A good version surely, but Ella's off Clap Hands Here Comes Charley destroys any version by O'Day I've heard. Ella's timbre, phrasing, and vibrato are unmatched. Many here speak of Anita O'Day's beauty. Well, Ella was no beauty; no high cheekbones or perfect nose. Vocally however, no competition.
@shellyboy9 You can´t compare vibrato because Anita does not has any or a different aproach to it. You can compare Ella in technique with singers of similar aproach or tecnique (Sarah Vaughan e.g.). That's why in strict sense and logic comparing Ella and Anita is pure nonsense. I like Ella very much. I think and is subjective that Anita by far has a more exact sense of rythm but this is IMO.
@jburidan Interesting. Because Ms. O'Day (who does use vibrato) has a poor vibrato in comparison, it's ludicrous to compare two jazz singers singing the same song. Okay, even though your response is illogical, how about purity of timbre, pitch control, range, scat ability, breathe control or any other vocal factor you can name. Are these irrelevant simply because you like O'Day more.
What I wouldn't have given to have met her and studied with her. I wish I could have taken vocal lessons from her. She is amazing. I tell you all the great singers are gone too soon. I wish they could have lived forever. Billie, Ella, Anita, Sarah, Ella, Carmen, Joe Williams, Nat King Cole, Billy Eckstein.. Dinah,. I love Anita's rendition of this song and how she ends it. I think she was under appreciated, but I'm glad I was hip to her.
I love this version of this song so much! Victor Young's sublime lyrics are so timeless. " A great symphonic theme, That Stella by starlight." Anita is so beautiful. Her phrasing. Her metre. Her expressiveness. I enjoy sharing this with friends on my facebook in the hope that they too will appreciate true poetic beauty.
@atomcraft I post with hope, too.. But sadly, a genius is a subtle thing and hard to recognize at first glance, you must open your ears and soul to even try to dig any art :)
@alexjrmarino It's not sad. You are who you are. I share this with those who are having a birthday. They who are, I am thinking of. A subtle point into their own collective lives as a gift that they may have never experienced if it wasn't for introductions. :)
I'm 79 and caught her in NYC at Basin Street whenI was 19 on a program with Gerry Mulligan. She absolutely blew me away with her renditions of ballads. Never forgot that night,
OK - too many comparisons here - why can't they ALL be good at what they do - I am a singer, AND a Stella, this is one of my favorite versions of this song! As far as I'm concerned, it's still open to new interpretation, which is what makes it a standard. Hey, maybe YOU should give it a whirl?! Love Ella, Christy, Nina, etc... room enough for ALL of them. So who cares about being a "Bigger Afficianado" - just sit back and enjoy! - oh, and no flames about my spelling - I know I am dyslexic - OK?
@twilson11208 June Christy is not in the same league, Truth is that she was a grat singer, but Anita can scat, can swing, sing ballads and had the most pefect timing, perfect pitch and tasteful styling of every tune she sings
I never heard Anita O'Day, just heard about her. I plan to play this song in a jazz group and wanted to hear it first by a singer, to get a more melodic idea of it. Wow ! I instantly fell in love with Anita.... No pyrotechnics or showing off, but tons of control, taste, nuances, and even more personality, beauty and elegance. A huge talent. I plan to really start listening to her now. Thanks a lot from bringing this jewel to us, who were raised looking at mediocrity at best.
@twilson11208 I have long appreciated June Christy myself, but I agree w/ Jburidan's comments about Miss O'Day. Even though Anita had her her low points, there's no denying that she had more talent than anyone of the present era, one (unfortunately) I am part of. How I wish I'd been alive to have seen her perform at her zenith, along w/ all of the many other artists who have come and gone; those who shall forever remain immortal with the bodies of work they have left behind for us to enjoy.
This was on CLASSY lady and she really put JAZZ on the mark with all her releases! She is one of the reasons I wish we had a WAY-BACK machine so the wife and I could go back in time to see multiples of her shows! One day in the future probably after I leave mother earth! Thanks for the post!

Im looking for a version of stella by starlight which has a main female singer and guys as backup singers. It sounds a bit like anita O day, but with male backup singers. Can anyone help me? thanks!
Was she beautiful? Yes she was! Her enormous talent included the way she dressed, the way she presented herself as well as the way she sang. Think of Kim Novak wearing the elegant gray suit in Vertigo, or Audrey Hepburn's simple black dress in Breakfast at Tiffanys. Anita had this style without the help of Givenchy. Her talent was so sweeping in scope that she made her self very beautiful. A joy to behold!

I listen to this again and again. Agree with another rater that this is "THE" version of this song. The trombones, the solid swing beat, an emotive sax and of course, Miss O'Day was perfect. Her singing and the phrasing.. oh, how it breaks my heart that we have virtually no singers left today that understand that phrasing. Thank you for posting this wonderful performance.
Please listen to the flamenco singer Enrique Morente sing this. Bajo las estrellas, Enrique Morente. Soooo crazy and beautiful, so so crazy and beautiful!
I adore this entire concert! My friend shared this concert with me one night, and Anita was just in the groove. Thank you so much for this post. Heaven:)
Love Miss O'Day. So elegant and simple in her appearance on this clip, and in my view a pretty woman. In Jazz on a Summer's Day, she's really dolled up and very chic.
But that doesn't much matter, really. Boy could she sing.
IMO she was an attractive woman, with very beautiful brown eyes, and great profile as you can see in the "jazz in a summerday video".. In this japan video she was 44 and the illumination of the tv studio is horrible. Certainly not a supermodel but , who cares? With such great talent and musicality
It is rumoured that, despit their 17 year age gap, Anita had an illicit affair with a Ron Cyrus , who was serving in the USAF at the time. As a result she gave birth to a son who indeed grew up to become Billy Ray. However a a result of her addictive nature she was unable to bring up the child. Ron and his wife did the right and expedient thing and the rest is history.
Hmmm... Yours is an interesting comment and, not knowing much about O'Day, I've been perusing websites and can't find a thing about that rumor. She would have given birth well into her forties, but that's not too uncommon. Well, if you ask me, I still say Anita O'Day and Miley Cyrus DO look alike, so as far as I'm concerned there may be truth in it. (Unless you made it up!)
Of course I made it up. It's snowing here and I was just bored. Sorry. It was fun to do. Actually it's not that big a stretch. She would have been 42 when Billy Ray was born and given her life style she could have had Ron as a toy boy for a while. He'd have been 25. Ho hum. Passes the time.
Hahahahahahaahahaha!!! That was good!!! You got me! BUT, it's 75 degrees here, and I should be outside lounging in it and not at this stupid computer!
I feel I should add (and I'm sure this goes without saying) that the ONLY resemblance is physical. This woman is a first rate musician. Miley Cyrus is....Miley Cyrus.
@jburidan - she's very classy looking, in my opinion. Thank God they couldn't make her whore herself like some of the current female singers. They literally get up on stage dressed like hookers. She refused to play that game. I'd say she was defo attractive.
@jburidan She's beautiful in every way. Those eyes, high checkbones, the lovely nose, the slight overbite, and engaging smile all may be subjective but to me are undeniable. But it is her vocal styling and physical expressiveness that captivate even today. And nobody could ever match her breakneck speed and phrasing on fast tunes, while the ballads simply stun the soul. Anita is to be enjoyed for the ages, a giant of Jazz.
@anitalives10 "a giant of Jazz" for real! She had her own style, for her whole career, there's only one of her, ever. And she's lovely on top of it :)
@tomlemos There are a lot of people, even amongst singers, less attractive than Anita. But her voice, in recordings such as this, brings so much to the music. Her vocal technique is a big part in this being a great interpretation of the song, and a big part of what made me keep listening. Who cares if she had a few visual imperfections?
@jblazedox Same here. Just turned 45, heard the name but knew nothing about her, just became a fan. The way she blends in with the band, like petals of a flower floating in a brook.
What an amazing instrument she was blessed with- no one alive today sings this way or can touch her although Diana Krall is pretty good but not as good as Miss O'Day
Ha! DK isn't even close. I wouldn't mention her vocally amongst the best anyway. I don't know why Anita's not often named amongst the greats. This woman IS Jazz singing. She could so easily rely on her lovely tone but the things she does with phrasing, her timing, inflections, the inventiveness of her arrangements... her swing! She helps me to understand how to swing more than any1. She's jumped to the top end of my favourite female jazz vocalist list. So inspirational.
Just saw the new documentary about her in theaters. What an amazing life, she's been through everything. Oh yeah..... and she can sing her ass off, the best!
From the beautiful shaped mouth, dazzling teeth and white-gloved arm raised to bring in the sax break this wonderful jazz vocalist embodies the smoothest elegance wrapped in the silkiest of swinging voices - terrific! For more, don't miss the YouTube Honeysuckle Rose clip.
Saw her 56 years ago in New York City. She could knock your socks off with her voice and phrasing. Never forgot that performance. I believe it was in one of the many jazz joints that were then available.Dressed in a very business like suit and she was truly a professional.

I believe it was in one of the many jazz joints that were then available.Dressed in a very business like suit and she was truly a professional.

...even better than Franks version. I just prefer this upbeat take - Chet Baker too - than Stella done as a balad. Great post
