I have observed several uploads of this group looking for basic information and I certainly got it here, not only the information provided by kantelar (thank you ) but the comments are wonderful also, like a group effort to educate those like myself who are fascinated by this strange-sounding language and this is the BEST song! makes me want to go run through the woods....

When Sanna was with that other lady (shoot, I forget her name), it was ok, and I love Sanna's voice in and of itself, but there's something so amazing and "right" about her and Anita singing together. Karelia Visa is definitely, by far, my favourite album of theirs, because of the vocals <3

They sing in Finnsh. There are lots of Finnish speakers with Swedish citizenship, both traditionally (in Norrbotten) and due to immigration no reason to be confused by that. Also Norrlåtarna sing primarily in Finnsh though all are Swedes in the sense that their ancestry is from the territory of Sweden.

@lauoks Everything you say is of course right. But just to clarify, in this specific case the singers are actually from Finland, so they happen not to be Finnish speaking Swedes. Not that it would matter much, one way or another.

Can anyone provide context for (or explanation of ) "place the brass to the brass bodies" ? Is this a reference to something in Finnish folklore?

@ralphyboy25 Brass body can simply be coming from the colour of a summer tanned body.

But the ancient Finns had a story of making a woman from gold, in Kalevala. So, don't know if there was a story moving around about a brass maiden as well. And brass was so important before the coming of iron to the industry of tools that it was valued long till iron age, and the stories remaining in Kalevala. There are lots of metaphores that are using brass in the wordings, 'lyrics'.

@timomastosalo Thank you for the background. A woman from gold, or simply suntanned bodies. Both interesting things to ponder. I realize that it can be difficult to decipher metaphoric references from ancient tales within one's own culture, and even harder for us to translate them to other languages.

Understanding the historical and/or cultural background behind musical lyric is a bit of a hobby for me. Thanks again for your help.

@ralphyboy25 You're welcome. I studied Finnish as my major, + a load of linguistics there besides. About the English roots it's interesting to read Anglo-saxon origin, glimpse a bit welsh or some other celtic languages + french - and to look at saucer & Shakespeare, then some 19th & early 20th century authors to notice something about the language change.

I study more texts, but I understand your musical languages hobby, cause it's close the same.

@timomastosalo More about the brass lady: Check Gjallarhorn - Suvetar on the vid feed. It means 'Summer lady', Suvi being summer originally in the western dialects + tar/tär being a feminine ending, much like -ess in English, so 'Summeress' might be a 'cool' translation.

The song is an old fertility rite to the field, or spirits of the field, though I'm not much into kinda shamanistic things, since being found by God, amazingly enough. But of course as a Finnish linguistic I like ye olde tong

The band was formed 1987 by 3 swedish musicians. 1991 they teamed up with 2 finish singers and became partly a finish band.

Today the band only consist of swedish musicians.

All the lyrics are in finnish (or sami?)
