Yeah that's what the Danish think. I was there last year, attended a college about infrastructure and cycles in Copenhagen. All there new ideas and plans have already been done here, in Amsterdam.
We have green wave zones for cycle traffic lights, we have parking spaces for cycles at the train station. We have separate cycle paths. The guy in Copenhagen even said: how do we get more people to ride a bike? What keeps people doing so? Most were afraid.
I agree. Many Danes think that bicycling is evolved in Denmark, but being from that country and now living in Netherlands, I must admit that there's many steps, including the ones you mention. and even better: Here, the bikes have special priority in traffic lights, so many places, there's a green light for the bikes exclusively and for way longer than the cars. And you can cross for a red light when there's a special marking on the road.
I fully agree with you, benjaoming. I am from The Netherlands, now living in Denmark, so that is exactly the other way around. I really had to get used to the system here. And still, turning left as a cyclist in Denmark at busy crossroads, is quite complicated in my opinion. First you cross it, then you have to turn your bike 90º counter clockwise and wait for the trafic lights to turn green again. I remember that very first time: I said to myself: What kind of country is this? ;)
It's very amusing to see what some people find interesting to put on youtube....Maybe the guy on video comes from an other coutry, where that 'wheeling ramp' is something real special. Althaugh, here in Holland it's as normal as getting oversized meals in the US! As the matter affect, I walk down that stairs every goddamn day! But, I have to admit, I like it when people see the little details of our country! So nice video....
@3algebranie1 It is an amazing thing to us. I can only use my bicycle on weekends, just for fun, because it is impractical and dangerous to ride in traffic. I hope you appreciate what a wonderful country you have.
