The Russians produced more tanks in 1944 than the Germans did the whole war. Right until the end of the war the Germans were the better trained and led army on the battlefield but again so what. Hitler totaly screwed them over with insane strategic decisions and the Russians got a lot better than they were in 1941. The movie reflects these realities.

Its a pretty transfigured version of the Horst Wessel Lied, the Party anthem of the NSDAP and the second german athem (They first played deutschlandlied then Hort Wessel lied) in the time of the national socialism.
A brilliant war / anti-war film. Those Hollywood "Blockbusting" Vietnam war films cannot touch the true horror and insanity of war that this film depicts.

No part of the Horst Wessel Lied is used in this intro, either lyrics or music. I don't know where the march comes from, possibly it was composed for the movie. I saw this movie with my dad when it came out in 1977 right before I went into the army and spent three years in Germany, and other places later. But that's another story...
Actually, the Horst Wessel Lied is used. It is modified and I will admit that I didn't notice it until it was pointed out to me. It starts at 2:09 but it has been changed a bit and is a lot more up-beat. Still, if you listen you can hear the same basic melody.
The Horst Wessel Lied was the official song of the NSDAP, named for a party martyr. Hanschen Klein is an old children's song still sung in Germany. The opening credits show Hitler Jugend hiking. The official song of the Hitler Jugend was Vorwarts! Vorwarts! and was written by Baldur von Schirach, the Reichsjugendfuhrer during most of the 1930's. The credits are simnply contrasting the boys of the 1930's in the HJ that grew into manhood and became the soldiers who fought in the war.
This is a great film, possibly better than Saving Private Ryan for its grit and realism. Its message was no doubt intended for the Vietnam generation who would have been watching it at the cinema at that time. A brilliant film with a very strong underlying message. Go and buy the dvd!

havent seen the movie in a while but it focuses on fighting in the eastern front and about two men of different character...one is in pursuit of glory, he wants a iron cross to show he is a brave soldier...the other man (i believe his name is steiner) doesnt care for glory but fights for his men and to survive
So creepy hearing these angelic voices sing and in the background you see the baying crowds of hypnotised civilians and German soldiers fighting on the Ostfront.
A great movie, with a great director Peckinpah, great actors Coburn, Mason and Schell, a great beginning with the great song 'Hanschen klein'. 5 stars.

Its a pretty transfigured version of the Horst Wessel Lied, the Party anthem of the NSDAP and the second german athem (They first played deutschlandlied then Hort Wessel lied) in the time of the national socialism.

No part of the Horst Wessel Lied is used in this intro, either lyrics or music. I don't know where the march comes from, possibly it was composed for the movie. I saw this movie with my dad when it came out in 1977 right before I went into the army and spent three years in Germany, and other places later. But that's another story...

Actually, the Horst Wessel Lied is used. It is modified and I will admit that I didn't notice it until it was pointed out to me. It starts at 2:09 but it has been changed a bit and is a lot more up-beat. Still, if you listen you can hear the same basic melody.

The Horst Wessel Lied was the official song of the NSDAP, named for a party martyr. Hanschen Klein is an old children's song still sung in Germany. The opening credits show Hitler Jugend hiking. The official song of the Hitler Jugend was Vorwarts! Vorwarts! and was written by Baldur von Schirach, the Reichsjugendfuhrer during most of the 1930's. The credits are simnply contrasting the boys of the 1930's in the HJ that grew into manhood and became the soldiers who fought in the war.

This is a great film, possibly better than Saving Private Ryan for its grit and realism. Its message was no doubt intended for the Vietnam generation who would have been watching it at the cinema at that time. A brilliant film with a very strong underlying message. Go and buy the dvd!

@rpnetz To be honest I'd rather lose the car instead of the movie. Going to have to send that car to the scrapyard anyways. The woman who stole the car had been a drug dealing prostitute. I kinda don't want to get recognized like someone that knows her at all. And she had slept in the car and there were broken glass and cheese cake all over the car lmao.

I've actually read the book before I saw this film. although it's a good war film but it's short. If u lot manage to get your hands on the actual novel then read the whole thing cos there's alot more in the book than what the film has...ps no offense to the film of course.

It's a mix: The first song is "Hänschen Klein, a old german children song. The instrumental from 2:09 til the end is the Horst Wessel - Song ( A Nazi Hymn) who is strictly forbidden to play or sing in Germany.

In the german wikipedia site of this movie you can read under "Trivia" that it shall be the Horst Wessel song. You must put in the German Title.The german title of this movie is" Steiner - Das Eiserne Kreuz"

havent seen the movie in a while but it focuses on fighting in the eastern front and about two men of different character...one is in pursuit of glory, he wants a iron cross to show he is a brave soldier...the other man (i believe his name is steiner) doesnt care for glory but fights for his men and to survive
