Pretty sure I'm in the military and I know shit like this isn't branded as standard operation procedure. There's shit that the training and higher ups don't prepare you for and in a situation like this it's up to the discretion of the individual to ID them as insurgents. Its just some stupid movie called "Firebase Gloria". Having family in Vietnam and married to a Vietnamese woman the one thing that makes me puke is these movies. Live with and meet the real people of Vietnam and you will always be cheering for them in these movies and giving the Americans the thumbs down. Vietnam might be poor but it has more dignity, real women and culture than America.

When you have uneducated people on both sides in war time and you give them weapons and some instructions you always get abuses being committed. Regardless its North vs South and most combatants were technically Vietnamese even allowing for the US/Chinese/Russkie backers. Both sides have their own fanatics. The biggest problem with US was they propped up a Catholic loser for President. A Buddhist govt would have rallied the people to the Souths cause a lot better. Diem and co were useless.
