Posted this somewhere else--Being a "PRODUCER", I understand that most producers are part engineers and songwriters. I believe that someone is still titled as a producer and not just a beat-maker, if he leaves the engineer to do his own job. During the days of "MOTOWN" a lot of producers didn't even make the music, they left that part up to the "MUSICIANS". Great music is great music,no matter the style of choice.
I fully agree wit u mayn. as a matter of fact im strugglin with this problem myself.
people be askin me when you gonna put you beats on the internet
then I respond im not ready yet cuz I want the quality on its best level possible, but I dont know the process or tricks to do so yet. anyway my dream is to become a producer and not just a beatmaker so Ima be fully on my grind. good speaking at the video son keep up the good work.
did you record this vocal over the music or did you add the music after cause if you have this video without the music i will make a tutorial inside a tune just for shits and giggles
Your not talkin about a producer. That's an engineer. A producer gives input to the artist and molds the song before and after the artist got on them.
hold up.....a producer makes tracks, mixes, but they are also in the studio with the artist! you missed that part! its not just about mixing...you gotta be able to make a wack artist sound hot! Sound quality is not everything!!! I'll tell you why.....because not everyone has an engineer's ear...that is the purpose of an engineer....producers are more artistic (and they should be) than anything else!
yo, thats whats up, respect, did you go to school for audio engineering, if not where did you learn. i think im pretty dope when it comes to beatmakin, would you have any tips for mastering in Reason.
i think some of what you say make sense, but i don't think you are to say, what the diffrence is between those two, and you said timba was ignorant?, You are clearly a rookie yourself
dude you forgot to say also a producer gets the artist and has the idea of the song already in mind for the artist, there is atleast a hook established with the song, a producer is deeper than what u just said homie...
Yo Imma FATHER!! lol. Das da realest talk I've heard. Da analogy is so on point! I'm a fan of yaw music while u sittin dere showin otha cats love, give yaself some credit. Yaw young bucks r dope! I make music maself... not beats... music, n I must say, u brothas have set the BAR for maself as well as other up and comers!
I get what you are trying to say. But a Producer does way more than eq and spice beats. A true music producer is hired by a record company and is in charge of the song; including and not limited to booking the studio, input on songwriting, keeping the artist on track, and making sure the song if finished from the recording process all the way down to the mastering process. This is a good point that should be brought up though, because too many people call themselves producers w/out any credits.
Reverb does not make it feel like it's front of you, reverberation in it's natural habitat are soundwaves bouncing from your walls into your ears, reverberation modules on computers try to copy that.
Compression makes it feel it's BANG in your face, without fucking up the mix.
My 2cents is the difference with a producer vs. beatmaker is that producers respect & honor their work and don't just give their work to anybody. A beatmaker will sell beats online for $10.00. A producer makes his own style, music & isn't afraid of new ideas & concepts. A beatmaker sounds like everyone else. A producer has "soul" a beatmaker has 'clonning" skills... Word up! Orlando, Fl
Hey, wassup man. I'm from the uk. I write beats myself and perform. I'd luv to get ya views on them. Is there any way that i can get them to you? maybe email? holla back! Bless! Clay
For example, a lead vocalist can be made to sound in front of the stage by mixing her with only a little reverb, while a cello can be made to sound at the far back of the stage by mixing it with much more reverb.
Reverb- creates a sense of depth in your mix, of front to back space. The more reverb a signal is blended with, the further back in the mix it will sound. Alternately, the less reverb a signal is blended with the closer it will sound to the listener. By using a channels send to add different amounts of reverb to a performance you can bring an instrument forward, or push it to the back of your virtual sound stage.
and its nothing wrong with being a beat maker. shit ima beat maker! im not in the studio with my favorite artist. i make a track send it to them and if they like it they buy it and use it. trust me... im not heavy in the game yet but im trying. i do have placements. they are on mixtapes but they are placements.
dude your still a beat maker... i dont wanna sond like a hater but to be short you just decribed the job of the engineer. and for the record the diffrence between a beat maker and a producer is just what they say they are. a beat maker just makes a beat and moves on. and a producer is someone who knows what they want on the record. and is involved in the artist and how they sing or rap. a beat maker make a track and email it to someone and the producer takes over... please dont give bad advice.
Yo, I gotta agree w/you. Music production is ONE art form & mixing & engineering is a whole different ballgame. My question is how do you place your work? I've been looking for a music industry directory but they"re scams. Will you help me, thanx Pito LOve, Orlando, Fl.
This is one of the most inspirational videos, I have ever seen, thanks man, I'll start to pay more attention to the beats I make. Great speech bro...real talk
There are so many "producers" on youtube, that have great melodies, and I feel there beats, BUT the quality is well below standard. Most people I meet who claim to produce don't know or use an EQ. they have no compression on there track, no limiters, no nothing.
They need to take the time to learn the tools that mold and manipulate sound. They also need to take the time to learn how to do a proper mixdown. Also investing in a pair of quality monitors would be smart!!!
Beats are nothing nowadays without a crazy hook or a full produced song especially when it comes to pop/RnB. Everyone and their moms want to be producers nowadays, just beats don't cut it anymore.
This dude is still right but I do know some people I still label as "Beatmakers" and their mix aren't too shabby.
what he's trynna say is beatmakers just put sounds together and producers make music and take the extra step to make sure the sound quality is on point as well as even giving the artist a concept to go along with the track as opposed to beatmakers that lay tracks down where the synth is loud as hell not thinking maybe the artist might SING on the hook and certain instruments may clash with the artist. beatmakers make roads producers make roads with signs that help u travel safe and easier.
I may be stupid or off topic here but I would like to know the name of the songs you have playing in the background. Did you produce them yourself? If you did there dope!!! Please get back at me at ur earliest convenience.

I find that mixing and equalizing are the hardest aspects of production. I had to upgrade monitors twice because that end product sound totally different on the speakers i was using to create vs. any other system. I am still working on adding effects directly to specific instruments keep that sounds in the range i want them. Or atleast to get close to what i have in my head. Very positive vid. keepem coming somebodies listening!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
to correct the difference of production versus beatmaking: beatmakers send in beats, drums etc., while producers are the last to touch the album or single. That's the single most difference.
some producers don't even make beats, they arrange, bring instrument sections, session players etc.
they work with songwriters, engineers or they engineer, but producers get the REAL money out there. beat makers do good but production is everything.
it's just a shame that some producers i know get caught up in their egos and won't listen to me when i tell them that they needa know all this shit... now i'm miles ahead of as far as "producing" goes.
so, i agree with everyting on this, well said. respect
Being able to layer different instruments myself was amazing, but I would say I was in that "Beatmaker" category. Yeah, I would take my cd's to different speakers too, but that alone didn't make me a producer. I knew how to compose and put songs together, but I didn't know much about the technical stuff which is equally important.
For the last 5 years I've spent a lot of time learning about mixing, eq'ing, compression, and the stuff you talked about.
You are right, being a PRODUCER consists of knowning how to arrange, compose, mix, and especially work with artist the right way. And you'll like what gating can do for your music! Its very much like compression, but on the opposite scale
Thanks man. Very informative. I started out playing keyboard, guitar, and bass when I was young (6-12 yrs old). I'm 27 now. I played in some bands for fun, but most of my time was spent composing and learning how songs were put together. When I was 20 I got a groovebox and was finally able to record multiple tracks and add drums and it was like seeing color T.V. for the first time.
Well said. Its like if some young kid picks up FL and starts throwing a few kicks and high hats together he goes around telling his friends hes a producer, hahaha. I hear it all the time, I have alot of respect for your attitude toward the industry as well, help each other. I think the same, we should compliment not compete, with creative criticism. No critiicisms from me though, you guys are doing great. Keep it up.
Thanks a lot. I like the point you made about creative criticism and bout kids saying that they are producers.lol, it funny cause I see it all the time. Thanks again and keep in touch. Are you working on any music projects?
Got my name from my company I started in film/production in surfing back in Oz around 5 years back, now DJ Mossman. Started DJ'in a couple of years back and only started getting into the production side around 6 months back when I moved to Dubai. So a good couple of years before I will call myself a producer.. lol. Things are pretty sweet here though, I DJ on a 5 star floating restaurant every night and by day advance my skills with FL, Acid, CE etc. I will defs keep in touch. Cheers.
hahaha i ronic i always thought i was just a beat maker until you sayed that a producer will listen to it from many different speakers before letting the public hear it, when i finish my beat projects i make sure they sound full in my ipod headphones, car speakers, well know i know what i am
can u tell me what's the difference between a record producer , a music producer and an audio engineer?, u see , the los angeles recoding school has an audio engineering program and i wanna be a music producer , i just wanna make sure that im doing the right thing going to this school.
Ok well a record/executive producer, is someone who not really has to produce the song, but the whole project. and a music producer is the one who most likely produced the song. Now every professional producer will tell you that you need to know something about engineering. The engineer is the one who tweaks the song and make it radio ready. They are the one that records, mix, and even engineer. So the school you are going to is VERY GOOD!!! It will take your Producing game to another level!
Besides being a producer, I'm also a schooled/certified audio engineer. Thanks for this video. I was actually going to do one on the same subject somewhere in the near future. I won't have to now ;) I'm pretty sick and tired of people (often beginners) calling themselves producers without knowing what it really stands for. Quality control.
Man dont let me stop you from doing a video. The more the better! And plus im feeling your style anyway, Do you like the Triton? So tell me about how you got certified
Yeah I love the/my triton. Sure it doesn't sound as good as the newer boards. (m3,xs,fantom g etc) but as you probably know; certain limitations make you work around it often learning a lot of things along the way. Though it won't be long until you see a brandspaking new xs7 in my future videos ;)
About being certified. Instead of just taking a generic program course I took an audio engineering(/music production) course in which you have to do tests and get grades to be able to complete it. I took it at MPC (in the Netherlands so you won't know it. It's a smaller version of SAE.)Upon completion I received a diploma( and rapport card with final grades) with the best test results of all! :)
You don't know how many times I've said the exact same thing. I am currently working on my Pro Tools Certification. Why? Because i want to mix as well as make tracks and write lyrics. i want to to do it all and be proficient at it.
Yo real talk, im glad that you doing the Pro tools certification. Ive taking many pro tools class and Im going to be taking many more. Where are you going now? One thing that Im not real good at yet is writing lyrics so you just motivated me to step my game up too. That's what this is all about. I'll see you at the top fam.
Yeah, it's all good. We are working on an EP and an LP right now. I gotta write 3 songs to finish the EP off.
Then I gotta work on the songs we were working on for the LP. We got 2 tracks from you guys and might use one of them, I think for the LP.
So it's busy work man.
I'm going to this place called The Electric Lounge in Chicago. It's a Digidesign Certified Training Facility. It's four classes with tests and a certification exam at the end.
Im glad you liked what you see. Please let me know if there is anything special we should do a video about. Stay blessed!! I'll see you at the top! lol

You don't know how many times I've said the exact same thing. I am currently working on my Pro Tools Certification. Why? Because i want to mix as well as make tracks and write lyrics. i want to to do it all and be proficient at it.
Again props for this vid.

See you at the top, let's get there together.
