I have listened to this about a million time! I love how he split the sounds for this into eight different parts, and how perfect the sound with one another. This is amazing:)
oo snao.. i was expecting the final chord to be a major one.. but one of the higher parts sharped there note.. FREGGIN AWSOME!! i so was not expecting that.. but i loved it!
Do you have or can make sheet music and/or audio tracks for these parts? I'd like to look at the music for this and possibly sing it with some friends. Thanks :)
@cshewel This is a Multi-track. It's not supposed to be a "babershop". It's two keys tied together so you don't have the clear parts sounding. This is more like playing a chord with your voice.
Tip - Move the pop filter a few inches away from the mic. They are designed to slow air flow to remove pops....not stop it on the spot! Putting it that close won't stop plosives nearly as good as placing it far away from the mic.
What's wrong with parallel 5th when he's obviously not using traditional harmony? Maybe he just wanted to add colour to the music, i mean, Debussy did it and yet we enjoy his music.... i'm sure Debussy must have had tons of music lessons. The parallels aren't that bad if u can find the way to make them sound good. The problem is there aren't that many ways that people known of to make them sound good, so the rule comes in, not to solve the problem but to prevent it.
I liked this very much - I like it so much that I jotted it down as a dictation to see what you had done. Sure there are covered and parallel fifths, but my favourite Rachmaninoff prelude (C# minor opus three no. 2) is full of them too! At any rate, some of these fifths are not so objectionable. And I love the parallel fifths section of Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini - variation 22. In music school we studied the organum and that was even wilder.
having parallel fifths was not the way to go in classic counterpart music, since it sounded bad and lame. However, when all four voices of the piece are sang in fifths below I dont think the same really applies. Just listen, its definitely intersesting.
Parallel fifths weren't just disallowed for no reason.
I think you're all reacting just a little too strongly to businee. Come on guys, we've seen this before. Some poor outsider from the generic music world who took freshman music theory before dropping out, stumbles upon a video in our world of barbershop, and posts some stupid idiotic garbage that makes everyone roll their eyes. Like that one dude who was trolling the OC times video saying the "Tenor 2 man was flat" (Sean) and the "Bass 2 man was too loud" (Cory). Forgive them, they know not.
That was so awesome! I want to meet you! If I ask nicely, would you ride all the way to Brason, MO, with me and listen to TV shows on car speakers without a picture? I promise to fart, dip, eat a lot of cashews, and subject you to rancid lyrics in Eminem collabs!!!

Hate to be a downer but musically if you are trying to purposly do paralel 5ths you are completly in the wrong. I dont know how many writing classes you have had or even music theory for that matter but in order to have that pure sound all barbershop has you need to not have parellel 5ths or 8va's, octaves in plain english, just a sugestion.
@virtualbeck I've had 2 years of music theory (required for music majors), and the rules say "no parallel 5ths or octives." But as my music theory instructor told us at the end of the year, "rules were made to be broken." Some people just can't get away from traditional music theory. It's as if the music theory book is the bible. They forget it's music THEORY. You have to ignore these types of people. They are too into thier book to hear the beauty that comes from breaking these "rules."
Yeah, don't listen to him. The theory behind music is to help it sound good. This sounds just fine without following elementary theory rules, so it's fine to me. This is considered more as a bitonal chorale and is reminiscent of more modern 20th century writing, which IS studied in higher level compositional courses. The guy that made this comment is probably just pretending like he's a master because he passed his AP Music Theory exam.
@busineee music theory teaches you that its not the best thing to have parallel fifths... to say that he is "completely wrong" is just ignorant. there is no such thing as completely wrong... so the next time you try to school someone... make sure you have your facts straight, just a suggestion.
@busineee No that's the truth. This sounded cool to me but like 99.99% of the time parallel fifths are a terrible idea. I don't know everything, but I do know that.
@busineee Hey, troll, I hate to be a downer, but some of the best musicians in the world have never had writing classes or even music theory for that matter. Because you have already displayed your epic propencity for being a self righteous asshole who comes in here using special words, I am going to show you my capacity for the ultimate in rage flaming and ask you simply this. If you are so awesome with music, where are your videos? Evidently this guy must be better than you. Jealous?
@busineee Oh, and I must add for the sake of any retaliatory remarks on your part. I do music. I make music, and I listen to it. I don't like people very much so you won't see videos. I have a massive anger management problem. I am a soldier by profession so please don't humiliate yourself by trying to bash my musical education as I obviously have none. But I do have ears and they are good enough to tune a piano, of which I own two. Virtuabeck, its sounds great. I'll look forward to seeing more.
@busineee actually he's not doing barbershop here. putting the two different tags in parallel fifths makes it vocal jazz. notice how it's major9 chord at the end? and how every single chord is a jazz chord? that makes it jazz. and also look at the tag for scarborough fair. it's mostly parallel fifths.
@busineee Actually, the barbershop style does allow parallel fifths. The pure sound comes from Justly tuned intervals (harmonic), which has nothing to do with parallel motion (melodic intervals), and even the resultant harmonies in virtualbeck's experiment (mostly maj 9 chords) are tuned justly. Virtualbeck was clearly not trying to emulate the barbershop style, because he has eight parts.
@busineee - don't like it? Don't play it. I had lots of music theory by the time I got my degree, and sure, traditional music theory says no parallel fifths, but it's not your video, and I for one think it sounds great.
Jayson is correct. Try laying on your back and breathing in to sing. This is the correct use of your diaphragm. Remember, breathe with your belly, not your chest. =)
@jakedaznake2 No it did not. Barbershop chords usually do not. This chord was a parrellell fifths chord that had one major chord on top of another one that was one fifth lower ( or higher) and made the minorish sound.
ah ok, thnx for clearing that up, im studying music myself and im still trying to identify cords myself, (well trying anyways XD) but really, thank you for clearing that up

This is less singing in parallel fifths, and more singing polytonal music. The two keys just happen to be a perfect fifth apart :) Which sounds great.
I would be very curious to hear it sung in keys apart say, perfect fourths? Or minor sixths even.
