Well, the Payette has a lot more water and a much longer season for starters. The Smith is almost all granite bedrock, unlike the jumbled dynamited debris along the Payette. There is only one short class 4 section and the rest is class 5 on the smith so there is no beginners section per say. When the water is right, this creek is one of the best creeks in the west, hands down. Try and hit it up around the first of May for the best timing since there is no real-time gauge. Enjoy!
