They may abandon the same reason kids abandon other things as they grow up, its called growing up and finding other interests. there is nothing wrong with that. I have seen the stereotypical fanatical parent who yells at their kid etc but the vast majority of the kids are simply having fun.

I honestly think it would be more damaging to this girl to tell her that because she's female she is unable to compete. I'm guessing that there weren't enough (if any) little girls at the tournament for her to have a real bracket or competition. So what would be better? You don't understand the sport if you did you would know that grappling is a lot more flexibility than it is strength so in all honesty at this age the girl would have the advantage. Master Helio Gracie rest his soul was 120 pounds and he meant for his art to be where the weak individual can defeat the strong individual. Girls grappling boys is perfect for the sport because that is what the sport is all about.

At this age their is no ego how ever as the kids get older the pattern of male female does develope... having young boy grapple young girls is okay to a point then it is better to have females battle females and males battle males... as they become adults then all bets are off as egos dont come into play... by that time the strength defereance between the sex is so appearant most females can only truely compete with other females... but at five and six years of age it shouldn't matter.
