@adebicki: Out of her league? Belinda Carlisle saw more commerical success as a solo artist and with the Go-Go's than the SMithereens ever saw. Smithereens are still one of my fav alterno rock bands, and this song was an awesome combo of contrasting voices. It was worthy of airplay but never got any...
Vocally, they were, most definitely, in league with one another. They both seemed to be very ... considerate...both seemed to be careful not to try to outshine the other, vocally. As a result---even though the combination was pleasant---it was not as dynamic as it COULD have been.
Amazing! I recorded this when it was on TV in 1990, just by chance. Loved it. Lost the tape when my house was burgled in 1991, so wonderful to see it again, thought it was lost forever!
Great, great clip!!! How about Mike Mesaros playing the harpsichord lead?? He is one of the best unsung bassists around. What ever happened with him? I cannot seem to find any info on why he left the Smithereens.
@djpga711 If you ever find out, I'd like to know! Mike was an early bass influence on me, but I found out on Monday after having a brief chat with Pat at a CD signing that *he* was the one who wrote the awesome bass part in "Blood and Roses." All this time I thought that was Mike's part! i still think Mike's great, though.
Pat wrote this song for Belinda, but she did not want to put it on her album. The Smithereens recorded it and Belinda laid down the back up track. A classic song and a great example of Pat Dinizio's song writing skills.
Fantastic.

That's wasn't bad, I disagree about Belinda being out of her league, Sometimes combinations of two different voices makes good music.
Never seen or heard this wish it would have come out bk in the day. I'm sure iTunes doesn't have it; thanks for posting it.
