I love his films so much, this was the first I saw, one of those experiences where it wasn't until days later, still haunted by its imagery, I realized its beauty. The ending sequence might be some of the most powerful, purely visual storytelling out there.
i love it, but this film hurts somehow... everytime i watch a film by Tarkovsky it goes deep inside. After watching "Stalker" i was shock, i really didn't know what to feel, tothink, to believe, to expect from us as human beings. For "Sacrifice" i'm still speechless, that films takes my breath away and the name Alexander just stays in my head in the voice of Adelaide while the house is burning... All of them are just masterpieces of art.
@Buzzoro does your brain also boil with Eisenstein or Pudovkin? Long shots do not equal good directing... short shots can be genious too. Just saying.
@LefabuleuxdestindAP Dude, I've placed this comment here years ago. Was way more hot-headed back then. And ofcourse a great movie has few to do with long shots but it does have quite some effect on its watcher. And I'm fully aware today that not everything Hollywood touches turns into crap. Everything has its own charm.
@Buzzoro Totally agree. I'm at the university always hearing that Hollywood is like forbidden, so I tend to be sick of people thinking that everything that's not-Hollywood is great per se, like Godard or anyone else, they do something different and just because of that, they're genious. Like you said, everything has its own charm. (If only my teachers could understand that and let go!) I like a lot of Hollywood movies as well as some of the things I'm SUPPOSED to like :P (sorry for my english)

I kinda liked RUBLEV, especially the bell-casting episode. But have you seen STALKER? Deadly dull, though like most of Tarkovsky, it has legions of fans.
I love how in most of his films, :stalker, mirror, nostalghia, sacrifice; he always makes such a beautiful contrast of elements such as Fire, Water, Wind, Earth....

There is so much peace in this take, you can feel his effort, his impotence (3:33-3:52). Brilliant.

@Buzzoro Don't even compare cheap, moneymaking Hollywood with such profound art. Hollywood does not make films it just makes money.

@Buzzoro more like .5 second shots. No wonder everyone has ADHD. I think Dark Knight had an ASL of 1.5 seconds. God I hated that movie.

This movie keeps on threatening to become interesting, but then backs off. I think Tarkovsky had a natural allergy to interesting cinema.
