concerned.................complete monsters
@panos1691 yeah, Guthrie is definitely one of the best guitarists on the planet, though my original comment was made back when Youtube didn't show you were replying to and I was stating who I thought were the best legato-ists haha.
