The first time I played Pokemon, I was playing Pokemon Yellow and I thought you randomly started out with a few Pokemon. I didn't know you could catch them, so when I fought Brock I lost, then trained my Pikachu to level 30, then beat him. I told my friend, who is response told me "You know you can catch Pokemon right?" The look on my face was priceless as I could have just caught Caterpie and raised it until it was a Butterfree.

This is a true story.

@oPuppet When I started catching Pokemon I intentionally stopped from withdrawing from the PC. Reason being, remember how long it would take to withdraw Pokemon from the old days? It took forever.

Must have stunk when you finally caught a Pokemon that you wanted, but never was able to get them. Your mom was awesome to help you, and good thing she got out of the house. I think out of all people my Dad and Brother taught me what buttons did what in games.

No, in the American versions Red is Ash and Blue is Gary. Green is the girl in FR/LG and Yellow (manga only) is also a girl.

In Japan they started with Pokemon Red and Green. Satoshi (Ash) was Red and Shigeru (Blue) was Green. When it was remade they also created Blue, and that's why they got a girl in the manga. When the games came to the US we got Red and Blue, which is why we know Gary as Blue. When the remakes FireRed and LeafGreen were released in 2004 they choose Red and Green because of the original Japanese release and a new female character was introduced (probably Blue from the Japanese manga. Not sure)

Ash is physically based off of Red, so essentially it is Ash, but in any case, yes, Red is more hardcore, but Ash was designed to be naive and clueless, where in R/B/Y, Ash didn't exist yet and in G/S/C, he was ment to be experienced and the best trainer in the game. And apparantly, being all powerful robs you of the ability to speak.
