I used a blonde to black hair dye to lighten my hair and it turned blonde/orange at the roots, dark brown past the ears... if I use a clarifying shampoo to lighten up my hair should I still use a hair stripper to get the darker parts or will the hair catch the color once I dye it?

The reason hair does not dye lighter when it is dark is because colour does NOT lift colour. A lot of people dont understand this. (if you put a dark colour ontop of a light colour as you all probs know dyeing hair darker is easy and works!) but a colour cannot LIFT / lighten another colour pigment. Imagine it as trying to put white paint onto a black wall, it aint gonna work! so you will only get lighter hair by bleaching or stripping :) x

@SerenityShootingStar since your hair is all natural, the dye will pick up better on your hair. you wouldnt need to strip your hair if you're just trying to achieve a light brown shade; all you would need is a light or medium ash blonde hair dye. hope this helps!

So, I have that problem where the bottom half didn't color well. Also, instead of a light brown, I got a kind of red...on the top half closer to the roots. So, now I want to try a whole new color. My question is, if I strip my hair like you said, is it a good idea to strip it to the roots, or close to the roots? After I strip my hair of it's color, that's when I use the new color, right?

Purple shampoo has violet pigments in it to cancel out yellow tones. If you have orange hair, the purple plus orange, you will be left with red on the hair. If you use an ash, or blue to tone that hair, you will get neutral or brown. Plus purple shampoos generally are for levels 9 and up so the pigment probably wouldn't show on your hair anyway.

Dying black hair is the worst! So save your the headache and bleach your hair a few times first (be careful) then dye it light ASH brown. Or go to the salon. Doing anything else will either get you orange brassy hair color or light roots and dark everywhere else, a mess.

@aznstiffy since your hair is all natural, you shouldnt have too much trouble with having the hair dye show up. sallys beauty supply has hair swatches of all their dyes so i suggest you go there and check it out. as for the developer, i say stick to a 30; 20 developer wouldnt give you enough lift. there's this medium ash brown shade that ive used before by the same brand WELLA that you might like. hope that helps! =)

@AdeleR0 strip the ends of your hair that is dark brown, wash it out, then dye it with the light brown. oh and for the brassiness, try buying a shampoo or hair treatment for "blondes".; i use john frieda's color renew. hope that helps!

@marcoly25 strip the darker parts of your hair. then dye it over with the color you want over it; the color will be more likely to pick up the new color shade.

nice video. i usually do the ends first.. then move up because the color gets on root quickly than the ends and the roots may look lighter than the rest of the hair color.
