The accompanist is having so much trouble trying to figure out what Looche wants, and I don't blame him! It must have been difficult to play with Pavarotti.
Luciano, che cosa posso dire, dopo questa interpretazione, nulla, sono senza fiato, e con le lacrime agli occhi, BELLISSIMA, spero che dal cielo sarai contento di aver dato te stesso a noi. RIPOSA IN PACE.
Pavarotti é inigualável, tem uma voz extraordinária, enorme paixão e uma inteligência inultrapassável na interpretação...Apenas o entusiasmo o poderia atraiçoar.
@GAYTENOR You got that right and if I say that I preferit over Bjorling it's not because I don't like JB but it's because Pavoratti and Di Stefano both sing it with more emotion, even when I compliment JB and I have many times for his great instrument his fans are insulted as they are the most fanatic of all opera fans it seems. I am not really a big fan of Pavoratti but when he is great he is great and this is great! By the way I met him through a friend and thought he was really nice .
@SHICOFF1 The point to be made here is that Pavarotti UNDERSTOOD WHAT THE HELL HE WAS SINGING. He wasn't singing by rote but from a knowledge of the Italian language. Bjorling was not as farmiliar with the Italian language. Just yesterday I ;istened to R. Jobin sing Romeo to Munsel's Juliet and while his voice, while really outstanding, wasn't on Bjorling's level his love of the French language and his understanding of the text made his performance more meaningful as a musical experience.
At 43, Pavarotti was at his prime here, and John Wustman was the pertect accompanist. This s the best of Luciano's recordings of this gorgeous Tosti song.

The words and music flow so without effort out of his mouth. One thing I always liked about Pav . Just beautiful.was his diction--you could almost learn Italian from him
Simply extraordinary!!!!!!...never saw so "moved" Pavarotti while singing a recital aria!!!
Always comparisons are not for my taste; I respect others opinions, but we all must accept that this is one of most beautiful and best sang versions of Tosti's "Ideale". Thank you very much for sharing this wonderful video.BRAVOOO!!!!!!
Everyone is a critic. This was one of the greatest voices in the history of MANKIND. His spacing and diction are flawless. The quivering vibration at some of the phrases and at the end are purposefully done. People need to stop being so technical all the time and just enjoy the music. Pavarotti was famous for his sound and nothing else, but I guess the world will always be filled with people who always have something criticize rather than enjoying a simple pleasure such as listening to this.
This is so beautiful that it makes me feel like l am in heaven. My son is singing this at the moment but at the tender age of 20 as a long way to go before he ever sounds as good as the Great Pavarotti.
I saw and heard Pavarotti in the 70's. His voice was at its best and his dramatic expression superb. He sounded like clear crystal tingling, or a heavenly harp. I was mesmerized and will never forget that concert in Toronto, Canada! Viva Pavarotti!, who brought, and still brings joy and wonder to so many!
As a professional singer myself, I find this one of the most moving, powerful, and beautiful performances I've heard by anyone of anything in my life. This is one of the finest voices in history singing in his absolute prime. His innate musicality, the finesse coupled with matchless clarion power up to the top notes as only Pavarotti can deliver is sublime. It's rare when perfect vocal technique combines with a great voice singing from the soul. As close to perfection this side of heaven.
@tenorsforever: I absolutely agree with you. This is the greatest, most spiritually moving performance of Ideale I've ever heard. I adore Caruso's interpretation ((view my profile...), but this is the most devine performance I've ever heard.
@tenorsforever i couldnt agree more..this is as close to perfection as i have ever herad i uised to own this concerty but it was taken from me how wonderful it has been posted
@tenorsforever And there's also the fact that this passion and intimacy cannot and will not ever be duplicated by anyone...I too find this one of the most moving performances in existence. My heart is ripped out with the first cry of "Torna, caro Ideal..." and I feel the utter anguish in the high A...One can only hope and pray to connect with the art like this man did.
I can't stop watching this. This is art. This is passion. This is music flowing through a man, becoming a new spirit.
Mr. Houser apparently is not very used to listening to music that doesn't contain a stupid monotonous 4/4 drum beat - the musical revenge of the Africans for 200 years of slavery that all too many Europeans are greedily slobbering up.... Personally, I find that Pavarotti and his accompanist employ rather LESS rubato than would be authentic in this pre-Toscanini music. Have you heard Fernando De Lucia do this song?
The BEST "Ideale." Pavarotti's performance was a high point during his 1978 Milwaukee recital, the one time I heard him in person without a microphone. How beautifully he sang back then. The voice was gloriously warm and golden. Although not particularly large, it carried easily because of its brilliance---
Fantastico, straordinario ! Assolutamente meraviglioso ! Mi mancano le parole ! Grande Luciano ! Il suo ricordo perdurerà en il mio cuore per sempre ! Per sempre... Mi manca Pavarotti... Mi manca tanto...
I have no idea what you're talking about, and I don't think you do, either. If you want to "interpret" it as a song about God, that is your choice, but it is obviously not correct.
Music does not have divine origin- it was always created for man by man. I don't understand why you can't accept a beautiful romantic song as just that.
I don't know why you listed composers... Bach was the only one that wrote sacred music.
Don't waste your time with my opinions, they're just opinios, I see the human being as a spirit incarnated and great artists like mediums of God (the mind creater of all), making "sacred music" or any other kind.
Ideale has always been my favourite Tosti song. I think the best versions of this song are from Bjoerling. He makes with his beautiful voice this song coming from another world. I always thought and regretted that Pavarotti (my 2nd best tenor) had never sung, let alone, recorded this. To my big suprise I saw and heared here that he had! And it's even on CD. What a beautiful (extended) version he did. A typical Pav. version with lots of emotion; you see and feel he's singing to his beloved. BRAVO
The first time I heard this piece was in a recording by Alessandro Moreschi, the only castrato to make any records. The sound quality isn't very good, as would be expected for 1904. The performance was considerably less expressive than this video, but modified to deal with the acoustic recording's limitations.
Very nice. Be sure to check out Jussi Bjoerling's version too. I think Pavarotti had obviously listened to it, he's trying to soften his top a little. He can't do gentle like Jussi, he should have stuck with a bigger sound which he could have more smoothly. :)
Fake? This is the interpreting and singing of a composition at it's BEST. This is about as close as any music can get me to tears.
It's actually difficult for me an average person to comprehend such mastery sometimes. I wish I could sing "weak" piano notes like THAT. Give me a break. :P
Yes I don't think the emotion is fake at all. This is near-perfection. No one does Tosti like Pavarotti. Nevertheless I think he poured it on just a teensy tad too thick with the wavering in his voice (right around 3:30-3:50 and 4:56.) He didn't have to do that to convey the sadness. I have another live recording that I think is just right, maybe I'll post.. :)
I'm not exactly sure, to be honest, the year or place. Maybe you will know. It sounds like early 80's to me. The quality isn't as good as this but he conveys the emotion without the wavering, which I like. :)
A very beautiful rendition of Ideale by P. in his prime. Pavarotti's beautiful sound and his interpretation of these songs inspired me to start singing Tosti songs too. Ideale and Non 't amo piu are my favourite ones.
Wow-Better late then never. Now that you've discovered that you are an idiot, try to work on it. Let's hope it's an acquired defect instead of a genetic one.
Shaw-I do not know. Last time I saw him was back in 2004. He sung Tosca at the Met, which was his farewell performance. As always, he was superb, but people were also heavy-hearted at then end of the performance as it marked the end of excellent era. The opening gig of Nessun Dorma in Torino was indeed pre-recorded as he was ill.

Gaiy-Actually, I am intentionally using a very plain and direct language so that idiots like yourself could easily comprehend. You might want to concede to the fact that you have a limited intellect if you consider my rhetoric as "large", which is not per my choice.

Domingo is has built a career based on transposing. Instead of being a servant of opera, he made the opera serve him. Vocally, he was inferior by every sense of the measure. Pava timbre is typical Italian tenor. Those who do not like it are usually the ones who love an inferior hooted and throaty sound with fits their own culture and etnical disposition. The most striking feature of Pava his beautifully unique voice which is governed by the timbre. His superb technique harnessed that beauty.
Dios Santo... no es posible que esa voz ya no esté con nosotros... me niego a pensarlo.... Que hermosísima interpretación, divina, extraordinaria!!; Viva por siempre maestro!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Gaiy-I don't need to sing like Domingo to criticise him for I am a generous patron of opera. Try to make sense. I am completely against Domingo's debasement of opera through artistic prostitution and xenophobic overmarketing of inferior talents just because they happen to be his countrymen.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I agree. I've always considered Domingo inferior. Domingo, on his best days and in his dreams, could never achieve Pavarotti's level. There is only one Maestro - and he is in the video above.
Domingo is by no means excellent. Never has been, hever is, and never will be. He's good enough, and an excellent sales person. That is pretty much it. He was outclassed by Pava in the lyric repertoire, and ended up being a midget in the verismo repertoire in comparison to the likes Corelli, del Monaco, Tucker etc. In fact, MINGO decimated the beautiful Italian repertoire with his limited vocal artistry -always pushed, always hooted, always monochromatic and always strangled.
Firstly, if the pianist runs away, the tenor cannot follow after a certain point. What you describe is the ideal circumstance, which is possible to create in a recital. And yes, it is in principle true. Aberrations do happen and inherently deviates from what is expected. Then the tenors tries to conform. Before you opine, try distinguishing reality from what is ideal.
Remember that music trancends cold logic and taps straight into our core emotions, which is why technique is not the whole picture. It's a big part of the picture, but as much as I love Pavarotti, I will gladly listen to a singer with slightly lesser technique on occasion if I just like the sound of his voice better or the way he interprets a song.
You know you're allowed to disagree with someone without being insulting - holy cow. Inquisitive, you are in over your head. The soloist leads, the accompanist follows. I agree with Purcell here, Il Maestro is a bit capricious with his tempi in this song - by liberal Purcell meant excessive rubato. Pavarotti is not everyone's cup of tea - I think he's the greatest of our generation. Domingo is no Pavarotti but he is an excellent tenor.

Come back, my dear ideal, come back for an instant to smile at me again, and in your face a new dawn will shine out.
If this is about god, it has a definitely theo-philic ring...
jakethewoz 2 years ago 2
You can be right, certainly my opinion is just a question of interpretation.
but I think this ring to God (with major G) exists with the name of mediumship.
Since music has divine origin, where from we can imagine Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Verdi, Puccini took their fantastic creation?
I find "Ideale" a mystery song with a mystery melancholy and a mystery beauty.
heavy21metal 2 years ago
I have no idea what you're talking about, and I don't think you do, either. If you want to "interpret" it as a song about God, that is your choice, but it is obviously not correct.
Music does not have divine origin- it was always created for man by man. I don't understand why you can't accept a beautiful romantic song as just that.
I don't know why you listed composers... Bach was the only one that wrote sacred music.

Don't waste your time with my opinions, they're just opinios, I see the human being as a spirit incarnated and great artists like mediums of God (the mind creater of all), making "sacred music" or any other kind.
heavy21metal 2 years ago
heavy21metal, your view is beautiful. And you're correct - Mozart, Beethoven, Verdi all wrote sacred music.

I find "Ideale" a mystery song with a mystery melancholy and a mystery beauty. It's not from this world.

Pavarotti-- the master of perfection in vocal technique and artistry -at its best in this.

I followed you like a rainbow of peace
along the paths of heaven;
I followed you like a friendly torch
in the veil of darkness,
and I sensed you in the light, in the air,
in the perfume of flowers,
and the solitary room was full
of you and of your radiance.
heavy21metal 3 years ago
Absorbed by you, I dreamed a long time
of the sound of your voice,
and earth's every anxiety, every torment
I forgot in that dream.
Come back, dear ideal, for an instant
to smile at me again,
and in your face will shine for me
a new dawn

It doesn't get any better than this.

Very nice. Be sure to check out Jussi Bjoerling's version too. I think Pavarotti had obviously listened to it, he's trying to soften his top a little. He can't do gentle like Jussi, he should have stuck with a bigger sound which he could have more smoothly. :)

The Holy Ghost was around when this song and these lyrics were composed.
And indeed the lyrics seem that the singer is talking about a Spirit.

No way.
There's no limit for music.
I love many diferent styles.
Anyway, the holy Ghost was around when this song and these lyrics were composed.

Fake? This is the interpreting and singing of a composition at it's BEST. This is about as close as any music can get me to tears.
It's actually difficult for me an average person to comprehend such mastery sometimes. I wish I could sing "weak" piano notes like THAT. Give me a break. :P
ShawDAMAN 3 years ago
He is great! No doubt about that.
halpa8 3 years ago
What's fake is your persona which is incapable of perceiving what's pure and sublime. Now get lost you little fiddlestick!
TheInquisitive4Ever 3 years ago
Fake emotion? He is very in touch with the emotion, this is a melancholic piece, that comes through very clearly in his interpretation.
Mooorhe 3 years ago
Yes I don't think the emotion is fake at all. This is near-perfection. No one does Tosti like Pavarotti. Nevertheless I think he poured it on just a teensy tad too thick with the wavering in his voice (right around 3:30-3:50 and 4:56.) He didn't have to do that to convey the sadness. I have another live recording that I think is just right, maybe I'll post.. :)
ShawDAMAN 3 years ago
I agree, Tosti is perfect for his voice, and he phrases and sings in Italian so well.
I agree with you, a tiny bit overdone at those points, but damn near perfect.
He has done better piano notes than that, but these aren't bad at all.
What live recording is this?
Mooorhe 3 years ago
I'm about to post it, give me a second. :D
I'm not exactly sure, to be honest, the year or place. Maybe you will know. It sounds like early 80's to me. The quality isn't as good as this but he conveys the emotion without the wavering, which I like. :)

Might Puccini's music be considered corny because he was a "post Tosti" composer?
wadekirtley 3 years ago
A very beautiful rendition of Ideale by P. in his prime. Pavarotti's beautiful sound and his interpretation of these songs inspired me to start singing Tosti songs too. Ideale and Non 't amo piu are my favourite ones.
Giovannilinverno 3 years ago
Il est bien touchant notre Luciano mais c'est "IDEALE" de Tosti revue et corrigée par Pavarotti, et le bis du 2° couplet ne s'imposait pas du tout.

OK. Thanks for replying. I'll try to find out.

Gaiy-I don't need to sing like Domingo to criticise him for I am a generous patron of opera. Try to make sense. I am completely against Domingo's debasement of opera through artistic prostitution and xenophobic overmarketing of inferior talents just because they happen to be his countrymen.

I agree. I've always considered Domingo inferior. Domingo, on his best days and in his dreams, could never achieve Pavarotti's level. There is only one Maestro - and he is in the video above.
dee1153 3 years ago
This is astonishingly beautiful.
tehen162 3 years ago
Domingo is by no means excellent. Never has been, hever is, and never will be. He's good enough, and an excellent sales person. That is pretty much it. He was outclassed by Pava in the lyric repertoire, and ended up being a midget in the verismo repertoire in comparison to the likes Corelli, del Monaco, Tucker etc. In fact, MINGO decimated the beautiful Italian repertoire with his limited vocal artistry -always pushed, always hooted, always monochromatic and always strangled.
TheInquisitive4Ever 3 years ago
Firstly, if the pianist runs away, the tenor cannot follow after a certain point. What you describe is the ideal circumstance, which is possible to create in a recital. And yes, it is in principle true. Aberrations do happen and inherently deviates from what is expected. Then the tenors tries to conform. Before you opine, try distinguishing reality from what is ideal.
TheInquisitive4Ever 3 years ago
Remember that music trancends cold logic and taps straight into our core emotions, which is why technique is not the whole picture. It's a big part of the picture, but as much as I love Pavarotti, I will gladly listen to a singer with slightly lesser technique on occasion if I just like the sound of his voice better or the way he interprets a song.

¡Bravo!. Muy bien. Vean también el Ideale por Joaquín Pixán.
