I'm not sure if this was near the end of David's run or not. I know that David left the show in the year 1989, and he did have sideburns during his later years on the show. So I might be wrong but, I think it was at somewhere when he had sideburns when he left the show.
David's final appearance is where Maria is giving birth to Gabi. A season later the cast lied saying that he's living with his grandma; when the store turns over to Mr. Handford. He Died on 1/9/90.

Yes, it was in the year 1990 that David passed away from stomach cancer. David sure was a great character on Sesame Street.

He's not lip-synching. Gedde Watanabe is Japanese-American. (He was born in Utah.)

Yes. Same guy. Notice that there isn't the slightest trace of an accent. The accent was just part of the role in the film.
