Actually those are particular bats made by Creative Industries, not Shimpo. Not sure if you noticed, but there are little nobbly tabs on the edge of the bat to help you find the holes for the pins more easily. The 3 nobblies tab is for the wider drilled pin set configuration (such as you'd use on a Soldner wheel), and the 2 nobblies tab is for the smaller diameter drilled pin set configuration (I *think* Brent wheels usually have their pins drilled closer together) .
@CharlieBrown5240 I use a piece of chamois (non-synthetic), the kind you can get at any automotive supply store. That way you can cut it to the size you want and if you stick a fishing bobber to it, it won't get lost in your throwing water.
@LostInTheFr3shAir When I throw I think it helps a lot for the bat to be a little wet so when you slap down the clay it sticks to the bat really well. :)
Thanks so much for the corner vases I can't wait to try them;-) If you get the 7"square bats made by the same company you should have no problem... at least they haven't bothered me.. yet;-) Have a great day! KM
I LIKE it, what a cool pot!!!! I also hate those bats, mine always comes loose. I even tried one of those rubberized sheets under it and it still comes loose so I gave up on those bats all together. I now use a simple "pot lifter" on my wheelhead - an inexpensive thing I get from Bailey's Pottery supply, it works great. Well gotta run, thanks Simon for the info on the corner pot I'll have to give it a try.
I hate those bats!! I can never fit them on either!! I like the 'piggy back' bats as I call them where you have one master bat that fits the wheel and the other smaller ones that fit over it that you easily swap for the next one when it's time to throw the next pot. Since learning from you, though - I really only use the bats for bowls and larger pieces, other than that, I like the wheel head alone.
I like bats at have the holes already through them for the screws to be seen. I always hated those bat that you are using. It waste too much time in order to keep practicing in the mud...lol, but lovely corner wall vase by the way.
exelente idea!!!!!

You are excellent at pulling, but your centering always seems a bit off... regardless, great video.

Where would you get a leather for pottery - like the ones you use - in the UK?

just a quick question... why do you put water down on the wheel before the clay? does it really help it stay on the wheel? is that the best method?

Many times I'v also had to grind the flashing out of one of the holes on these bats,
because they don't sit level, and oops through the top!
They are real tough, biut you kindof get used to their oddity's
We use slip a lot because the holes are wearing out and getting very looose!

Simon I hope this works,
Sorry I know this is the wrong clip but,
I can't seem to post comments anymore!
I don't mind your speaking Spanish Simon,
and understand bits and pieces of it.
It is my understanding that it's not so close to the Spanish that many speak here in the US, very long story!
