  • I think People should consider Islam as the Quran is still recited in its original language

  • why are people giving the quran second look? has it been changed? ofcourse not, see for yourself !

  • This was awsome, thanks! Even though I studied christianity at university for 18 months, this perhaps gave me a deeper insight in many parts of NT than my professors did. Please accept my subscription...

  • Thanks

  • After listening to the whole thing and believe me he is not the first guy iv heard with these mistakes, and changes made to the bible I can firmly say that its sad that people actually can believe the bible as the word of god. but don't lose hope people cuz god is great and if you really seek the truth reasearch other scriptures and u will see what i mean :)

  • I am a Muslim, i owe all non Muslims a message of truth:

there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and Mohammad is his last prophet and messenger and Jesus is Allah's prophet, his messenger, his word to the virgin Mariam an a spirit from the almighty Allah, may peace, blessings and prayers be on all of them.

If the bible is proven not to be Divine, then it's your obligation to look else where about the true message of the Messiah son of Mariam, search in the holy Quran, you will be guided.

  • Very cool. Ehrman is a pretty good speaker.

  • I would like to know why, according to him, Jesus didn't speak Greek at all since he draws his conclusion that the conversation could not have happenned.

  • It's assumed, for the same reason it's assumed that modern day Americans don't speak Finnish.

  • Even IF Jesus did, you still have to get Nicodemus to speak Greek too: it was a two-way conversation.

  • Jesus wasn't the only person in the conversation. He is speaking with Nicodemus, a Pharisee. Pharisees rejected Greek culture and were not likely to be speaking Greek, especially with someone like Jesus to whom Greek was a minor language at best (if he spoke it at all).

  • a reply such as that proves your reality is under threat.

  • He didn't draw that conclusion from his earlier assumption, that jesus probably didn't speak greek. It's actually pure logic: Both Nikodemus and Jesus were jews and most probably spoke aramaic as everyday language and hebrew as scholarly language. Why would they converse in greek, which would be a foreign language for both? Nikodemus was a Pharisee; the Pharisees were a radical anti-Hellenistic movement among the jewish population. He most certainly would have refused to speak greek...

  • I think that conclusion is based on two things. First of all, Jesus was a Jew with no special education. There is no reason that he should have been able to speak Greek. Secondly, the people he was speaking to were mostly Jews, who wouldn't have understood him if he was speaking Greek. If you want, I guess you could say that he was miraclulously speaking in a foreign tongue, but that the author didn't think it was worth mentioning.

  • @stevecuddles he spoke aramaic

  • Fascinating! Leaves me wanting more. Thanks for uploading!

  • One of the Qur'ans most important attributes is that it reached us in the very same form in which it was revealed to our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). In: [We have sent down the Reminder, and We will preserve it.] (Al-Hijr 15: 9), Allah promised to protect it.

  • where was this at?

  • son of man is same as man in aramaic?? how can they reporoduce aramaic to greek then and all the passages of jesus saying son of man has a possible alternative of just man?

also jesus conversation with nichademus could possibly be made up as they were not conversing in greek rather aramaic!!

  • i thought someone would ask him about the Quran, but great lecture anyway. I learnt so much about the bible that I didnt no before.

  • He's a NT scholar. Why would he mention the Quran?

  • Very enjoyable lecture . Thank you for posting this !

  • What's wrong with just being a deist? After all, no one can ever say that Jesus came to bring Christianity; the 'christos' is a Greek concept of human-divinity, whereas a messiah was someone/anyone appointed by God for a specific representative role. If Jesus wasn't divine, then orthodox Christianity falls but Jesus words remain valid. I don't see a problem with that.

  • salaam

The idea of oral tradition of Isa (as) messege or Injeel was probabaly how the book was given to Isa (as) by Allah/God but as time went on and Greek beacame the order of the day.....something propbabaly happend as some of the Greek words cannot be retranslated back to araimic which is a sister language of Hebrew and arabic.

    peace.

  • lovely lecture indeed this lecture finishes church dogma and so called christianity

  • Poor Christianity.. I feel sad that Christians leave Christianity to atheism. They totally lost faith to God, maybe they should look at Islam in deep either before being atheist.

  • That was just great and simple.

I think he just opened my eyes onto somthing new.

Great work and I hope to see more

  • Quran 2:79

" Then woe to those who write the Book with their own hands, and then say:"This is from Alla(God)," to traffic with it for miserable price!- Woe to them for what their hands do write, and for the gain they make thereby."

  • it angers me that my jesus christ must have faced so many problems and this is how they returned the favour!!!

    Muslim Here!!!

  • Wow ! I can't believe I've watched all 10 parts. This guy is very talented and he made it so simple to understand.

    Excellent video.

  • A brilliant and scholarly lecture.

  • What I like about his approach is that it's theologically neutral. He isn't telling anyone to either "believe" or "not believe" in the Bible as a sacred text.

If he does take a position regarding the Gospels, it's that each Gospel has its own specific story to tell, and that if you mash them up to make them into a single narrative, incorporating elements from each, you've essentially created a new Gospel.

He notes how disinterested too many theologians are in Biblical scholarship.

  • is Bart Ehrman a muslim?

  • No, he is ex-christian. He is agnostic now.

  • is there any one who has done a detailed search on Qur'an?

  • Mashaallah very nice i have seen all 10 parts and it prove that Bible is not the word of god and its not perfect and for a person who is fallowing it its enough to open his eyes Great work keep it up 5 stars

  • i'd love to see him examine the quran!

  • MAN!

One of the best lectures I've seen

  • ATTENTION:

Please Watch All the 10 Parts of the above Video.

  • good stuff....i would have liked someone to have asked a question about how the worldview of the bible's framers and those detailed in the bible differs from today's worldview. for example, sickness was thought to be punishment from God for some trespass against His law, but today, we know that sickness is naturally caused by viruses and bacteria...therefore scripture must be interpreted in light of the ancient times.

  • I'm curious as to what Bart bases this claim that Jesus did not speak Greek. Several times in the Gospels Jesus conversed with people who spoke Greek as their native Language (Centurion, and Pontius Pilate). All of the correspondence from the first century we have access to is written in Greek. Greek was a universal language. Also, the NT specifically points out certain phrases in Aramaic, when it is difficult to translate that phrase in Greek.

  • Sorry to say you know nothing about the timeline of Bible.

Jesus's language was Aramaic. Bible translations were as following:

    Hebrew->Greek->English.

Old Testament was in Hebrew. New Testament was in Greek later on, After that they were translated to English (English is not a very old language).

  • You should do further study on the hellenistic influence on the Galilee region (particularly NT Wright, Ray Vanderlaan, and Daniel Wallace). Jesus lived 2 miles from sepphoris which had a huge greek population, and Jesus, as a stone mason (carpenter) would have to interact with them to conduct business. Your oversimplistic Bible translations "as follows" betrays your complete lack of knowledge about this.

  • You missed a step.

    For the New Testament:

    Greek -> Latin -> English

  • thanks

  • The person in the above video is not some street rat, nor is he a layman. He is a professor who spent his life in studying history of Christianity and Bible, and he is not only a professor but the head of department of religious studies at University of North Carolina.

  • Erhman is a leading TEXTUAL Critic, NOT a historian or theologian (those are distinct disciplines) There are many scholars of equal or higher reputation that affirm the hellenistic influence on Galilee (FF BRuce).2 of Jesus' disciples had Greek names, & Hebrew wasn't even the common language of Jesus' time, but was only for the rabbinic subculture. So, I'm sorry, but you don't know what you're talking about.

  • I must say, this has to be one of the most in depth lecture on the history of the Bible I've ever seen. JazakAllah khair for sharing this.
