Indeed many of us aren't able to speak good English, we should remember that ris low REPRESENTS Singapore. If we were to send someone that has a bad standard of English (or rather, inarticulate), that would definitely give the rest of the world an impression of the standard of English in Singapore.

I second ur opinion. Perhaps, it's too early for her to contest for Miss Universe at the moment. Her thoughts are rather "immature" in my opinion. However, I couldn't blame her when more than half of the remarks in the comment sections of vids, that were dedicated to mock & ridicule her, were as sophomoric, if not more senseless than her articulation. No instructions in school are given whatsoever to correct that ungodly Singaporean accent. Teachers only care that we speak the words. Outside of English class, we mix like four different languages up when we converse, and whoever exercises perfect spoken English will usually be classified under "high and mighty holier than thou douche", so not many do it. Is it then surprising that everyone speaks like that?
Well I'm not saying that Ris Low's spoken English is anywhere near good. But I've noticed that in other videos interviewing Singaporeans is that even people who have good pronunciation and grammar are criticized for their accent. So perhaps that is something we should work on.

Well, I'm not a fan of events such as beauty contest or Miss Universe. However, I presume that I can partially answer ur 1st qns. Yes, S'pore is multi-racial, but according to the census data, 74% of the population are Chinese. Thus, statistically speaking, a Chinese is more likely to be selected for Miss Universe than another non-Chinese. Nonetheless, I do agree that there r some non-Chinese candidates worthy of the crown. I'm also impressed with Sonia's (a non-Chinese) performance in the Q&A.

@KaydenKolldy Just in case you don't know, Singapore population comprises mostly of Chinese people, and in Chinese language, there's the word 'la' which people would put it behind their sentence in order to complete it. Some people who speak Chinese at home might be used to it, thus they would add 'la' to all of their sentences. Singaporeans CAN actually speak English, some young children can speak proper English as well as a foreign adult (not adults in other asian countries).

Kay my spoken English is no better, but I need to say something.
No instructions in school are given whatsoever to correct that ungodly Singaporean accent. Teachers only care that we speak the words. Outside of English class, we mix like four different languages up when we converse, and whoever exercises perfect spoken English will usually be classified under "high and mighty holier than thou douche", so not many do it. Is it then surprising that everyone speaks like that?

Well I'm not saying that Ris Low's spoken English is anywhere near good. But I've noticed that in other videos interviewing Singaporeans is that even people who have good pronunciation and grammar are criticized for their accent. So perhaps that is something we should work on.

Well, I'm not a fan of events such as beauty contest or Miss Universe. However, I presume that I can partially answer ur 1st qns. Yes, S'pore is multi-racial, but according to the census data, 74% of the population are Chinese. Thus, statistically speaking, a Chinese is more likely to be selected for Miss Universe than another non-Chinese. Nonetheless, I do agree that there r some non-Chinese candidates worthy of the crown. I'm also impressed with Sonia's (a non-Chinese) performance in the Q&A.

Everyone has all four skin colours in them, it's just that people in different continents have different amount of those melanin as those places that gets more of the UV rays from the sun would be at a higher risk of getting skin cancer, so that's what the body does to prevent it. @KaydenKolldy Just in case you don't know, Singapore population comprises mostly of Chinese people, and in Chinese language, there's the word 'la' which people would put it behind their sentence in order to complete it. Some people who speak Chinese at home might be used to it, thus they would add 'la' to all of their sentences. Singaporeans CAN actually speak English, some young children can speak proper English as well as a foreign adult (not adults in other asian countries).

1) Do u actually mean "embarrass"? Judging by the insults going ard, I doubt S'porean feel ashamed. Most enjoy bashing their own ppl for others like "KaydenKolldy" to laugh at them.
2) Pls give an example of a "good/pleasant" accent.
3) It's a beauty contest, not a linguist test. I agree, that's y I don't know what's the big fuss abt. She couldn't rep. SG because of her theft offence, but S'porean seems "addicted" mocking at her pronunciation. Btw, u shld improve on ur spelling.

1) She deserved what? Probation for her theft? Of course. But not insults from ppl whom she didn't offend. There's a fundamental diff. between insults & criticism. The problem is ppl were insulting her w/o any justified reasons.
2) I've nv mentioned that she shld rep. SG, it's not up to me to decide.
