Heh, well at least it's a mechanism- so unlike a software patent, he can't patent the idea of a gyroplane that's convertable and roadworthy, just his particular assembly of it.

@JBattaile From what I've read on various gyroplane sites and videos, this is because the FAA requirements to license a kit plane are MUCH more lax, provided you build at least 51% yourself. It's actually doing the customer a favor. (and there are kits out there that cost as much as $60k, engine/blades not included. They typically include a nice windproof enclosure)

it can, same as helicopter. The effect is called autorotation -- when the gyro falls the main rotor is rotated by the airflow and slows down the descent incredibly. Safe landing with engine off is a part of routine license training.

Actually the gyroplane or autogyro was invented a few years after the plane, They were a very common sight for many large cities in the 20's-30's. NY used them for postage, or atleast tried to.
