Can anyone explain the attraction in NASCAR?

Now I'm not trying to pick a fight, I'm genuinely interested.

As far as I can tell the main point in NASCAR is to travel around a roughly oval track as quickly as possible in cars that have minimal downforce.

Is there more to it? What sparks the passion about it? Is it something you either get or don't get?

I remember watching Wide World Of Sports on Channel 9 here in Australia when they showed a video of one driver who spun outon the last turn, hit the wall androlled back down and hit another car just hard enough to change its direction that it hit the pitlane wall end on at what looked like top speed. The car looked like it shattered like a light bulb! Have you seen this one? I have no idea if the driver survived. First impressions would say no, but I hope he did!

My father has passed away about 2 years now and I'm the only one in the house that watches the race. It's sad for me to watch alone but I have it in my blood.
