  • I'm familiar with the song. I have the Patsy Cline version, but I'd never heard it by Don. Great cover.

  • oo this is an old patsy song! one of her best! awww hell everything patsy sang was wonderful...but it's old country song that has been sang by many.

  • This is a nice rendition of a fine country song.

Jhdjed, I saw him in person years ago, and he talked about how Gene Autry was a wonderful singer and sang and Autry song. He appreciates old western music.

  • He did this song justice ,Great talent, been raised country an celtic all my life

  • @yadzx "Yeh , . . .

  • Hank Cochran wrote this song. So although Patsy did a wonderful version it was is not 'hers'. She also sang, & had a hit with, 'Crazy' written by Willie Nelson. She couldn't sing it the way Willie did, or didn't like the way he sang it on the demo, so was persuaded to sing it differently. Other people, 'stars' singing these songs also brought the singer/songwriters to the fore, thankfully. I believe Dylan only started recording his songs because no-one else would.

  • Let's not forget "The King", Elvis for you pups, who also beautifully covered this song. Long live "The King"! Nice job Don...

  • Listen to Don on Crying and tell me he doesn't have breath control!

  • He may not have a strong voice but he has wonderful breath control.

  • I just found out he stayed home sick from school a lot because of Asthma. Which is why he is unable to breath deep enough to be known for a strong voice along with he songwriting talent. I was a singer, and now, if I take a deep breath, cough. I'd love to know what he would've sounded like without the condition?

  • PATSY CLINE

  • Total Bollocks!!..............This is a great song, sung by a man who can sing songs thats all. Dont fanny it up into something it is'nt.

  • When a Qualified artist gives his own version..it allows "us" to feel it slightly different..like a painting in a different lite..not to take away from patsy.

If this was a neon idiot performer I would not wast my time...But Don is one of the greats !

  • thanks for posting, I've looking for anything sung by don mclean. don't have to be compared with the original , patsy is so great but so is this one

  • Goodness gracious, I thought the world revolved around this song when I was 18! The way it is presented here makes true music of the tear jerker sung by Patsy, no offence intended!

  • A NICER version of a golden oldie.

  • i love patsys version but don has a special place in my heart <3 adore his voice, emotion & music. great cover.

  • This song was written by Hank Cochran. but why does Don McLean change the lyrics? He changes "records" to "letters," and "class ring" to "cold drink."

I guess "class rings and records" is not cool enough for Don.

  • @clucaspik

He says "gold Ring" not "cold drink"

  • That makes more sense.

  • Intense words to a great song and Don does the song justice. Great video !

  • I have to say I prefer this version to Patsy's. Very well done.

  • Good song but nobody compares to Patsy.

  • Red Molly has a version, very good.

  • A nice version of a golden oldie, must agree though Patsy Cline's is the best ever

  • Crooner meets folk with a trace of rock and roll and sometimes a piece of country. Wonderful!

  • He's Got You. This version is on Itunes.

  • He glides into a tone sinatra-style. That's what I always liked about him. In a small settin like this (or solo) he's at his best. Best albums: homeless brother ande playing favorites. Actually all his early albums, but that might say more about me than about him.

  • He's got you. That's the title. A work of art isn't it?

  • Only other version I've heard of this is Patsy Cline's and as much as I love Don's voice, the song was OWNED by Patsy Cline!

  • Amen to Patsy Cline

  • It was wrote by Hank Cochran. I have to say I like Pasty Cline's version better..

  • the bass doesn't seem to contribute much on this song..

  • I'll bet it made a world of difference live or on the original recording. Youtube compression has a way of annihilating the lower range.

  • I think he does this on the first volume of his For The Memories albums. GREAT albums - I always fancied trying to do "Over The Weekend" if I can get my piano recording good enough! ;)

  • great version

  • Patsy Cline

  • Dean Martin song "He's Got You"

  • PATSY CLINE- I've Got your Picture. Happy New Year!! Thomas

  • The song's called "She's Got You."

    en. wikipedia. org/wiki/She%27s_Got_You

    Happy 2009 to you too!

    Marly

  • LeeAnn Rimes did this song as well

  • Does anyone have the original version of Wonderful Baby?

  • or "Words and Music"?

  • This is a truly fabulous version. One of the great things about Don Mc is the way he interprets the songs of others. Wonderful

  • yup one of my fav Patsy Cline songs... and Don McClean... another of my top ten favs of secular/folk/country/pop music... awesome stuff! thanks for posting this kitkatkang!!!

  • Patsy Cline had a hit out of this on the country charts way back when she was big.

  • u mean when she was alive lol

  • ROFLMAO!!!

    Oh, that was too funny.

  • Anyone know who his backup players are? The guy on his left looks very much like Rick Springfield to me...

  • lol he does... good eye.... haha my eyes were tearing.... didn't look...

  • Can't help you with the bass player (who looks a lot like Rick Springfield to me, too), but the guitar player is John Platania. He's probably best known for playing with Van Morrison, but I read he toured with Don McLean for a number of years.

  • Song Name: He's Got You

    Artist Name: Don McLean

Album: The Very Best of Don McLean, Favorites & Rarities

    Songwriter(s): Hank Cochran

    Release Date: January 1, 1980

    Label: Universal

  • Don really looks like he is affected by the song. He seems to be living the lyrics. Great video. I just added this one to my favorites. Very nice. :)

  • Loretta Lynn did this song too.

  • Ricky Van SHelton also sang this song ....Classic No Matter who performed it !

  • Don is a fantastic talent!

  • @jhdjed beyond fantastic, . . . , Ive used his profound songs to carry me thru my life as a real cowboy , which he inspired me to be , when I first heard bronco bills lament and am to this day , here in the Roswell New Mexico valley july20th 2010 russell the wizzard on myspace

  • Patsy Cline does a great version of this song. It suits her voice.

  • Name of the song is He's Got You and songwriter is Hank Cochran. It's been sung by a ton of people but mostly by Dean Martin

  • this is a cover of Patsy Cline's "She's Got You". It's such a lovely song and he does a great job :]

  • Yes,you're so so right!

  • @ohhowneat ...I agree, but let's give Hank Cochran the writing credit.

  • 'His nearsightedness causes him to gaze with an eagle visaged squint' - Don Heckman New York Times 1972.

  • one theory is that he stares strangely because he doesn't have his glasses on when he performs in a concert. thus, "he looked right through me as if i wasn't there" (from "killing me softly," roberta flack's song about don mclean)

  • One theory is that he stares strangely during concerts is because he does not have his glasses on, thus, "and then he looked right through me as if i wasn't there" (from "killing me softly," roberta flack's song about don mclean)

  • I think it's "Little Things" recorded by a female country artist.

  • great voice, fantastic songwriter, but dont he freak you when he stares at the camera??????

  • Oh god I want to go see Don again 35 years ago!

  • the name is: HE'S GOT YOU

'cause is not clear in the comments. good song!! love McLean
