I don't get it - why would old cigar-chomping record execs in the 60s put stuff out if they didn't know whether it would sell or not? And anyway the "hip, young executives" don't make decisions about what people should see. People don't have to watch MTV if they don't want, so they don't have to see the stuff they put out.
@SwordInAir Because people who don't think they know best are more likely to make happy mistakes - like releasing albums by the Mothers of Invention. There is not a chance in hell that Zappa would be signed today, or if signed, to a deal longer than a single album.
Back in the day, there were such things as "prestige artists" - people who didn't sell millions, but the label was proud to represent. Now, it is only about the money - screw art.
@postingoldtapes But if, like you say, the cigar-chomping guys in the 60s didn't think they knew best, then why did they have the job? Why were they in the music business at all if they didn't feel that they knew what would sell and what wouldn't?
FZ was the musician i could only hope to be-many years of playing here-and i really agree with 99% of the stuff being said in this interview. When did Rock turn to commercial-sellout -rubbish? i would say'85. And the so called "hip-in the know" fools took over(with the great help of the almighty corporate dollar machine) what do we have now? YOU TUBE is in the direct path MTV took!! when MTV came out--no commercials- yes, cheezy EXPERIMENTAL vidioes. and look what ya got now folks! Happy? not me.
Probably not. Zappa had so much respect for Ertegun that he named one of his sons after him. But he was the type of record executive will to release things that he didn't completely understand, and was willing to stand by music that he believed in and give an artist more than a single chance.
Albert Grossman, the founder of Bearsville Records, probably fit that stereotype more closely, but still allowed artists to experiment and even fail.
I was just wondering because I knew FZ had a lot of respect for him and that Ahmet Zappa is named after him. I have a documentary about Yes and Jerry Greenberg talks about Mr. Ertegun on it, and he tells a story about when he brought the idea of releasing a Muppets album on Atlantic, and Ahmet let him do it even though he had no idea what it was. I only asked because FZ's impression of whoever is similar to Greenberg's impression of Ahmet.
No no it's cool haha. I was just saying that Frank would have loved Dan, maybe not his music. But as far as what he's doing. And they're lyrics are pretty similar too in some respects. I'm just saying as far as youtube and myspace go, Frank Zappa would be in love with this era because music is so accessible and the man behind the desk saying, "Eh, no one will listen to this! I won't produce it!" No longer has as big of a say. I like Dan Deacon, but after 3-4 songs my ears start bleeding. haha.
That would be my critique of him as well, his songs are so poorly mixed, and they're almost proudly poorly mixed, I don't think he ever met a digitally produced track he didn't like. And his whole appearance of big loud bright colors remind me of my hipster kids I know but would rather not hang out with.
We have enough people like him. But you won´t see them on TV in these days. People just hang around on forums or youtube comment side, because more and more become ancioux about what happens if they go out on the streets. I´m one of them and i´m not proud...

Our alternative is to search for obscure unknown stuff online,no chance for breakouts.
well..i find it really weird that they showed him smoking, but they wouldnt let him say masturbation or "wet stuff".
even in an interview about designing what we see, hear, and even what we are, they had to censor it. i wonder if any of them have any clue how ironic and just plain dumb that is?

Jim, I'm really not sure if yr joking and looking to see how many reactions you'll get. On one hand, there really is great profundity to your comment about direct human interaction, on the other there's the pure absurdity of suggesting the internet's responsible for destroying great art. The net's the ultimate niche market and the fact that you'd make such a comment in an area which keeps Zappa's obscure yet brilliant notions alive is funny indeed. I applaud yr brilliant sense of irony! :-D
I agree and disagree. I disagree because I think the internet has helped expose the facade of these labels and fake acts. For instance, just how we're watching this interview! But I feel you though.
I know, right? Musical creativity was so much better when everybody had to learn off records and learn to tune with electronic tuners. You can't stop the march of progress though, so I think more emphasis should be put on people making their own music.
@jimlovesearth2 The internet helped music flourish I have no idea what you're talking about. The internet allows even the smallest most specific niches of music to see the light of day, and lets its fans find it easier. Record labels are not necessary for music production anymore. As far as no scene goes, you must have no friends because there are still many "scenes" and much social interaction taking place around music. Many people (myself and many friends included) go to live shows, etc.
@jimlovesearth2 I think your lonely perspective hinders your world view. The internet is an addition to social life, not a substitute. At least for most mentally healthy people.
@jimlovesearth2 - Nonsense! Create a "Scene" in your own Locale, & use the 'Net as a tool to do this....Like the Telephone, the Internet is here to stay....
he's so right about record companies these days, there was a time when groups like the Stooges and the Sex Pistols, got record deals,-I recently heard of band bragging kind of that some of their material just so happened to get listened to by the prez of Geffen, and then all of a sudden they were back on a label, without hardly trying. I thought to myself-I don't think you want the prez. of a record company being into your band if your kids-then I thought it' s probly more like he knew it'd sell.
Frank fought the good fight against censorship all his life. He also understood the capitalist approach to media, especially television. His comments are valid, and I think he justs wants to keep putting the message out there that you should think for yourself, and don't allow yourself to be brainwashed by the media, especially when it comes to having other people tell you what to like, what to think, and what to believe.
@bolillo239 I am so gratful, you could never know how much. Ihate country music, but I went out and bought all of The Dixie Chicks Cds for having the balls to call Bush what he is.... a murderer of innocent woman and children.
I watch Zappa Interviews and they MAKE SENSE I listen to the music and it makes sense.. I think Zappas are Important in this world!..what are your other favorite things that SIR Franko Zappa managed to do with himself?
the capitalist thing is beginning to erode everthing now. music and art are already lost to most people. sport too. now there isn't a product that isn't starting to deteriorate thanks to money worship. "if it doesn't bring in tons of cash it's worthless" that's capitalism for ya!
The PMRC won. They even bleeped out "masturbation" which is not and has never been a dirty word. "Ass" is also bleeped out because it's such an ugly animal. I've never heard anyone bleep out "donkey" before....
We need more people who actually employ their mind THEN speak. I miss Frank. In an age where mass conservatism has gone even further, we could do with a few more like him.
He was so articulate, funny, brilliant, and he really knew what he was talking about. On top of that he was an amazing composer, a great guitarplayer and singer and an amazing musician. One of the greatest men of all time.
Don't worry too much about the censored words folks you were all capable of working out what he was saying I didn't really think anything of it until I started reading the comments.Perhaps in a sub-concious way you were slightly thrilled at spelling it out for eveyone else. Well thank you for sharing but not on the first date thanks. Jeez what would Frank be saying about youtube?Hmmm
An "orifice" for sure. (...ASS! It needed to be said! Words must not be hidden, even if words need not be said!) Whats funny to me is that they had to censor masturbation. And "white stuff".
I recall even Billy Joel using the word "masturbate" in one of his early songs...can't remember which...it was jarring the first time you heard it...but then just became part of the song..
HE REALLY TELLS IT LIKE IT IS...cigar chomping old guys in charge DID foster more musical freedom within the "mainstream" !...today it's MUCH TOO controlled. (however, there are still some genuine FREE artists out there...probably starving)...even many so-called independent artists are trying to emulate the mainstream medias' tactics/musical styles.
Besides being a genius musician/composer this man was one of the great counter-culture figure heads of his generation. How many people can you name nowadays who'd have the balls to do the things he did? He stood up for freedom of all expression and intelligence in the face of oppressive fascist conservative religious nutjobs.
@simonandtheghost YES, HE WAS! THERE WAS NO ONE LIKE HIM AND THERE NEVER WILL BE! BUT WITH ALL THIS TALK ABOUT ZAPPA, YOU FORGOT THE WOMAN THAT STOOD BEHIND HIM AND BRACED HIM UP. GALE ZAPPA, A GREAT WOMAN AND ZAPPA'S ONE AND ONLY TRUE LOVE. I WOULD STILL DO THE DISHES FOR YOU GALE AND LOVE DOING IT.
hi I'm a republican what's masturbation? Is it to do with bringing in kids for sexual abuse to the whitehouse and making child prostitutes in iraq for our friends the saudis or helping our great friend Donald Rumsfeld making money from selling women and kids all over the world? I want to promote great american republican activities as mentioned. I listen to britney spears the best singer America has produced and don't care for this zappa chappie.
@MsPatty1952 No! I am not for real. Who could be 15 and play with Zappa and Freebo? Zappa and Captain Beefheart dosed me to walk through my mind. We were close friends until the day he died, because of it. I wrote " Dance Tunes of the Revolution" in 1967, because Zappa and I were standing at the front of Golden Gate Park and some guy was wearing a Che shirt and I asked him who he was, He didn't know! Zappa and I laughed until we cried. So, " Dance Tunes of the Revolution was born. Gale has it.
You're missing the point. There's always been good and bad music. The reason "bad" music gets out there today is because the the record execs in charge of putting out new acts are not taking chances on the the good stuff because of it's experimental nature. The music they put out is "safer" and in their eyes more likely to sell.
some executives of out company / cigar smolking flunkies in thr art form, battle of nvermore, qeen of logic took her cherry coffee. really need guys alive like frank zappa these days. to de-baPHLE phenomenon doodedoodoo
Liquid, room temperature, mercury is fairly safe to handle - it only becomes very toxic when its heated to a vapour. Also mercury attacks the brain and nervous system especially the nerve endings (see Minamata disease!) If Frank Zappa was poisoned as a kid by playing with mercury he would have lost most of his intelligence and his ability to walk, talk etc. - As for Zappa's prostate disease a radioactive agent he may have unknowingly ingested is more a likely cause than either mercury or smoking!
In the recent news from the UK there was a story of a still employed man celebrating his 101st birthday and he drank and smoked all his life! The singer Perry Como smoked 4 packs of cigarettes a day and he lived until he was 84! The fact that a person smokes doesn't mean they'll contract cancer or die from cancer at an early age. Also the smokers who do die from cancer die from cancer of the mouth, throat or lungs not of the prostate gland!
I'm not saying smoking doesn't cause cancer,it does, but not in every case plus smoker's contract mostly lung, mouth or throat cancer not prostate cancer.
My original specualtion, was that maybe the FBI/CIA eliminated the controversial Zappa by poisoning him with a radioactive substance that caused his prostate cancer rather than "accepting" someone else's contention that Franks's smoking was to blame for his prostate disease!
Frank was actually getting into some serious economic politics in Czechoslovakia a year before he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. The United States government threatened the Czech government and forced them to stop associating with Zappa. Frank wasn't afraid to criticize the US government and they weren't happy about that.
pure pressure sucks, eh,I've told people in their face that I dont smoke, and they shake their heads, but at least 30 years dont the line I wont be suffering from breathing problems, thank God he made me different
I read Frank's book once ("The Real Frank Zappa Book") and I sometimes wondered if the CIA or FBI was somehow responsible for his untimely death? Like Frank could have been slipped some radioactive isotope in his food or drink?
Huh? Frank smoked like a chimney. Frank died of cancer. 1 = 1. The radioactive elements put into his body were from the radioactively treated fertilizer used in growing tobacco and they were put there by Frank. Brilliant musician and stunning intellect, but a complete ninny on the subject of smoking. Yes, he died of prostate cancer rather than lung cancer but there is no doubt that his system was compromised by smoking.
Years of sucking in carcinogens and carbon monoxide is supposed to have no ill effects? Are you claiming that Frank's cancer was completely unrelated to daily consumptions of a cancer-causing substance?

Some things I learned from Zappa interviews and conversations:
1)In every Zappa interview ever constructed - Zappa "wipes the floor with his opponent". This will always be the case and cannot be disputed.
2)No matter what questions are put to him, it's always a" face off", and Zappa always "wins".
3)If you are to criticise anything said by Zappa, you are both deluded, and in support of the NWO.

Frank's bang on as usual.
the capitalist thing is beginning to erode everthing now. music and art are already lost to most people. sport too. now there isn't a product that isn't starting to deteriorate thanks to money worship. "if it doesn't bring in tons of cash it's worthless" that's capitalism for ya!
NameThatSport 3 years ago 10
you missed the point here,
frank was no critic of capitalism itself

The PMRC won. They even bleeped out "masturbation" which is not and has never been a dirty word. "Ass" is also bleeped out because it's such an ugly animal. I've never heard anyone bleep out "donkey" before....

We need more people who actually employ their mind THEN speak. I miss Frank. In an age where mass conservatism has gone even further, we could do with a few more like him.
MyDogmaAteYourKarma 3 years ago 4
He was so articulate, funny, brilliant, and he really knew what he was talking about. On top of that he was an amazing composer, a great guitarplayer and singer and an amazing musician. One of the greatest men of all time.

Don't worry too much about the censored words folks you were all capable of working out what he was saying I didn't really think anything of it until I started reading the comments.Perhaps in a sub-concious way you were slightly thrilled at spelling it out for eveyone else. Well thank you for sharing but not on the first date thanks. Jeez what would Frank be saying about youtube?Hmmm
klive555 3 years ago 5
I bet when he said "They're talking out of both sides of their (bleep)", he said orifice at the end of the sentence.
Chickenpainter111 3 years ago
An "orifice" for sure. (...ASS! It needed to be said! Words must not be hidden, even if words need not be said!) Whats funny to me is that they had to censor masturbation. And "white stuff".
tayloreh 3 years ago
I recall even Billy Joel using the word "masturbate" in one of his early songs...can't remember which...it was jarring the first time you heard it...but then just became part of the song..
maydom04 3 years ago
HE REALLY TELLS IT LIKE IT IS...cigar chomping old guys in charge DID foster more musical freedom within the "mainstream" !...today it's MUCH TOO controlled. (however, there are still some genuine FREE artists out there...probably starving)...even many so-called independent artists are trying to emulate the mainstream medias' tactics/musical styles.

Besides being a genius musician/composer this man was one of the great counter-culture figure heads of his generation. How many people can you name nowadays who'd have the balls to do the things he did? He stood up for freedom of all expression and intelligence in the face of oppressive fascist conservative religious nutjobs.

hi I'm a republican what's masturbation? Is it to do with bringing in kids for sexual abuse to the whitehouse and making child prostitutes in iraq for our friends the saudis or helping our great friend Donald Rumsfeld making money from selling women and kids all over the world? I want to promote great american republican activities as mentioned. I listen to britney spears the best singer America has produced and don't care for this zappa chappie.
stargate669 3 years ago 2
@stargate669 ARE YOU FOR REAL?
MsPatty1952 1 year ago
@MsPatty1952 No! I am not for real. Who could be 15 and play with Zappa and Freebo? Zappa and Captain Beefheart dosed me to walk through my mind. We were close friends until the day he died, because of it. I wrote " Dance Tunes of the Revolution" in 1967, because Zappa and I were standing at the front of Golden Gate Park and some guy was wearing a Che shirt and I asked him who he was, He didn't know! Zappa and I laughed until we cried. So, " Dance Tunes of the Revolution was born. Gale has it.

so true the music buisness is suffering but also cause of bad music today!
godwhyisthistaken 3 years ago
You're missing the point. There's always been good and bad music. The reason "bad" music gets out there today is because the the record execs in charge of putting out new acts are not taking chances on the the good stuff because of it's experimental nature. The music they put out is "safer" and in their eyes more likely to sell.

OlymPigs2010 3 years ago
Why did a show called 'The Cutting Edge' bleep out the words 'masturbation' and 'ass'? What timid fucks!

maddermofo 3 years ago
If you read Zappa's book then you know his poppa used to bring home Mercury for him to play with. :)
As I remember it he even added a second sentence for emphasis, "I played with mercury!". Hee. Great book. :)

OlymPigs2010 3 years ago
fool, that was only one case, compare that to the many cases of contracting cancer from smoking. USE YOUR BRAIN!, smoking will kill you
MUN7001 3 years ago
life will kill you

MUN7001 3 years ago
It just takes a little longer. Wait for it, you'll see.
hinneinisannidanni 3 years ago
I'm not saying smoking doesn't cause cancer,it does, but not in every case plus smoker's contract mostly lung, mouth or throat cancer not prostate cancer.
My original specualtion, was that maybe the FBI/CIA eliminated the controversial Zappa by poisoning him with a radioactive substance that caused his prostate cancer rather than "accepting" someone else's contention that Franks's smoking was to blame for his prostate disease!
OlymPigs2010 3 years ago
why would they need to kill him? what's so big about him that the FBI need to go down on him like that
MUN7001 3 years ago
Frank was actually getting into some serious economic politics in Czechoslovakia a year before he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. The United States government threatened the Czech government and forced them to stop associating with Zappa. Frank wasn't afraid to criticize the US government and they weren't happy about that.

Smoking? Bad for you? What the fuck... I guess I just never knew. No one ever talks about how smoking is bad for you. Ever. Maybe I should quit!

Peer pressure, bro. But yeah, I agree.

I read Frank's book once ("The Real Frank Zappa Book") and I sometimes wondered if the CIA or FBI was somehow responsible for his untimely death? Like Frank could have been slipped some radioactive isotope in his food or drink?
OlymPigs2010 3 years ago
