  • Thanks for uploading !

  • Being a Shergar fan, just curious: Anyone heard of a horse going for the lead in the derby at tatt corner and keeping it? Just over 2f left and he's 5-6l clear? Easiest ride Walter ever had, get up, hold on, enjoy the ride!

  • I was at Ian Baldings yard that year working as a stable lad and the Jockey on the second Glint of Gold (John Matthias) was famously quoted afterwards thinking he had won the race...........so far clear was Shergar

  • At 2:04 he just took off into huge speed!

  • What was his max speed at 2.10

    Answer 67.56km/hr on grass.........

  • @MIKE21071964 speed at 2.18 by any chance? Imo he's in full sprint/run-like-the-cops-are-chasing mode right there

  • What was his max speed at 2.10 ?

  • that is incredible!

  • Very bad commentary. No sense of anything special happening.

  • @irishcowboy42 secretariat won the triple crown all in record time 38 years later 2 of the times have still never been bettered, his performance in the belmont was simply the greatest display by any horse anywhere. therefore you do not know what you are talking about

  • I hope the ira men who did get raped violently every night

  • Amazing brings a massive smile to my face!

  • He is the Zenyatta or secretariat of turf racing I loved him solo much it's sad his tragic ending

  • Great memories of a true champion. Can remember the Ladbrokes at Mill Hill laying 2 cash ( probably bankers drafts) bets of 50k at evens on the morning of the race.

The second horse Glint of Gold was another favourite of mine.

  • @thewelly1973

    You were saying.....

  • haha 1 dislike in 109 grand. not bad

  • 0:19 is quite good..

  • sea the stars, shergar, are 2nd raters compared to the greatest racehorse who has ever lived SECRETARIAT is incomparable

  • @MyAnastasi You never haerd of Arkle.

  • @MyAnastasi You are taiking nonsense mate... 2 continents and 2 different levels of racing i.e turf/dirt etc. The 3 of them were great champions.

  • @MyAnastasi

Secretariat would have been burned if he had to race Shergar

  • frankel is overated. Will lose his next race.

  • Walter was waving the whip at the horse and smacked him a few times once he was clear of the field, so that he wouldn't start to idle or veer at the end of the race. I thought you were referring to the pat on his neck right before he crossed the line when you said "smack". Sorry.

  • Shergar was the best there's ever been, no horse could have beaten him over this trip from any era.

  • its hard to imagine any horse even those with a turn of foot living with shergar that day

  • okay, the ira fed him carrots and polos till he died peacefully aged 34

  • Comment removed

  • The Sunday Telegraph: "Shergar was machine gunned to death. There was blood everywhere and the horse even slipped on his own blood. There was lots of cussin' and swearin' because the horse wouldn't die. It was a very bloody death." Shergar slowly bled to death.

  • If it was in the Sunday Telegraph, it must be true (!)

  • i love horses for the generous and wonderful creatures that they are and the demise of Shergar breaks my heart. Wishful thinking that he was turned away to grass as an anonymous horse somewhere.

  • I sincerely hope that the bastards who stole and subsequently killed this lovely horse rot in Hell. Shergar had the sweetest temperament and was so easy to handle. IRA scum!!!!

  • Why did his jockey give him the whip close to the finish, only to shut him down shortly afterwards?! He was already well clear of the pack at around 2:38 in this video, when you clearly see the jockey smack him a few times. What kind of riding is that?

  • @rcschumann He was idling because there were no horses with him, Kinda like Frankel in his Guineas demolition job. Shergar was beginning to slow down because he thought He'd already won. He eased him down with a couple of 100 yards to go. Magnificent specimin was Shergar and he certainly didnt deserve the end he recieved. I hope the bastards who did that to him are paying the price dearly. RIP Shergar, A memorable victory for a memorable horse...

  • @ASupremeOwl I see...kind of like Secretariat at the Belmont, but he kept accelerating through the wire. He sometimes liked to keep going after the finish, setting two track times or records in a race - for instance, at the Marlboro Cup, he set the world record for 1 1/8 miles, and then, with his jockey trying to shut him down, galloped out another 1/8 to set an unofficial 1 1/4 of 1:57 4/5 (!), later matched by Spectacular Bid. Shergar was great, but to me Nijinsky was the best on turf.

  • @rcschumann Nijinsky was a superstar. He kinda gets overlooked for someone who won a Triple Crown, Irish Derby, King George. He had it all, I do think as a 3 year old it wasn't the strongest field of horses he could have beat but Im confident in saying he would have give some of the horses rated above him by timeform more than a run for there money. Dancing Brave is the best I have ever seen though...

  • @ASupremeOwl Dancing Brave was phenomenal too. Both Nijinsky and Dancing Brave owe their superior genes to the great Kentucky Derby champion, Northern Dancer, who was their sire and grandsire respectively. A mighty horse that Canadian bred, and he passed his qualities on to his progeny. Regarding the Epsom Derby, why wasn't Frankel entered? He's supposed to be the best 3 yr old at the moment, and had more than enough time to recover from the Guineas. cont.

  • @ASupremeOwl The Derby would have had a better chance of staying in the UK if he ran. What an arrogant jockey on Pour Moi, standing up before his horse even crosses the line!

  • @rcschumann They had doubts about Frankel getting the trip. Hes an out and out miler but I think every 3 year old should be aimed for the Triple Crown its lost its worth I feel now. I think Mikael Barzalona in the Derby yesterday just showed a little bit of immaturity at the end. Hes a very talented jockey though I'll give him that...

  • @ASupremeOwl But the way Frankel finished at the Guineas tells me he would have handled the extra 1/4 mile distance. Also, for a horse to be considered great he should win over larger distances - a case in point is Sea the Stars, who ran in both Guineas and Derby. Secretariat was considered more a speed horse after he won the one mile Gotham and other shorter races, but did even better at middle distance. We'll see what Frankel does at Ascot. He should be headed to the Arc, shouldn't he?

  • @rcschumann Frankel will win the St James Palace stakes with ease. There isn't a single 3 year old colt about who can cope with him over a mile, His Guineas performance tells us that. I think we'll see different tactics at Ascot though. Frankel won't be aimed at the Arc, He'll probably be meeting Canford Cliffs at Goodwood in the Sussex Stakes after Ascot. If he wins there I fully expect them to have a crack at the Mile Turf at Churchill and hopefully meet Goldikova. Very interesting...

  • @ASupremeOwl But the Epsom Derby is a much more prestigious race, one of the best in the world, and some of the finest 3 yr olds of Europe have already run in it - which means that Frankel will be racing against left overs at the St. James. It seems to me that Frankel's connections are more interested in keeping his winning record intact, than racing him in the biggest events and against the best opposition. Again, a horse has to win at 1 1/4 or more to be considered great - STS, Nijisnky etc..

  • @rcschumann I wouldn't say so. Brigadier Gerard raced the majority of his races over a mile apart from his King George win and I would consider Him one of the greatest. If Henry Cecil is convinced a mile/mile quarter is Frankel's maximum then I can understand them swerving the Derby. My personal opinion is Frankel probably had it in his locker to see out the trip. If Frankel remains unbeaten and takes on the likes of Goldikova and Canford along the way then he is as special as we all think he is

  • @rcschumann Walter was giving him a pat on the neck...not using the whip. Open your eyes before making a comment.

  • @BigGreyEyes1 No, he gave him a few whips and THEN he gave him a pat on the neck. YOU open your eyes.

  • 1981 was an incredible year for sport so many superstars :}

  • I used to work with this Irish guy who went very quiet every time the name 'Shergar' was mentioned- not sure whether it was guilt or not...

  • I always get chills in my spine when I see him getting away from the rest of the horses. Truly remarkable.

  • tupac's riding in the national in the sky the boss up there's the bookie

  • get to bookies and get yo house on shergar it just might win

  • the usain bolt of horse racing,

  • @turkyish That's what i've been telling the yanks on the sea the stars--complete superstar video. Shergars races were not tight affairs, he annilated the field. These so called great horses all ran tight races. He truly was the usain bolt of horse racing.

  • i love that volvo flying around the corner..

  • What a fantastic horse. Best I've seen. So sad what happened to him. Hope thy find his remains someday. love watching this video

  • DID SHERGAR AND RED RUM EVER RACE IN THE SAME RACE

  • @DAJAZDJ1 lol, that made me laugh

  • @DAJAZDJ1 ur an idiot

  • @DAJAZDJ1

Shergar and Red Rum didn't race together. Red Rum was a steeplechaser and Shergar a sprinter so neither could race against each other.

  • The greatest Derby performance in history....his turn of foot here is just absolutely staggering!...Swinburn simply asks him to quicken and he leaves the rest of the field trailing in his wake...That Epsom straight still has the scorch marks on it!

  • @nealtracy They talk about how good Sea Bird's derby win was... but at best it is only as good as Shergar's win. How easy was he traveling on the corner? He pulls to the lead in 2nd gear and just waves them goodbye.

  • my horse's granddad was 2nd in this :D amazing to watch.

  • @premuimbond yeah my grandad was 1st

  • Comment removed

  • I would't want to crab this performance, but Glint of Gold was given a very unambitious ride. He was actually closer to Shergar at the finish than he was at any other point in the race!

  • @tigerboy1966 He would never had caught Shergar even if Shergar had the rest of the field on his back...

  • He was owned by an Arab. So why did the IRA do that?

  • @shanklypaisleyrafa He wasn't though, that's the thing. He was owned by a syndicate, the IRA thought he was owned by the Aga Khan so they could get a good ransom for him. They got fuck all, good enough for the scumbags bringing a horse into politics. Shergar was way faster than a honda civic!

  • @dubcindub15 Sorry sir But shergar was owned by AGA KHAN google it

  • @NaveedAly110 When Shergar returned to Ireland to go to stud he was syndicated for 10 million sterling, 40 shares at 250,000 each. The Aga Khan kept 6 of the shares for himself, the other 34 were sold to others. Google it.

  • Wow. Too bad we will NEVER know the truth about what happened to him. RIP Shergar

  • What happened to him was one of the sickest acts ever committed.

How can you do that to such a beautiful animal? they could have let him go free and fled the scene, at least he would not have got hurt.

    Fucking disgusting scumbags.

  • I love that horse so much. He is a fantastic turf horse, one of the best for sure. It makes me cry when I think about what happened to him. :(

  • i think someone is in denial and its guns not gones lol

  • i think someone is in denial

  • my grandad followed racing since the nineteen thirties and he said shergar and dancing brave were the best he had seen

  • Its a funny old game gambling on the horse racing, you win one day and lose the next, this is why I only back a horse every other day.

  • Fantastic horse and race. One of the best horse.

How cruel idiots ruined by injury.

  • The i.r.a are just a bunch of dirty slime bags. That they may all rot in hell.

  • THE I.R.A ARE JUST A BUNCH SLIME DIRT BAGS

  • It was a sad state of affairs for one of the best horses of all time !!

  • i wish we could remember shergar for his racing brilliance alone, the ira arent worth the time it takes to mention them

  • @littlebay75 ...i think that you'll find it was a gang of crooks not the PIRA... just cos they had gones does not automatically make them PIRA...!!!

  • I was 5 months old when he won this, I doubt I'll see a horse going for home over 2 furlongs out in the Derby in my lifetime again. I probably liked the pretty colours on the tv at the time though :)

  • 'Appparently' he was brutally killed with a machine gun, slipping over on his own blood, and 'just wouldn't die' and took a long time to bleed to death. This is according to a former IRA man's story in a report. I just hope that this isn't true. His body was never found and so nothing is FACT at this point in time. Either way, a WONDERFUL horse!

  • @kellyfortune they should shoot all bastards who would do that to a horse or any animal. We are too forgiving of evil people.

  • An outstanding horse

  • Amazing

  • I hope the scumbags who kidnapped and murdered this magical horse have died a painful and excrutiating death just like they endured on Shergar! Long live this true champion's legacy. A wonderful wonderful horse!

RIP Shergar the greatest of the greatest

  • @ASupremeOwl Calling them scumbags is an insult to scumbags. What pathetic wastes of oxygen.

  • He won Epsom in 1981, was number 18 and was shot dead 18 months later. I still remember being 5 years old and asking my mother when was Shergar coming home?

  • wow... my horses damsire came 2nd to him in this (glint of gold!) no wonder he can move.

  • why dont we all just enjoy the memory of this beautiful racehorse, the scum that killed him and worth our time folks

  • I was at Epsom that day and I don't think I have seen such an effortless performance from a horse on the flat either before or since. A great horse and a great day boosted by the fact that I'd taken the 20/1 on offer for the Derby on the morning of Shergar's winning of the Sandown Classic Trial in the April of that year!

  • The most dominant horse ever

  • what a magnificent horse shergar was, any horse past or present would have a job to live with him in his prime, sea the stars was a true legend but wether he could have beaten shergar, im not so sure, timeform rate them both equaly on 140

  • Poor Graham Goode! His commentary was void of the excitement which Peter Bromley had in his reading of the race for BBC radio (TV coverage in the UK was limited to ITV)

What made Peter Bromley's commentary memorable were his shouts of "YOU NEED A TELESCOPE TO SEE THE REST!" and "SHERGAR IS GALLOPING THEM INTO THE GROUND!"

  • What a horse!

  • Shergar was a wonderful horse, I've seen many great horses in my time: Brig Gerard, Mill Reef, Troy, Nijinksy, See the Stars but in 1981 none of them would have lived with Shergar. There is a better video of this race with Michael O Hehirs commentary The further he goes, the further he is going to win by. He has took the ground and swallowed them. This is greatness, this is brilliant, this is a wonderful horse!

For some reason i cannot locate it on the internet, sad one

  • Such an absolute tragedy what the IRA did to this colt, cutting his life drastically short. Such talent, and such a waste. IMO.

  • @GBeret83 Where's your Evidence the IRA kidnapped this horse??

  • @TopperRocker

    I'm not GBeret83 but here's a tidbit for you....

Sean O'Callaghan, an IRA double killer turned police double agent, used his book, The Informer, to name seven former Provos he claimed had planned and carried out the horse's kidnap.

  • @njpavid22 Sean O'Callaghan Schizophrenia sufferer FACT Claimed to be head of IRA southern Command(ROI) but didn't know about the biggest logistic operation the IRA ever took in ROI in shipping 100 tons of weapons from Libya haha....Go get a better source than Me,Myself and Sean O'Callaghan..You do know Sean O'Callaghan admitted to a murder he didn't commit haha News Sources know he's crazy and so do i...Nobody like Informers they tell lie's.

    Bye Bye.

  • @TopperRocker You must be the only fool in the world that believes they (Provos) didnt kidnap Shergar, There silence of denial, says all you need to know, and dont forget the fact there was a negotiating team speaking to the provos in secret on behalf of the Insurers and owner, as confirmed by Channel 4 racing 'Tommo' who was part of that team back then in 1982 - that is a fact.

  • @forza fc I'm not saying the IRA didn't do it fool. Im just wiping people clean when they quote the Schizophrenia,Gay Bondage loving so-called tout O'Callaghan...Blame lies with the Multi-Billionaire owners of Shergar so fuck the horse and fuck Aga Khan IV(Fake ass royalty)

  • @TopperRocker the aga khan may have a royal lifestyle but he is actually someone like a pope

  • @tube4625 fuck the pope...Oh' i see you looked at my page profile and saw all the Irish shit and you assumed i was a catholic haha

  • Not as good as Troy's Epsom performance, Troy beat a far stronger field.

  • I'm not a Horse Racing fan, but what a horse Shergar was.......very, very special.

    RIP

  • I guess it would be a good idea that if Shergar's remains are found one day, we can bury them near the winning post of Epsom Downs Racecourse, just like Red Rum at Aintree.

  • "Tragically, just 18 months later, Shergar fell victim to gunmen in Ireland."

One more thing. I think Shergar has probably been dead now since it has been over 30 years since he was foaled and thoroughbred horses usually can live for 30 years. Anyway, I still hope Shergar can have a better ending then being shot by those brutal gunmen!

  • wasnt he kidnapped?? :(

    poor guy :,(

  • i have a movie about him but... he was a steeple chaser haha :p

but its sad how almost all gud racehorses get murded :[

  • sea the stars is a better horse

  • Comment removed

  • I seem to remember someone being asked at what point did they think Shergar would win the Derby. Apparently the reply was, ' After he had won the Sandown Classic Trial'.

  • The field is already completely strung out approaching Tattenham Corner, which kind of indicates how weak a field it was.

  • Totally agree with you mate. One of the slowest times, something like 10secs slower than Troys time. But I do think he was an exceptionally good horse in a poor year and he could only beat what was put in front of him after all.

  • Totally OT in a way, but did they really have a car racing away behind the horses on the track itself?

  • What a beauty what a superstar horse he was!

This is the Derby you are not supposed to win by that kind of margin. He made other good horses look like complete chumps

fucking gutless cunts whoever you gunmen are rot in hell!!!!!!!! What did he do to you?

Perhaps the thick bastards put a heavy wager on the second place horse & instead of saluting the winner decided to retaliate. Who knows? The facts are they are chicken shit lowlife cunts & always will be.

  • I think you've got it just about spot on,gre812u.

  • waht a horse wouldnt even say he had to hit him to win irish are good at a few things and horses are

  • I vaguely remember hearing about a guy called Peter Bromley who commentated on this race for BBC radio and he came out with something like "Shergar wins the Derby-you need a telescope to see the rest"

  • What a great horse. He could have been anything. I think it was a rain affected track that year, and he handled it well.

His theft and destruction was one of the most dispicable acts of bastardry ever committed in racing.

  • Totally agree svend, cowardly fucking scum!

  • I like your word "bastardry" ! i agree totally though.

without entering the political side of things! i will say that the people who committed this crime were complete thick, moronic arseholes and i hope they rot in hell! Shergar was a horse with a lovely temperament and would have been an amazing stallion.

His loss is still felt today! The thick bastards that took him should be man enough to come forward now and disclose his whereabouts, but they weren't MEN to start with were they!

  • shergar was a fantastic horse , but i have never seen a better one than sea the stars, and they, along with nijinsky, dancing brave, seabird etc, etc, prove that you dont have to stay in training to be regarded a legend..!!

  • RIP gorgeous boy where ever you are.

What a champion. Didnt even need to be ridden home to win that one :)

  • here's a question, shergar or sea the stars ? true class or no competition ?

  • he was eased up and patted on the neck and still won by a record ten lengths......

  • Cant remember a Derby field so strung out turning into the straight . Looked like a Chelt Festival race !

  • this is about a horse loved by everyone , this is the twenty first century we all have an axe to grind ,in the past , lets move on and enjoy these sublime animals together

  • absolutely unforgettable

  • we are all agreed totally that the ira are scum but lets remember this wonderful horse for what he achieved on the racecourse and not waste any more time on them

  • yes the current IRA are scum, not the ones who fought british murders when irelands population went from 8.5million to 4.5million

  • uff uda uvf are also scum

  • yeah cause the north ended up the way it did cause the IRA ? suure kid

  • What the British murdered 4 million Irish?

  • well ur probably british so your history books wont refer to all the murders you committed around the world from america, india, australia pakistan and china etc. your history books will say it was a famine but a country that has so many resources like ireland does cannot have a famine.

  • @green1773

Recent academic research by IRISH historians uncovered the fact that British landlords in Ireland during the famine in fact did help the starving and were not shipping the food out of the country. Try putting your predjudice aside and do some research.

  • you do some research you dumb fuck, where was all the fish, poultry, beef, wheat, grain, pork and i could keep going. all that food was taking out of ireland by the british in huge toones and they were left with nothing but one crap crop to live off. go look for records of the manifests of those ships, but you wont find them(destroyed by the british govt.)you mf's never own up to any shit ye do. one of the biggets tyrants in history

  • why are you arguing about this? jeez comment on the video about the horse instead of arguing about the british and the irish -_-

  • wibbley i understand, but when you have british people who never admit how bad their country's tyrany was in previous times,it is hard. after all, everyone expect germans to be ashamed about what they have done in . the british still have this aristocratic attitude

  • I'd just like to say that most English people, myself included, are thoroughly ashamed of many of their governments past (and present) actions - but would like to point out that some English people suffered as much at the hands of their aristocratic overlords as the Irish - (the poor never get a say in anything - its the nobilty that made the stupid decisions) - I think you have a wonderful and beautiful country and I truly hope to visit it someday - peace and goodwill.

  • how come britian never suffered a famine in the same period of time. were ye just eating one crop.and to say the british landlords helped, lmfao. the land was owned by those people before it was forcefully taken from them and you want irish people to thank them. what a typical ignorant ponce you are

  • UVF - Simply the best!!

  • lol, a bunch of drug dealers and racists. mf's dont know how to fight. dumb fucks killed each other.lmfao.

  • ur talking maybe about a few landlords who felt guilty about been giving the land that was forced from the rightful owners. since when are a few landlords the british government and you tell me i have to do research. do you even what predjudice is, how am i. these are facts, how many died, who caused it,what were the reasons.

  • Machine gunned to death in a remote barn in Ireland and bled to death in agony.

  • Spectacular. We all know the rest - although we don't know what really happened. He must be one of the best flat horses of all time, surely, and not just because so many people feel sorry for him.

  • even allowing for the opposition and going towin the derby that easily being slowed down is incredible sea bird is the only other to consider as the best derby winners both are legends

  • must say his performance in the king george against the older horse was possibly even more impressive..

  • That last straight is so tough at Epsom...

    And he just walks away...

I remember him from when i was a boy.

Yup even in the US and The Netherlands Shergar is famous. Great upload Vegas.

  • I love that horse! I cried when I found out how he died! Poor Shergar! I <3 u!!

  • @jennaluvshorses You cant possibly have heard that he died. he was kidnaped, the thieves were never found or the corpe. There is a theory that IRA kinaped the horse and then killed him. But was never said that he was truly dead.

  • @OShining Shergar was machined gunned to death, also the horse died in extreme pain and kept on slipping when getting killed.

  • @drofheim I thought he was stolen and they didn't know what happened to him?

  • @drofheim I think we get the point you clown..

  • What a wonderful horse. A 10 length win in the Derby. And pulling away at the end. going uphill too . The first horse I ever owned was a grandson of Shergar. Through his son Shergars Best.

  • Great view of that ladies knickers at the start.

  • Comment removed

  • Beautiful!

  • couldn't have put it better meself tassiered

  • rip shergar-burried somrwhere in the back arse of leitrim!

  • the golden age of racing

  • great horse with a sad history...

  • this horse is seriously the defenition of awsome!

  • who's crotch shot was that at the beginning after princess dianna? That was hot....lol

  • He was (allegedly) kidnapped at gunpoint by the IRA as part of their campaign to raise funds. The owners refused to pay, fearing it would spark a trend of kidnapping horses (being relatively easy targets compared to human), but by then he was apparently already dead anyway, as the kidnappers were ill equipped to cope with a feisty horse and allegedly shot him. A very sad and ultimately pointless waste of a supremely gifted horse.

  • well said

  • can someone please tell me the whole story of what happened to this horse...thank you.

  • Truly magnificent.

  • I was born in 1981 and it is a privilege to see the greatest flat horse ever.
