When I was younger playing Newman Haas Racing (cir. 1998) this track and Road America were my two favorite tracks to race. I hope the Indy series gets back a lot of popularity over the next few years.
The cars sound and look fast. You get the sensation of real speed just looking at this race. Somehow the current chassis/engine combo doesnt quite convey that feeling. I really hope indycar reinvents itelf in the right way but keep the cars open wheel! not half closed wheel. I like some of Swifts proposals, would be nice to see multiple chassis engine combos though
06:25 quick yellow, it only took them two laps to get Fangio's car off the track and bring out the green. Nowadays it would have been 8-9 laps. The length of yellows are rediculous these days.
watch around 46:00 ... Boesel locks it up under pressure from Unser. now THAT was oval racing. Those cars rewarded courage and skill, and punished you for mistakes. You had to be able to drive otherwise you got burned. Back in the days when drivers had to have real skill, and Indycar really was Indycar. Big horsepower, low downforce, flat track, guys with real skill. I miss those races.
Thank you Indycar for posting this and the Homestead race. Please upload additional races, beginning with the 1994 season. Thank you again. It is much appreciated.
well seeings how the izod indycar series posted this vid, I want them to know that the delta wing spits in the face of indycars entire history. DONT USE IT. I dont care how mmuch money you may get. In the long run it will meanthe end of the series. i would know I'm a fan and I WILL NOT watch or but tickets to see that joke of a car race. CHOOSE LOLA!!!!!
Now that is an unhealthy attitude. I mean what's the chance of a succes? CART was lucky USAC lost many of its major players but the IRL won't get there. Atleast they are trying to listen to the fans. They even made a survey for the fans. Only for those registred on Indycarnation though.
Sorry, I mean Barnhart. Always have trouble spelling his name. Anyway, will be interesting to see what decision he makes. If he goes for another Dallara (or Swift, Lola or BAT) will the team owners just take their Delta Wing concept and race in their own series, leaving IndyCar dead? I'm not a Delta Wing fan, but at least the group realise a new sexy spec car (just like Champ Car's Panoz) won't turn things around by itself. I wish I had the answers to undo the damage of the last 15 years.
Anyway, please do post more of these full races - they're fantastic to see again. It's a bit late but at least post-merger the IRL are recognising that CART continued following the split.
Let's face it: the IRL was an embarassment in the early years and some truly mediocre names got to race at Indy not on merit, but because the quality teams & drivers were still racing elsewhere...
It's absolutely tragic to watch this and remember how great IndyCar SHOULD be and probably would still be today if it wasn't for Tony George's vanity.
1996: multiple chassis, multiple engines, cool looking/sounding cars, power, speed, a sense of history, a real threat to F1.
2010: ugly Dallara (almost qualifies for historic racing), same 2 teams winning again and again, tiny TV audience & reach, little more than another spec series like GP2.
You're dead right, I'd love to see cars like this back, everything worked with them. They were quick, sounded great and looked fantastic - not to mention the drivers and teams were friendly and happy to talk to you in the pits.
what! Is CART now part of IRL Indycar Series history or something now?
Its funny how the IRL poeple can upload this and still not see that this new single make chassis for 2012 will never ever replace the Lola's, Penske's, Swift's and Eagle's of 90's CART.
@BoilerByBlood: I've heard insiders suggest Dallara are a shoe-in with Barnhard due to their cosy, mutual relationship and certain promises Dallara have made. I wouldn't believe that the others have an equal chance at all. And if they do, a single cool looking chassis (I agree with you there), even with multiple body options, does not compare to the multiple chassis of CART. It will soon get as tedious as the Dallara.
@nickyp28 Yes, the IRL acquired the CART/CCWS history and record book along with the rest of the series in 2008. And most of the chassis makers don't want to compete now...
Funny; the IRL acquired all CART/Champ Car history (which is a continuation of the AAA and USAC National Championship) yet they don't use it.
"Scott Dixon become the all-time winningest driver in IndyCar history"
Really? Doesn't AJ have 67 wins? Just add the AAA, USAC, CART/CCWS, and IRL stats together instead of ignoring them. CART may have screwed some things up, but they never thought they were above the history if the sport by pretending they were completely different.
It's a scumbag move fro a scumbag parasite series. The IR:'s digusting revisionist history is one of the most sickening things about the league. So hypocritical. They talk about the rich history of Indycar, but they talk about Indycar as if it's only existed since 1996. Bunch of scumbags.
i think you misunderstand my friend. indycar in it's current incarnation HAS only been here since 1996. they don't claim c.a.r.t.s records at this point for legal reasons. be patient.
@FrodothePuppet I've noticed they started including the old AAA, USAC and CART/CCWS results this year instead of ignoring it. And when they say Dixon is winningest driver, they put a * next to and say under IRL sanction
@FrodothePuppet I think maybe the IRL acquired it all in order to keep it under wraps in an attempt to write new history. Its all about money and Tony George's wallet. The fans never got a look in.
They destroyed this track for the Panamerican Games in 2007... what a shame!!

Awesome track, the São Paulo track is a piece of shit, it's not made for Indy, they should've used this track again instead.

@murilospecht I believe they tore this track down to make way for some other facilities to be used for the next summer olympics. It's sad

You guys complain about today's Indy Car? Go, ask an old school F1-Fan having seen the 2010 Bahrain Grand Prix...
Against that, the Indy Car race in Sao Paulo felt like having found racers paradise. Greg Moore R.I.P.

It was a racy track but quite unsafe - the crash angle in the sharp turns was very dangerous. It's a shame it was torn down though.

Hence the name the 'roval' The road course Oval. Was a great track. Indycars need to be run on flat ovals.
