I can't be doing with all this new fangled stuff, all we want is a quality instrument at a premium which is achievable. Stringing, tuning and intonating is all part of what owning a guitar is about, just as much as playing the damn thing
What the hell happened to tuning by ear? this is nonsense. of course i doubt a beginner is going to shell out 5000 bucks for this. so experienced players will most likely have it but still. besides i suck when it comes to using technology. its really hard to use.
It's a good idea...but I think after 9 years of playing a normal guitar, I'd miss the good ol' Human VS Guitar fight when you get that string which never quite sounds in tune and you forever mess around tuning it up or down to get it perfect ;D
@noislegacy no its not, your obviously not a true guitar enthusiast as I am, this guitar is ROBOT its not a guitar, its just fucking electronics with an amazing shape that should remain a Les Paul, not a robot. its ridiculas
This guitar is somewhat good for students and people that want to learn how to play guitar in a way. It tunes up for itself, that can be handy for someone to know and remember the exact sound the string is supposed to make for each tuning mode.
I think this and all robot guitars are great, they just need to be less shown. I mean, Gibson needs to stop making only robot guitars for a time and anounce more regular guitars. But am fine with these type of guitars.
Sonny Landreth uses one of these on tour so that he doesn't have to take 6 or 7 guitars with different tunings with him. I bet his guitar tech loves it..
Let's be clear. This is in no way the world's first robotic guitar. It is the world's first commercially available guitar with robotic (servo) tuning. The LEMUR GuitarBot was completed in 2002, and others before us have created robotic guitars. See video at lemurbots (dot) org
of course the most amazing gibson guitars dont have this feature and of course, a player that could afford this technology might be able to tune by ear but imagine a concert situation with lots of songs in lots of different tunings. i think this would be the more elegant solution than bringing six guitars, changing and retuning after every song.
Destroy a beautiful instrument with that technology! Gibson is best without all that technologic stuff! Its sad that people can destroy a instrument like that!
Im totally agreed with Reachinghope! The old fashion way is the best way!
it doesn;t take into fact that you need to stretch a new set of strings once you've put them on.. or no matter if you tune up your guitar will go out of tune.. it all seems a bit gimmicky..on a cheap guitar for a new player I can see its great potential.. but for a serious player- the kind that could afford this kind of thing.. it just seems pointless. like they have hit the wrong end of the market. are gibson trying to clutch at technology in the wrong way?
I personally do generally prefer gibson to fender yes, but how the fuck can you say Fender sucks ass, the self tuning part just btw really isn't gibson, yes gibson agreed to incorperate this into their model but they didn't invent it. Fender is a sweet brand and they make sweet guitars, yes i like the lp better then the strat but there is some stuff that's better on a strat. Gibson is an Awesome brand and fender is too. My point, you sir., FAIL. and btw fender basses' are BETTER!
Looks like alot of work to put on a string, then if it breaks again for some off the wall reason? I would just rather have a normal guitar I think. It would be cool for recording I guess?
+VG provides extra modes(humbucking, telecaster, etc.) and for those who doesnt like technology, VG's toys can be bypassed and hence the guitar performs like a normal strat.....
Great stuff. Funny thing is that while they try to make it look cool with the audio samples (open tunning), the examples sound like shit..loll. Thought I could expect more from them. (even if the only critic is about audio examples...)
The only thing good that comes out of this guitar is you don't have to worry about going through each string and tuning it manually which takes some time every once awhile but thats about all it will be good for other then that not worth a ton of money and the finish is Spleh!
"eh this is great but, it kinda takes the essence outta bein a guitarist! i like the idea n all just will rock n roll lose its rock?"
Ummm I can tune a guitar but can't play it well so maybe just maybe the essence of rock and roll is actually playing the guitar and that tuning is a mechanical process devoid of any artistic creativity? I don't believe I have seen any albums with artists tuning their guitars but rather playing them. Eddie V tunes his guitar cd?
What happens if you forget to push the knob back in and then start playing? Will the guitar fight you? I'd like to see that... man vs machine. No contest really for fast metal soloers especially. those servo motors would not stand a chance.
what are you talking about? playing metal solos would do nothing to the servos. If playing metal doesn't ruin normal machine heads then it wouldn't ruin the motorized one. And anyways, playing metal, at least correctly, would put much less stress on the strings and tuners than hard strumming chords and such.
Technology is rad. Embrace it. I love Jimi Hendrix for how he played - not for how proficient a tuner he was (or wasn't)... I couldn't give a shit if he even knew how to tune a guitar! Long live "Gigantor"!!
To all you complainers saying that only tuning by ear is the only way to go, and that this new technology is worthless, then get your head out of your butt. I bet you drive a car that has heat and air instead of a coat and rolled down windows, and you have power windows instead of crank ones, power door locks instead of manual ones, and you have multidisc cd players instead of single cd players, power down convertible tops instead of manual ones....get the picture yet?
haha i actually have no air, manual windows, power nothing, single cd players...and do have to wear a coat in the car when its too cold....and i still think this takes the essence out of playing, learing about and being a true player. I mean if your ready to invest $2,000+ in a guitar lets all hope you know how to F***ing tune it!
Transperformance guitar existed way before this ... this is so not a "world premiere" ... and the transperformance works all the time so you're never out of tune. With this one it seems that once the guitar is in tune, you push back the button till the next tuning need. The only advantage of this one is that the motors are in the headstock instead of being in the bridge so you get a "wider" range of tones. Look for transperformance guitar to see what I mean. Jimmy Page has a transperformance.
Older musicians who tuned by ear probably felt this way when everyone started using electronic tuners. I hope this doesn't become that commonplace over the years, it really makes me sad. But there's probably a much bigger market for lazy and/or unskilled guitarists than for serious musicians. I don't see how Gibson will avoid getting a reputation as the incompetent guitarist's friend but hey, they know what they're doing money-wise
this has to be the worst idea ever. if you own a gibson you should be able to tune your own god damn guitar. watch, in forty years well have musicans that cant even tune their guitars and written music will be replaced with numbers and tabs
I have one of these and they are awesome, played rock and roll all night by kiss one song, pushed the button, and was playing honky tonk women by the stones in a min. or less!!....No guitar change, didn't even tought a tuner!!!!!
As for the price....a studio (which is what the guitar part is) cost 1300, the "robot" kit costs about 500. (without install) so for a limited edition model that is basically a Gibson Custom, how the heck can anyone claim this is over priced!?!??!
Here's my 2 cents. I've been playing for over 20 years. Of course I can tune by ear. I play over 200 shows a year doing covers, corporate events etc. I'm constantly changing tuning, drop d tuning, even open g tuning. I can do it fast and even without hearing get very very close. It's difficult at times with the DJ playing full blast or crowd noise. This looks like a godsend. Especially since I only play Les Pauls.
I would only buy it if it was a robot bridge and intonated itself. Thats the real guitar player's hassle. I already know how to tune. They should have just made a bridge that turned itself the right number of turns to be intonated.
Its a Gibson studio with a really ugly color and a gimic. If you want the same features and a fraction of the cost go with a Line6 Variax, then you get a banjo and loads of other sounds and tuning out of this world. Considering money you save buying a Line6 you can buy a amp and many 6 packs and have fun just flipping a switch and be in perfect tuning and the Line6 Guitar will also be perfect setup with all tunings; unlike the Gibson...
Amazing technology! To all those people saying you should be tuning by ear and so on, you should also be doing maths sums without a calculator, but no one bothers these days! It's called progress!
i wonder if there is a special neon button on the back that makes the guitar smash itself over the person's head who was silly enough to purchase such a lame thing.
all i can say is....if you are seriously thinking of buying this chintzy piece of computerized garbage....you should maybe just stick with the "guitar hero" video game and call it a day.
So you buy it, take it out of the box, pull the knob, give it a strum, watch the machine heads spin, squeal with delight, get bored, change the knob to an alternate tuning, strum, squeal and then what? The amazing, technologically advanced features of it seem to take about ten seconds to do there thing and after about an hour of watching that I'm sure it loses it's novelty. It is cool but it's still just a toy. P.S. Tuning by ear is good for you and it drives the chicks wild.
...I can tune by ear. Many people can tune by ear. Relative pitch can be learned, plus once you have it, it's so easy to transfer to other musical aspects.
Nonsense, you buy this guitar because you have more money than sense. So I'd imagine you're going to be getting a couple, Les.
And slump1, that's the sort of defeatist attitude that Gibson is hoping for to sell as many of these as possible. Anyone can tune by ear. It just takes practice.
There are no shortcuts to anything in this life. Learn to accept it. And learn to tune your guitar by yourself.
man this is so weird, it's cool, i just hope they don't make one where u just think the song, and the guitar plays it, then there's no fun it playing anymore!
Wow, that is really something, LOL, falls into the category of "what will they think of next?". With all the intricate electronics in there, I wonder how it handles hitting the road every week for onstage/live use? It will be interesting to read some user reviews once it has been out for a while. Cool idea kudos to the Gibson wizards!!!
No Matter how awesome this guitar is, or how smart it is, it will never replace The Regular Electric guitar

Why guitar players are afraid of technology I can't fugure out. Synth keyboard
players embrace technology like the new KRONOS just coming out.
I guess alot of the players in here bitching just play in standard tuning and maybe drop D.
Come on get with it. I guess you would still be using your floppy disk and not use
USB memory sticks too.

you should learn to tune by ear.
But I would still buy this guitar.
It's sweet.

Amazing technology! To all those people saying you should be tuning by ear and so on, you should also be doing maths sums without a calculator, but no one bothers these days! It's called progress!
Petro67 4 years ago
Still, I'd prefer the work of a serious mathemetician without a calculator, over the average high school graduate with one. Catch my drift? ;)

this guitar is the bomb!i wish i had it

nothing can beat the VG strat!
you can change tunings just by a turn of a knob...and master the controls in just 5 minutes.

nothing but the robot guitar...

i wonder if there is a special neon button on the back that makes the guitar smash itself over the person's head who was silly enough to purchase such a lame thing.
all i can say is....if you are seriously thinking of buying this chintzy piece of computerized garbage....you should maybe just stick with the "guitar hero" video game and call it a day.
i keed....i keed.

If anyone could tune by ear, they would.
slump1 4 years ago
...I can tune by ear. Many people can tune by ear. Relative pitch can be learned, plus once you have it, it's so easy to transfer to other musical aspects.
Sardone777 4 years ago
wow ur acting like people buy this guitar to watch it tune itself, you buy it to play it dumbfuck
LesBuckethead 4 years ago
Nonsense, you buy this guitar because you have more money than sense. So I'd imagine you're going to be getting a couple, Les.
And slump1, that's the sort of defeatist attitude that Gibson is hoping for to sell as many of these as possible. Anyone can tune by ear. It just takes practice.
There are no shortcuts to anything in this life. Learn to accept it. And learn to tune your guitar by yourself.

man this is so weird, it's cool, i just hope they don't make one where u just think the song, and the guitar plays it, then there's no fun it playing anymore!
flammablice 4 years ago
next step: the guitar that plays itself :P
Just wondering, is the system enough "intelligent" to detect open tunings?

my querty keyboard hates me, thou.

Can't wait for the guitar that just plays the songs and all you have to do is stand there saying "look at me I have a guitar, I must be talented"
