  • Too bad the pdf's aren't there anymore. D:

  • @missymaxxx Daamn your right.. I could use em too

  • Thanks for these lessons man.Big help

  • Very helpful and motivating. I love the simple approach.

Having learned to read music now, I've found the tab in the PDFs a big distraction... top tip - go into Acrobat and redact the tab with a white rectangle and 'print with comments'. No more distractions :)

  • The pdfs dont work no more help please!!

  • god bless you !!

  • Wow!! These 2 lessons have helped me so much!! I can't thank you enough, Dave!

10 minutes ago I had no idea how to play a walking bass line, Now I know some theory beind this method as well!!!

  • the exercises on the web site are amazing

  • i LOVE YOU thanks so much for the lesson

  • I love you

    thanks so much!!!

  • This is great! Very well laid out lessons.

  • are you related to doug?

  • You're lessons reallly helped me! keep it up I'm using my bass for GCSE Music :D

  • Dave thanks for this great series, i am having some trouble with the descending arpeggios it is not clear in the pdf. the ascending ones are patterns i can take on but i cant gt the descending patterns.

  • i have a question. is it necessary to play the fifth fret in some of the things? because it seems easier to just play the open string

  • its not necessary, but learning things with the "aid" of open notes can be confusing. with opens you "Stretch" distances you normally can't - say a major sixth. its better to learn things like shapes with fretting, and then using opens later (because certain keys have NO open notes in them, like Bb minor).

  • @RatMidgetProductions : many bass players try to avoid open strings. you can mute and play ghost notes on fretted notes as opposed to open strings. if you are playing any sort of funk style, youll want to stay away from open strings unless you are doing an instant hammer on. of course break the rules!

  • Good

  • turn ur bass up..

  • awesome lessons man nice jazz too!! FUNKONGROOVABILITY, BABY BOPPA!!!!!

  • this is nice. this is good for making up my own bass lines

  • good lesson, try putting up the volume on your bass next time. Peace!

  • usa pa daw waray ako makaintindi..

  • thanks dave1! i owe you!

  • hey dave! awesome videos! the only question i have is im confused on the descending part....does that mean just play the notes in revers order? i just dont understand...if you could clear this up it would be amazing!!

  • Yes -

you just play the notes of the arpeggio in reverse order.

Take a look in the video info and you'll find a link through to my pdfs.

these have all the info you need to make the lesson clearer....

    d

  • how can you tell which notes to play on each chords the only thing i know is root and 5th and octive

  • I'm assuming that you're asking how to construct chords. If that is the case, you need to learn your major scale first. If you already know that, a basic major chord uses the root note, third and fifth notes. A minor chord is the same except that you flatten(lower by one interval, or fret) the third note.

Google will help with learning the major scale.

  • @davemarks the pdfs don't work no more please help!

  • Ok so if my E & D string are hiting the finger board does it need to be tuned again because my bass is tuned but the strings are hitting the finger board causing it to make a different & not to good sound....Please reply back. Thanks, Tori

  • you probably need to adjust your action.

  • Yeah, it sounds like your action is off. The way to alter it depends on the style of guitar that you have, so browse the internet for some tips.

  • damn, his accent is brutal!!! i want an accent like that...

  • I tried going to your website. I got this phishing alert warning.

It would not let me in. I'll try again later. love the lesson's posted here at you tube. thank for sharing. I also watched some of your gig's live. You are a awesome player!!!!! I'm jealous.

  • Is the 1, 3, 5, 7 walk up and down the most common with this style or does it just work best with the song, Autumn Leaves?

  • nice malware, dave.

    good videos though, very helpful

  • someone infected the servers from the web company I use. Massive pain in the arse. They assure me it's all cleared up now...

  • thats awesome that you give lessons for free and actually break down what your doing for people to learn most of the people on here who give lessons just show off playing really fast but you actually go slow so people can learn from you props man if more people were like you the world would have way more musicians

  • Ehy Dave you website is dangerous. When I try to load the site FireFox says me that it may contains dangerous files, download that the user doesn't want. What can I do? What's the problem?

  • Hey Dave,

I'm Dave Dellinger- I always wanted to change my name to Dave Marks when I was an actor and have always been a guitar player. Now playing the bass, and in a band, was looking for a name for the band, I thought Dave Marks Trio- I look it up to see if it's taken and find your site...I've followed your lessans, and while thinking I was a pretty good player - am only getting better...thanks

  • tool

  • i think your site is down!

    great lessons

  • i started at the first one and i feel i progressed in like a week and a half. a jam the other day was awesome!!

  • Jah Bless Your Self for your knowledge give-away! Everybody should do that. Consciousness

  • Indeed - spread the goodness - imagine if everyone embraced that thing that they do well and gave a little of it away to help others. The positive vibes in the world would take a sudden leap upwards - it would be incredible!

  • Hey thanks a lot for ur lessons online. really appreciate your time and dedication. thanks

  • Just a question...Why on the Dm7 did you use a different pattern,( I understand they are the same notes, but in a different position,) and not on the G7 and CM7?

  • Hey man - because I'm going all the way down to that low F note on the 1st fret it's better for me to use open strings - it means I don't have to jump down mid shape. I then moved back up because both the G7 and C Maj7 shapes occur between frets 2 - 5. These are all just options - I could have started on the 5th fret of the A string and then descended D (5th fret) - C (3rd Fret) - open A and used that open string ringing to shift down and get to the low F note. Hope that helps to clarify...

  • Thanks

  • but why do you play the dm7 in an octave lower when the g7 and cm7 are still in the same octave? when i play this in a twelve bar it works but it just feels weird when i'm descending on the dm7 in a lower octave

  • If you try and descend on either the C or G in their original octave I'm pretty sure you'll find you run out of notes (unless you have a 5-string)

  • Yeah Boy! This is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks again.

  • thanks for the free lessons, :D

  • Good stuff!

  • First of great lessons Mark!

Any Idea when your web site will be up again?

  • Who said im listening to Alex Webster?

I like Fusion, jazz, funk, soul etc. ANd trust me i know what this guy is talkbing about and its really boring. Get to work.

  • And why do you use such death metal nickname? :)

  • HEY MAN WHATS UE WITE :P

  • its davemarks(dot)com

  • WHATS UR SITE :S

  • Hey man - I've posted notes for this lesson on my own website - unfortunately I don't have the time free to start sending things out for free to individual email accounts..

  • is ur bass fretless?

  • can u send me the scale on my hotmail sudit_156at hotmail

  • Berlin is all about that stuff...it comes as little surprise that he can rip it up like a monster. Harmony is where it's at... even when you play melody... :-)

  • I like the way you break it down into simple steps. Its amazing how many wannabe bass players ignore chord tones. I know Berlin is a fanatic about this.

    great stuff.

  • Hey y'all -I've just posted an mp3 backing track for you to practice your walking bass ideas along to. It's a simple II V I progression in C Major with a nice slow swing. It will work for all of the lessons I've done so far... It's on the lessons page of my website.
