why do I have to wash 100 M. from a river?

Think of the ground as a natural filter. Contaminated water will return clean through ground into waterstreams as oppose to pooring dirty water straight back into the stream.

You're right, 10,000mm is 10m and it's the hydrostatic head of the material

I found these are also handy when you get to a campsite that do have a camp kitchen and the sink there is filthy.
