  • One of my favorite intros

  • Everyone harps on about saving private ryan, but this film is way better!...personally, I don't care if it's about Germans, Brits, Russians, American's..it doesnt matter in the context of this film...it could be about any side...brilliant

  • I love movies retracting the "bad" guys, gives you a different perspective of things

"History is written by the victor"

  • I can't help but notice that I've never, ever seen a movie told from the perspective of true, believing SS Nazi Soldiers. I really want to see this movie. I understand it's taboo...

And frankly, if the movie was done RIGHT, and TRUE to history, if not shown with discretion, many children might find heroes in the SS.

But I dont see this as a reason or excuse to lie about history.

  • @TheCaptainmoemoe the ss were magnificent but the winners make the history the blitz was peanuts to what we did to innocent german babies in dresden hamburg berlin etc also on d day churchill said take no prisoners for the first 48 hours that means kill them but its ok when we do it.

  • Most exciting, hitting and beatiful intro I have ever seen.

  • @Niktin my grandpa was in a gulag and he wasnt russian. He was polish and the russians sent him there because he could shoot well and were scared he would lead a revolt. Then they let him out when they were losing the war. If my grandpa was there for that i cant imagine how many others there were. Stalin starved ukraine and killed millions teachers, doctors, etc even his best friends because he was paranoid. Stalin killed more than hitler. LOL communism every1s equal one man controls everything

  • amazing intro

  • whats the name of the song?

  • @TheStealthx808 if I was feeling sarcastic I would say google it my friend, however after finding the complete film on here: Hänschen klein

  • @TheStealthx808 the song is called : " Hänschen Klein"

  • Sorry thats 0:11

  • Stiener is such a fuckin badass!

  • AHHHHHHHHHHH I so remember like it was yesterday !

  • My father in law was in the SS not by his choice at the end of the war, he was 17 and in the luftwaffe, what transpired at the end was horrible for him and all of my family! Interred in the Russian pow camp along with his father and my wifes Grandfather on her mothers side, only 5% returned to Germany, all of them came home but in pieces. Nothing good came of that war! or will of any war ever!!!!

  • @Krylogenic Hey ya dumb little retard! I'll bring a few facts into the situation:

No, lol, the death rate of German POWs wasn't 95% you dumb shit. It was roughly ~20%. Not high at all considering the food shortages in the USSR at this time.

  • @Nikitns shows how little you fuciing know you stupid asshole go fuck yourself, 20% what a fucking moron I be you dont even know that 78 thousand AMERICANS were held in Gulag camps and this was released by Boris Yeltsin to Clinton so dont call me name stupid ass, your the one with zero fucking knowledge. only 5% maybe 7% came back thats a fact of the 98 thousand marched off from Stalingrad only 5 thousand came home and many of them died in the first year home. Find out WTF your history is.

  • @Krylogenic

lol you little retard. Stop with the conspiracy theories about the Americans, first of all.

Second, the Stalingrad POWs made up maybe ~2% of total German POWs.

Third, just to enlighten you a bit about their status: most of them were half dead before the Soviets even captured them. Starvation, cold and disease does take its toll when the army-command doesn't give a shit about their troops, like was the case with the 6th army.

  • @Nikitns Stupid ass its a matter of fact you retard, Check it out and google it if you have enough fucking brains, FUCKING TWits like you are dumb as shit because in todays schools they dont teach anything and most of you dont know more than xbox or playstation, STFU if you stupid ass and my father in law and his father were in the Gulag camps and they said at least 90% died before they were released and many were shipped to camps that nobody came back from. Read GULAG by Anne Applebaum.

  • @Krylogenic I'm 18 and I'll leave 4 the army for 1 year and after that to uni. You're some 45 year old trashcan raging on the internet.

    1. Your "father" is a lying f*k then. You'd need to be retarded 2 think the death rates were above 90%.. lmfao

    2. Stop trolling. I won't read any "GULAG" shit by any1. death rates in GULAG camps averaged at around 10% during the war and 4% b4 and after. This is not taking into account people who died while being transported.

  • @Nikitns Shut your fucking pie hole you stupid little fucking chicken shit bastard I am a combat disabled veteran and I bet you will never get pass basic pussy!! Shit talkers are many on youtube and I see a bunch of godamn xbox warriors and playstation fantatsy boys. Join the Army I am retired from the Army and go get educated dumbass!

  • @Nikitns As I figured you a 18 year old know it all Russian who cant believe your country murdered 40 million people and many in the Gulag camps including 78 thousand American soldiers and its a matter of fact, Boris Yeltsin told the truth before he left office. and 90 % stands! They should reopen the Gulag camps for all you stupid asses and see how long you would live! a few weeks best! So keep trolling you yt pussy!

  • @Nikitns 10% thats laughable the U.S. Prisons average that in a 5 year period, from murder and other bad things happening, so your figures are ridiculous, Stalin ground the peasants to dust and worked them to make the country rich on thier blood, 40 million is a good estimate he stole their farms land and everything they owned and then worked them to death slave labor at a scale unimaginable Stalin made hitler look good! Russia has a bloody past and you have to deal with it!

  • @Krylogenic fact is you're a moron. I cba 2 waste time on your pathetic fantasies and conspiracy theories.

roughly ~ 1,8 million people died in the GULAG and due to executions. Over a period of 30 years.

Please try to use your brain sometimes, you midaged little retard ;)

  • @Nikitns What a jackass, you will never succeed in the army they probably will keep you for KP duty or target practice, more likely a wash out or as we called it TFD Training Failure Discharge, with your block headed attitude and mentality you will likely end up in the stockade or ccf which would be amusing have fun fucktard and if you pass and get your fucking twot head on right maybe you will learn some history, since I majored in History in college, GROW a PAIR PUSS!

  • I fukin loved the Nazis I so wished I could of wAtched the rise of it in Germany I'd of loved I ain't a Nazi or anything I just thought it was a passionet exiting time . I mean look now wverybody fat as fuk playing fukin computer games how fukin lame

  • I'm not emotional compared to most at all, yet I somehow wept watching this as a grown man.

  • ah the good old days...

  • I would really love to know, what is the song that comes with the Hanschen klein, because there are two, hanschen klein and a military march one...

  • @FrederEngelh .Hi,Ithink it is the Horst Wessel lied lied, that they have tied in with hanscen klein.Take care.Paul

  • @pinkfrog6 Ehm,im afraid that is not,i know very well the die fahne hoch and there is no part of it...in fact this march sounds a little like "Prussian" marches...dont you think? peace...see you later

  • hysterical nationalism we are always so close to it in times as these ,,, military expansion and politics through other means think it can't happen again ...?

  • You'd all better like this movie, if not you'll be having a bayonet, right up your ass.

  • Unforgettable.

  • Film remarquable avec James Coburn !

    +1

  • a terrible film.. classic western propaganda.. super-nazis killed 10 soviets per loss.. retarded

  • @Nikitns Your exagerating but in fact the Germans did kill a lot more Russians per loss than the other way around and so what. The Russians produced more tanks in 1944 than the Germans did the whole war. Right until the end of the war the Germans were the better trained and led army on the battlefield but again so what. Hitler totaly screwed them over with insane strategic decisions and the Russians got a lot better than they were in 1941. The movie reflects these realities.

  • @chris7453089 Nah, the problem's you're a moron. What "facts"? What "realities"?

The Axis lost 5million men in the East. The Soviets 10 million, of which 3 million died in Nazi concentration camps. It was a bloodbath for both sides, but nowhere near the trash about "10:1" kill ratios.

So please, use your brain instead of commenting trash like "Soviets built more tanks in '44 than Germans did throughout the war" or "the Nazis killed lots of Russians per their own dead".

    OK?

  • insanely great film. Chilling intro sequence.

  • Great movie!

After THE WILD BUNCH this is Peckenpaw's BEST!!!!

  • Epic

  • An entire nation as a hostage of a mad man and his dark comrades! How could this happen?

2:14 -- he lived a dolce vita at his Berghof and millions of young men died for his mad ideas!!!

  • @ruhri0411 he died for his ideas eventually and stayed in berlin to the end taking his own life so it wasn't all a bed of roses you got to remember also two very agressive regimes prevelant at this time it was one or the other, but its strange really when you think he was laughed at to begin with they all thought him just a comical oddity but later it proved it was far more serious.

  • The worst thing is this is happening this day. The political movement called Islam.

  • @JenTak19 I agree with you

  • @JenTak19 how about you get an education or shut up?

  • Comment removed

  • @Nikitns It's obviously that you don't read the news or history, so you should get an education. Islam is a political movement worse than Nazism, Islam have caused over 270 million human life though the history. 80 million just in India, more people than the 1st and 2nd World War put together. Since 9/11 Islam has caused the death 16 000 so called infidels, for the sake of Muhammed, while only 12 people got killed for other religions. Islam must be put to sleep for good.

  • @JenTak19

mate.. I cannot be arsed to make good arguments because you won't understand them.

Just accept it. you are wrong. Your opinion is full of shit. Just drop it. If you want to learn, then forget all the shit you think you know. Just start reading anew (from sites like wikipedia).

  • @Nikitns I would like to hear your arguments! bring it on bitch! It was you who told me to shut up, you started this whole mess. And you can't say I'm wrong if you don't present the argument that proves the opposite. The only way you can stop this coversation is if you remove your comment where you tell me to shut up, and then I will remove my comments, except my original statement you first commented on.

  • 1:50 very interessting fotage. You can see a romanian solider in the foreground (Notice helmet) and the others are germans (They wear Stahlhelmets which were also used by romanians often but the proof is: watch the k98 rifle one of them aims, romanians had their own rifles).

So you see german and romanian soliders in the same trench in combat, rare scene.

  • @JSLegoMaster could 1:53 be a romainian as well? the vz 26

  • No i dont think so, the helmet is clearly german and when germany occuiped checkoslovakia they took much of the check.slovakians army equipment and the zb26 was so used often by germans.

  • @JSLegoMaster Excellent spot: in fact the soldier in the foreground is wearing a Romanian helmet and then there are two soldiers in German 'coal scuttle' helmets, one of whom throws the grenade, then there is another Romanian-helmeted soldier furthest away. As you say, amazing to see Germans and Romanians in the same trench... things must have been bad!

  • @ Tackryon: The music starting at 2:10 is movie music but the melody is based on the "Horst-Wessel-Lied", the anthem of the Nazi party.

  • One user did not recieve the Iron Cross. :D

  • i wonder whos that girl that appear in the 0:33, does anyone know her name or is she just an unknown girl?

  • @tigress66 I'm not sure but it looks like Leni Reifenstahl (I'm sure I spelled that wrong)

  • What is the name of the song starting at 2:10 please?

  • @Tackryon As Far As I Know All This Music, Except "Hansen Klein", Is Composed By Ernest Gold.

  • @Moviethemecollector1 Oh yeah? Because I am almost sure that I heard this March in another movie, I can't remember if that was a Soviet or a Nazi March.

  • Its a pretty transfigured version of the Horst Wessel Lied, the Party anthem of the NSDAP and the second german athem (They first played deutschlandlied then Hort Wessel lied) in the time of the national socialism.

  • Great video!!!!! :-)

  • Where can I watch this, I cant find it in stores or on the web, and I dont feel like spending 20 bucks then waiting a month...

  • One of the better intros in fact.

  • Cros of Iron, Duel - Enemy at the gates, Stalingrad, Das Boot and Tora Tora Tora are the best war films on earth...

  • James Mason played a German General in '67 "The Blue Max" Good dogfight footage>

  • A brilliant war / anti-war film. Those Hollywood "Blockbusting" Vietnam war films cannot touch the true horror and insanity of war that this film depicts.

  • great film.

  • Sergeant Rolf Steiner, sir. lol, lmao.

  • The best anti war clip of all time.

  • Any idea who the astounding woman in 0:33 is?

  • Ino clue, but good chance Goebbels probably had a go or two with her... bastard

  • @lotusmountain2

I Think its Lida baarova or marika Rökk

  • Peliculón

  • the lyrics in english dont ryme but here you go....... little hans goes alone out into the wild world looking great with stick and hat he is in good spirits but his mother cries so much for she no longer has little hans thus the child changes its mind turning back home swiftly i think this is right sorry if it isnt. defo my favorite war film ever. love this song too.... and all the background pictures etc are fucking awesome.
  • @ 2:27 Looks like the Russian dude is telling the POW, yea you are fucked now.

  • One of the greatest movies ever made. What to say about intro??? Just amazing!

Can someone translate lyrics on English?

  • @thelamb75 Its a kid nursery rhyme about being away long time and returning a man.

  • Deutschland Uber Alles

  • Best war film ever.

  • the lyrics

    Hänschen klein ging allein

    in die weite Welt hinein.

Stock und Hut stehn ihm gut,

    ist gar wohl gemut.

    Aber Mama weinet sehr,

hat ja nun kein Hänschen mehr.

Wünsch dir Glück sagt ihr Blick,

    kehr nur bald zurück!

  • What is the name of the song the childeren are singing?

  • Hänschen klein

  • hanssen klein

  • best movie ever

  • Great movie! I love the intro.

WWII in Europe was defined more in the russian front than in Normandy or The Ardennes.

  • the tune was written by Mozat, the text is an old nursery rhyme basically

  • By the way, the movie is based on the book Cross of Iron which is not bad reading and explains a lot of background that the movie obviously didn't have time for.

  • No part of the Horst Wessel Lied is used in this intro, either lyrics or music. I don't know where the march comes from, possibly it was composed for the movie. I saw this movie with my dad when it came out in 1977 right before I went into the army and spent three years in Germany, and other places later. But that's another story...

  • Unfortunately yes, it was composed only for the movie. Pity, it's a pretty catchy tune.

  • Actually, the Horst Wessel Lied is used. It is modified and I will admit that I didn't notice it until it was pointed out to me. It starts at 2:09 but it has been changed a bit and is a lot more up-beat. Still, if you listen you can hear the same basic melody.

  • The Horst Wessel Lied was the official song of the NSDAP, named for a party martyr. Hanschen Klein is an old children's song still sung in Germany. The opening credits show Hitler Jugend hiking. The official song of the Hitler Jugend was Vorwarts! Vorwarts! and was written by Baldur von Schirach, the Reichsjugendfuhrer during most of the 1930's. The credits are simnply contrasting the boys of the 1930's in the HJ that grew into manhood and became the soldiers who fought in the war.

  • best opening ever

  • This is a great film, possibly better than Saving Private Ryan for its grit and realism. Its message was no doubt intended for the Vietnam generation who would have been watching it at the cinema at that time. A brilliant film with a very strong underlying message. Go and buy the dvd!

  • too true, its a truely epic film, i had it on vhs and got it on dvd.

  • I had my DVD of the Cross of Iron in my car when it got stolen. I got my car back but no Cross of Iron :(

  • lol must have been a shit car XD

  • yah, a saab 9000i 84-. Got it back though :D

  • @FredrikEastling

even a filthy thief can have good taste in film!

  • @FredrikEastling

At least the thugs had good taste!

  • @FredrikEastling even car jackers appreciated this masterpiece haha :P

  • @FredrikEastling the thief obviously had good taste in movies

  • @FredrikEastling

    lol !!

  • @FredrikEastling

The thief knew what was good! :-)

  • @grabcanovic Yeah, hell that movie was worth more than the car!

  • @FredrikEastling because the thief loved the movie so much!

  • @FredrikEastling

they were more interested in the Cross of Iron dvd than ur car ;(

  • @rpnetz To be honest I'd rather lose the car instead of the movie. Going to have to send that car to the scrapyard anyways. The woman who stole the car had been a drug dealing prostitute. I kinda don't want to get recognized like someone that knows her at all. And she had slept in the car and there were broken glass and cheese cake all over the car lmao.

  • @FredrikEastling Atlist that thief had good taste of warmovies :D

  • hänschen klein

    ging allein

    in die weite welt hinein..

this means little Hans alone in the wide world.

maybe it means, in this intro, that Germany is little Hans and the wide world is the Soviet Union??

  • I've actually read the book before I saw this film. although it's a good war film but it's short. If u lot manage to get your hands on the actual novel then read the whole thing cos there's alot more in the book than what the film has...ps no offense to the film of course.

  • Does anyone here understand the film ?

  • There singing "1 2 3 4" cause their marching

  • germany olways BEST and army

  • any1 know the name of the song

  • I belive, that the title of this song is "Henschen Klein". Little John in english. :)

  • It's a mix: The first song is "Hänschen Klein, a old german children song. The instrumental from 2:09 til the end is the Horst Wessel - Song ( A Nazi Hymn) who is strictly forbidden to play or sing in Germany.

  • Is really this a version of Horst Wessel? it sounds quite diferent. I was interested in knowing the title of this song, although i'd say that it is definitely not horst wessel, if anyone knows please post it.

Even more if someone knows where to find the score post it as well.

    Thank you

  • In the german wikipedia site of this movie you can read under "Trivia" that it shall be the Horst Wessel song. You must put in the German Title. The german title of this movie is" Steiner - Das Eiserne Kreuz"

  • Thank you man, very nice of you.

  • Is thee beggining song Hot Cross Buns?

  • shut up just shut up.

  • spectacular

  • One of the best movie intro sequences ever, an artistic masterpiece. :-)

  • @aeiou88 It is right. this is better then tom Hanks/Spielberg war movies and tv series production.I like very much this intro, including the two kind of music, the lovely Hanschen Klein and the German March.

This movie is really a Masterpiece.

  • fucking commies

  • im sorry for your grandfather !!! unfortunatly the germans are always suposed to be the bad guys ... but one thing is for sure if they would not start the war the fucking russians would so .... the few countries that after the war were not in the hands o the russians can thanks to the germans ...not the allies definitly...my compliments and respect for the brave german soldiers .... fuck stalin !!!!!!!!!!!

  • idiot, if hitler didnt destroy europes armies in the first place, thouse countrys coud have defended themself against the russians. No thank the allies that liberated half of europe and keep the commies at bay.

  • Comment removed

  • this is such a strong intro. maybe too long for the present youth but i dont have problems with that. i love the old pictures with the kindersong, in my country we have the same children's song but other lyrics.

  • My grandfather died on the eastern front, the intro is epic

  • was it a german or a soviet? or an ally of those?

  • german

  • Well, maybe if you have a time/space teletransportation device.

I'd advise you set yours for "1942; Stalingrad."

    Auf Wiedersehn, baby.

  • great movie and best intro

  • um.. what is that movie about?

  • havent seen the movie in a while but it focuses on fighting in the eastern front and about two men of different character...one is in pursuit of glory, he wants a iron cross to show he is a brave soldier...the other man (i believe his name is steiner) doesnt care for glory but fights for his men and to survive

  • This intro shows the spoils & glories of the latter Hitler era very well. Auf weidersehen.

  • ...James "The Legend" Mason!

  • The credit sequence is really well done.

I think Cross of Iron deserves to be up there with Platoon and all the other classic war movies.

  • well said its agreat movie

  • wich song(s) are that?

  • So creepy hearing these angelic voices sing and in the background you see the baying crowds of hypnotised civilians and German soldiers fighting on the Ostfront.

  • Geiles Intro, aber der Film is ma nich so der Hammer, kann jedem nur den Film "Deathwatch" emfehlen...

  • the actual theme i was talking about was the main theme of indiana jones not the march used in the last crusade

  • great film with brilliant theme.

At 1:09 it sound a bit like John Williams'

    Indiana Jones Theme.

  • this music is the R.O.A. marschlied.

The nazi march in indiana Jones is not a John Williams creation, but the Königgrätzermarsch, a famous german march.

  • Königgrätzermarsch is actually a famous Prussian military march :) but close enough.

  • Amazing movie

  • good movie

  • I didnt remember this movie, thanks for reminding me. Got to check it soon as possible. :)

  • A great movie, with a great director Peckinpah, great actors Coburn, Mason and Schell, a great beginning with the great song 'Hanschen klein'. 5 stars.

  • almost scary...mix of feelings

  • Thanks, man.

  • Nice music. ¿What's it name?

  • Hanschen Klein

  • I've just looked up the lyrics to the song, and its a wonderful use of the song when compared to the film and Germany of this era.

  • mine too

  • If you like WWI filmes go wacht 'The Lost Batallion'

  • Danke! :P

  • One of my favorite war films
