As individual drummers I would say Nick is better than Lars (even though Lars kicked ass until Load) in terms of speed and power (especially of double bass) and the complexity of his beats. But I think Lars gives more powerful beats in songs. I dunno, I can just feel that it's Lars playing and he gives a certain energy to each Metallica song which is awesome in my opinion. No drummer could ever give that to Metallica like Lars (well except for Dave Lombardo lol but he's in a whole new level).

Well,all you people here don't know shit about drumming,the fact is,even though Nick's playing is more obvious,Lars beats him,he is a simple drummer,but has a lot of power and speed,however what makes him so good is the fact that he can stand back and let the others show off,while keeping a good groove.I think that the only drummer in Trash Metal(And one of the few in the whole metal world) that could crush Lars is Dave Lombardo.

They both fit their respective bands. Personally, I prefer Menza just because his playing was more fluid and he seemed to be more of a versatile player (check him out on some Marty Friedman solo work). Lars always sounded too choppy for my taste, although I still liked some of his stuff from the 80s. Menza's performance from Cryptic Writings was my favorite, though. He mixed in some chops with some great musical drumming. And his dad played saxophone for Buddy Rich!
