I'm a strong atheist, but I can still appreciate this for being a beautiful song. One of the best things about Judeo-Christianity is it's musical tradition, as well as some of the moral teachings.
I am a devout Christian, but my grandmother was Jewish and I did go to temple a lot as a younger man and this song has always touched my Jewish soul - it is such a Hebraic Christian song.
@sandrinepi - I am a devout Christian, but my grandmother was Jewish and I did go to temple a lot as a younger man and this song has always touched my Jewish soul - it is such a Hebraic Christian song.
A splendor in squalor... Sufjan encapsulates moments like few artists before him. Moments are a dime a dozen and he creates moments frozen in time. Well played senor, thank you.
This is not a christmas Carol but an Advent Carol it should never be sung during Christmastide. It is about the Children of Israel in Salvery longing for Messiah. It tell us Spiritual Israel about our salvery to sin and our freedom through Christ's death on the Cross. The Connection then; Christmas is the gateway to Good Friday and Easter and freedom from sin and death. "in this world you will have trouble. Fear not I have overcome the World"
I sang this years ago in my church choir. I still remember that moment, the Christmas mass, everyone quiet, then our voices ringing out into the vastness of the universe itself. I will never, ever, forget that.
Of all the hymns of Christmas, this is my favorite. It is about longing. An infinite longing in the human heart that nothing on Earth can satisfy. You know the beloved for which you yearn is real & that He is the source of all your happiness. Yet He is nowhere to be found in this world. It is an exquisite agony.
This is awesome. I've always loved this song (I actually got here from a latin rendition of it) and the way he's taken this hymn and made it "down home-y" without reducing the awesome is great.
y cant he make more songs like this instead of his new electric style. i remember the first song i heard by him was the lord god bird and i loved the sound and the lyrics y do people have to go with the flow. sufjan is great cause he is unique but there is to much techno and electric sounds these days. i think what made him great was his unique sounds
Those are recorders (also called blockflute, flute a bec, etc.). Tis' what came before the wooden flute that was also came before the modern Boehm system flute. Perfect sound for this song. Love Sufjan's arrangements...
Also, you guys should check out The Perennials. They are a new band and they are really great. You can find them by searching "theperennialsarewe" on youtube.
Absolutely brilliant version. It captures the spirit of the song beautifully and is a welcome change from the traditional choral versions. Lovely stuff - bring on CHRISTmas.
Good morning from Austria! This is WONDERFUL my dear and a pleasure to watch!!! I´m glad WorshipGuitar43 shared it to me. Thank you. 5 glittering ***** and Love and Light Sharine
@darth1994 the great thing is you don't have to believe that something that created every atom in this universe, science will be the answer.... Be well.

@mansfield1721 it thus speaks of our joy when celebrating the birth and coming of Christ to rescue us from our captivity. =)
