As kids we had Blue Merles, encouraging them with treats was a doddle. Now I'm older and have got a Border which we've rehomed. He's only a year old but is coming out his shell and settling in nicely. Quite a contrast from the pub he came from. Our problem is that Loki won't take treats. We'v tried doggy chocs and various savouries. Maybe just the fussing he gets is enough? I'm not complaining but without treats, it's making things a tad tricky lol
@750triton I find that small pieces of real meat work best, try different kinds, chicken and liver are favourites with my dogs, if you cook the liver very slowly in the oven that works great, a little cheese might also tempt them. Don't try and train your dog near a meal time and don't leave your dogs food down all the time, make sure you do training at least 3 hours after the dogs last meal. also try toys, if he likes toys then you're onto a winner as both my BCs like toys better than food :)
@zsianz1 Thanks for the reply. We've found a treat he likes while visiting a pet shop on holiday. The assistant , while we chatted, was feeding Loki some cheesy treats. Now our younger daughter is having fun training.
Thanks for the reply! We started doing it on the couch, but I put cushions on either side of me so he was forced to jump right onto my lap. This helped. We moved back to the chair & he started finally getting that he needed to jump. We can get up to 4 pillows under me, but he gets scared because he doesn't like how his feet slip and slide as I grab him when he jumps. The problem is that he's aiming for my legs and no higher, which makes it harder for me to grab him smoothly. Any tips?
I need help! I'm working on training my dog to do this trick based on this video, but he's not getting it. We started on a low box, and worked our way up to chair, but he's not understanding now that he needs to jump onto my lap, rather than climb onto it. He jumps up with his front paws, and then digs his claws into me and climbs up my legs to get all the way up. (It's getting quite painful.) Do you have any tips to give?
@kristen58 does your dog know how to jump onto a box or chair? that might be a good place to start as you can then be above your dog and encourage your dog to jump up. even start off with a sofa (if your dog is allowed on your chairs) and pat it enthusiastically to get your dog up there and only reward if it springs up rather than climbs. you could lay a blanket over the sofa and then when you want your dog to jump onto your lap place the blanket across your knees.
@kristen58 try talking in a high pitched encouraging cute voice and get him all excited when he's across the room from you... my dog leaps on me when i call her in an excited happy tone of voice when she doesn't expect me to... i hope this helps you! :) and then if he does it then praise him and reward with a treat :)
@RocketReviews4u Thanks for your help, he's getting it a lot better. He will jump into my arms when we're in the house now, but he still doesn't seem to understand what I'm asking when we're outside or anywhere else. I'm guessing I probably need to bring the chair outside and go through all the steps so he can start to generalize the trick better rather than just thinking it's a living room thing.
How do you convince your dog to jump if she wont go any farther? Mine keeps trying to crawl all over me but I cant get her to jump into my lap on the first step. :(
well thanks for the advice it worked. I went over the top with praise and treats when close to the chair we worked step by step and now i dont have to be anywhere near the chair and she will jump into my arms thanks for the tutorial will look out for more thanks :)
@zachybaby1 I'm very glad this worked out for you, yep I have lots more on my channel so you should be able to find some others you would like to work through with your dog :) happy training!!
Hey thanks for the awesome trick idea. I have started to teach my beardie this trick. But we have got a problem. i can sit on a very high raised and she will jump into my arms happily. But as soon as i stand up she wont jump. I have tried standing next to the chair and she will occasionly jump and i click that but as soon as i step away from the chair she wont jump. Do u have any advice?
Hey thanks for the awesome trick idea. I have started to teach my beardie to do this and we are having a problem. I sit on a high bar stool and she will fly into my arms but as soon as i stand up she wont jump. I have tried standing half leaning on the chair and she will jump occasionly i click as soon as this happens but as soon as i step away from the chair she wont jump .; Do u have any advice?
@zachybaby1 when she does this occasional jumping when you are leaning then jackpot with the treats, really go for it with the praise and treats this way she will know that this is what you want her to do. try bending your knees so as you are a little lower but leave the chair behind you so as she doesn't think things are changing too much, keep at it and then in time you will be able to take a small step away from the chair. it sounds like you are well on your way to getting this trick :-)
you rock!!!! thanks for making this so easy and clear to learn, I have one jumping right on in the first session the pup is taking a little longer but i think he will get it
Your videos are great and very much appreciated. I have tried some of these tricks with my dogs that I have now, which are hunting dogs. I am getting my first BC in a week. We will definately be doing tricks through your teaching tips. I will be rewatching all of your videos once we start training and I will recomment our progress.
We are now at stage 2, she is jumpting into my arms really well after spending ages going back a step or two before reaching this. I have raised my chair up to nearly standing now stage 3 soon. Yipee!!! x
Hi Sian, thanks for taking the time to reply. We are still getting on well with this trick but sometimes, and she does this on other tricks and her agility training - she just switches off and ignores me! Please can you give some tips as to what to do when she does this as I am finding it very frustrating. It's like she lacks motivation/drive at times and I am not sure what I am doing wrong. Please help!
@321tooty keep training sessions short and often, no more than 10 minutes at a time. make sure you are rewarding with something that your dog loves best (don't forget to use toys as well as food) and do make sure that your dog hasn't had a meal in the last few hours. try to avoid feeding any treats outside of training. keep treats small, pea sized. if your dog has had enough then don't force the point, you won't get anywhere if you do, it can be frustrating but hang in there :-)
Hi Sian, I have just started training this trick and its going well. Thanks for your adivce of the "roll over" its now brilliant, I will try and send you a video of all her tricks soon. Thanks alot for all your time and effort in sharing your techniques with us its sooooooooooo much appriciated, and your teaching is so easy to follow. Love Ruth & Beauty
This is probably the best vid I've seen on getting the "jumping into arms" behaviour. My dog already gets onto my lap, I would never have thought of adding the books onto the chair. DUH!!!! I'm off to train this one - thanks so much
You break it down so easily. I taught my dogs leg weaving within 30 minutes through looking at your leg weaving for two dogs (they're not good enough to do it together yet but definitely surprised me how they picked it up doing it single). Thanks a lot and please keep it up!
Thanks so much for this! I've been wanting to teach my collie mix how to do this but wasn't sure how to go about it. He's a bit on the heavy side (50 lbs) but I think we can manage now!
@watsocialcode I mostly use real meat or very small amounts of cheese if I'm training something new. but whatever I find that they like really, I mix it up a lot so as they don't get bored.
Very clear steps, as usual. So helpful. I think I'll start with my puppy, as well as the 3 year old, as the pup is still at that stage where she loves to jump in the lap and be held. Thanks!
I love how you break the trick down it helps me out so much when i'm teaching it to my austrailian shepherd Rue. She likes to try and do what she wants though. she keeps doing one trick in place of another. what can you suggest?
@Lyhraify it is a common problem to most (if not all) dogs that when they are a little unsure they will start to offer you all the tricks they know! the most important thing is to be consistent, ONLY reward a behaviour if you asked for it (apart from at the beginning of training a trick and then only reward when you are working on that trick) you could check my video on "roll over" which goes over not rewarding when you didn't ask for the behaviour too. hope that helps!
Wow great video, clear instructions I'm going to try this out right now thanks!!!! Check out my 6 month border collie!! Thank you so much for this video!!
tht was sum really helpful advise i havent gt a dog but i am gna get 1 so tht will help thanks so much please keep makign videos i also subscribed coz i thought the video was fantastic x
i love your videos. You and emily are the best dog trainers. How long did it take you?? I wish i could teaqch my dog to do that. But i dont have a dog. Shame. Great video though.
thank you, you are very kind. this didn't take too long to train, one dog will learn faster than the next though because some dogs take to one trick or another better. it took Holly around 4 training sessions of 10 minutes each to be doing this easily. but my other dog is still working on it :-)
great video i'm going to try this one and the double dog weave tomorrow ( don't know if my labradoodle and border collie will both fit through my legs)
Been working on this since the weekend and Daisy has just started jumping into my arms whilst im stood up ! Great training method (as always!) very easy to use thankyou!
that is such wonderful news :-) I'm really glad you found my video a help :-) thank you so much for taking the time to let me know how you're getting on with this trick.
This is the best tutorial for jumping in your arms that Ive seen. I have tried training this to my dog with her jumping over my knee while i catch her and she doesnt like it at all! This really will help a lot, so thank you so much for sharing!!
Great video! Don't do what I did though, I sat in a chair that rolls, which worked until I added the books (well, I used pillows since I don't have that many big books). Lol. I havn't a clue what I was thinking when I trained this!
SWEET ! That was a stellar tutorial! You made it look so simple! hehe! Better than what I did which was lean backwards holding a stuffed animal under my chin- could have gone terribly wrong (didnt tell anyone how I trained it in case they got bit in the neck... ) This way is way more logical and easy!
thanks Em, you know I wouldn't trust Holly if I had a ball under my chin!! haha! she is a bit crazy!! this actually took me a while to train because Holly doesn't like being picked up, so we had to take it super slow. it makes weighing her much easier as she used to freak out when I would try and pick her up and growl and everything!! she seems to think of it as a fun trick now though :-)
Brilliant video Sian. I love the way the books make the teaching of the trick step-by-step so the dog doens't get overwhelmed in any way....I never realised their were so many uses for books! ;)
Sian - You make the best tutorials! I love how you broke this down into easy to understand pieces. And, you tell what to do if it isn't working. You are a natural born teacher. Great job! 5* and a favorite. :-)
There's no problem at all for Kai jumping up, I just need to teach a cue to come up and NOT bite my face! I'll have to teach her that after the freestyle competition!
Good Video, my brother recently got a border collie, its about 7 weeks old, its red(brown) and white with those cool blue eyes. I wanted to get him a Clicker from the pet store and tell him about your channel. What do you use for reward food? and/or whats the best click & reward food as they grow up?
Thank you so so much for making all these videos and tutorials. Wihout them, I would just be lost and confused but thanks to you, my dogs can do cool impressive tricks so another thank you to you it means a lot! You deserve 5 stars for all your videos and a lot of subscribers. ***** =)
Oh we comment because you, Mabel and Holly are fabulous :)
Don't think I'm going to try this one with my 80 lb German Shepherd, but may with my boyfriend's Border Collie! Thanks for breaking the "how to train" concept down into steps and then explaining why you do each step, and possible pitfalls we might encounter!
This is an amazing tutorial Sian. The steps are so simple to follow. :) I don't think Indi will be able to jump high enough into my arms but I'll definitely keep it in mind for future reference. Thank you so much again for making such amazing videos!
These are great tricks. One thing i have noticed is that there are an exceptionally large number of trainers with Border collies and other types of herding dogs. Any dog trainers out there training dogs with a high prey drive? I would like to see some of the frustrations of training dogs that don't have a strong natural pack instinct or aptitude for verbal commands.
tha's a really good idea...i was just thinking of how to train my dog to do that yesterday.....now i have something to go off of......thank you sooo much for making this video!!!!
Thank you for this Sian, it really helps to see the trick broken down. I'm definitely going to give this a go with Mi. And you're right, Holly really does seem to quite enjoy this now!
i love your black and white border collie sh s soooooo beautyfull the blue is too cute how can i teach my dog to catch a frisbee in jumping on my back ,,
Great as always! I am going to try this with Rio the Sheltie first, Keen weighs too much! LOL You are such a great teacher, you always explain things well, and I enjoy your videos so much.
That was a really awesome tutorial, Sian!! I'm thinking Zander might be too big for me to try this, sadly. However.. I love the way you edited this video together and the instructions are easy to follow. Great job, Sian! Such a cute trick. :)
I am a little busy with study at the moment but if I get a moment I will def make you a video on this. send me a youtube message telling me where you are getting stuck.
It's probubly a better trick for dogs who are small, or have light frames. Just a thought. Or at least ones who are breeds who are made for jumping and running around, like Mable and Holly. I guess you can do it with other dogs too, but It seems like it would be hard.
oh yes, you are right, a dog that is too small or too big/heavy will not do so well with this one, different dogs are good at different tricks. you make a really very good point there, I must remember to include that kind of information in future videos :-)
Great video!! I love the editing on this one, just perfect. Man, you really make good use of those books, don't you? With the handstand and rear leg lifts and now this... :)
oh haha, yes I love those books, don't forget backwards circles, I used them there too!! haha! I need some new training props!!! haha! thank you for your awesome comment :-)
Oh thank you so much for your lovely comment :-) I say "spring up" and I hold my arms to the side I want her to jump from and then open them when I want her to jump, if I don't mind which side I just open my arms with a bit of a flourish!
wow u make it look so easy i have just one questoin!!! do you dogs ever jump onto your laps without u asking like onto a visitors lap coz there on that chair??? im not sure i would want that as funny as that would be :)
oh haha, that would be a bit embarrassing!! no it has not happened as yet, the idea is that once your dog is doing this on cue then you would only reward if you have actually given the cue. I did however once hold my arms open (not thinking) when she was near and had a surprise in my arms a second later! haha! don't use the chair where you would normally have the chair, so if the chair is in the kitchen then take it into another room to train this, that should help :-)
oh, hehe yes! I should have put a 'you will need:' section on this and listed 1 collie and a bunch of treats! haha! thanks so much for your comment, I must head over to your channel and see what you have been up to lately :-)
Great tutorial! I had a lot of trouble training this to Ernie and it was just trial and error with him until we found a method that clicked. Holly is so great at jumping into your arms! I might try this method with my Springer Indi, although I'm scared he's going to knock me over!
Great video, Sian! I've been teaching this to Jedi for a little while but I'm so tall I don't know that he's physically going to be able to jump high enough! haha!! He is consistently jumping into my lap on a chair though... I might just have to settle with that!
Ahsoka on the other hand SHOULD be able to... I might give it a go with her!
I have a 75 pound dog who is sometimes uncomfortable with getting close to me. He does do stuff like disc (he won a few medals) and a few tricks. however sometimes he growls at me if I lean over him to hug, etc. Would this be a good trick to teach if I want him to get more comfortable with me being close?
One of my dogs is not too keen on being close (the dog in this video) I trained slow and ONLY rewarded when she was doing what I asked AND staying calm, I did not continue to train if I saw any sign of her starting to get excited/stressed so it took a bit more time than training a dog that doesn't mind being picked up, as she would not tolerate being picked up before I trained this. not only does she like this trick now but it has improved her trust with being close. just take it very slow!
Beautiful job Holly & Sian! Now if I could only teach this to Bandit. He wants no part of jumping up on me. However, I will try again! Thanks for the tutorial. 5*s & Fav.
Easily subscribed :) Amazing ;)

i love your videos. You and emily are the best dog trainers. How long did it take you?? I wish i could teaqch my dog to do that. But i dont have a dog. Shame. Great video though.
nataliawasilewska97 2 years ago
thank you, you are very kind. this didn't take too long to train, one dog will learn faster than the next though because some dogs take to one trick or another better. it took Holly around 4 training sessions of 10 minutes each to be doing this easily. but my other dog is still working on it :-)

Great video! Don't do what I did though, I sat in a chair that rolls, which worked until I added the books (well, I used pillows since I don't have that many big books). Lol. I havn't a clue what I was thinking when I trained this!

SWEET ! That was a stellar tutorial! You made it look so simple! hehe! Better than what I did which was lean backwards holding a stuffed animal under my chin- could have gone terribly wrong (didnt tell anyone how I trained it in case they got bit in the neck... ) This way is way more logical and easy!
kikopup 2 years ago
thanks Em, you know I wouldn't trust Holly if I had a ball under my chin!! haha! she is a bit crazy!! this actually took me a while to train because Holly doesn't like being picked up, so we had to take it super slow. it makes weighing her much easier as she used to freak out when I would try and pick her up and growl and everything!! she seems to think of it as a fun trick now though :-)

WOW love it!!!! its going to help me lots when i train this!!! thanks for making it :D

Brilliant video Sian. I love the way the books make the teaching of the trick step-by-step so the dog doens't get overwhelmed in any way....I never realised their were so many uses for books! ;)

These are great tricks. One thing i have noticed is that there are an exceptionally large number of trainers with Border collies and other types of herding dogs. Any dog trainers out there training dogs with a high prey drive? I would like to see some of the frustrations of training dogs that don't have a strong natural pack instinct or aptitude for verbal commands.

I am a little busy with study at the moment but if I get a moment I will def make you a video on this. send me a youtube message telling me where you are getting stuck.
zsianz1 2 years ago
It's probubly a better trick for dogs who are small, or have light frames. Just a thought. Or at least ones who are breeds who are made for jumping and running around, like Mable and Holly. I guess you can do it with other dogs too, but It seems like it would be hard.
kateribethrose 2 years ago
oh yes, you are right, a dog that is too small or too big/heavy will not do so well with this one, different dogs are good at different tricks. you make a really very good point there, I must remember to include that kind of information in future videos :-)
zsianz1 2 years ago
Great video!! I love the editing on this one, just perfect. Man, you really make good use of those books, don't you? With the handstand and rear leg lifts and now this... :)

What cue (verbal and physical) do you use to ask your dogs to leap into your arms?
Adipatus 2 years ago
Oh thank you so much for your lovely comment :-) I say "spring up" and I hold my arms to the side I want her to jump from and then open them when I want her to jump, if I don't mind which side I just open my arms with a bit of a flourish!

Splitting a trick down is always a bit, well...tricky. Thank you so much for helping me get into the right frame of mind for this and other tricks.
zencherry67 2 years ago
wow u make it look so easy i have just one questoin!!! do you dogs ever jump onto your laps without u asking like onto a visitors lap coz there on that chair??? im not sure i would want that as funny as that would be :)
mollybrandybillly 2 years ago
oh haha, that would be a bit embarrassing!! no it has not happened as yet, the idea is that once your dog is doing this on cue then you would only reward if you have actually given the cue. I did however once hold my arms open (not thinking) when she was near and had a surprise in my arms a second later! haha! don't use the chair where you would normally have the chair, so if the chair is in the kitchen then take it into another room to train this, that should help :-)

Great tutorial! I had a lot of trouble training this to Ernie and it was just trial and error with him until we found a method that clicked. Holly is so great at jumping into your arms! I might try this method with my Springer Indi, although I'm scared he's going to knock me over!
mikadogluva 2 years ago
Great video, Sian! I've been teaching this to Jedi for a little while but I'm so tall I don't know that he's physically going to be able to jump high enough! haha!! He is consistently jumping into my lap on a chair though... I might just have to settle with that!
Ahsoka on the other hand SHOULD be able to... I might give it a go with her!

oh, haha you are lucky, I'm so short I nearly get knocked over!! hehe!

Great stuff!
Koreagrrl 2 years ago
One of my dogs is not too keen on being close (the dog in this video) I trained slow and ONLY rewarded when she was doing what I asked AND staying calm, I did not continue to train if I saw any sign of her starting to get excited/stressed so it took a bit more time than training a dog that doesn't mind being picked up, as she would not tolerate being picked up before I trained this. not only does she like this trick now but it has improved her trust with being close. just take it very slow!
