Jhdjed, I saw him in person years ago, and he talked about how Gene Autry was a wonderful singer and sang and Autry song. He appreciates old western music.
Hank Cochran wrote this song. So although Patsy did a wonderful version it was is not 'hers'. She also sang, & had a hit with, 'Crazy' written by Willie Nelson. She couldn't sing it the way Willie did, or didn't like the way he sang it on the demo, so was persuaded to sing it differently. Other people, 'stars' singing these songs also brought the singer/songwriters to the fore, thankfully. I believe Dylan only started recording his songs because no-one else would.
I just found out he stayed home sick from school a lot because of Asthma. Which is why he is unable to breath deep enough to be known for a strong voice along with he songwriting talent. I was a singer, and now, if I take a deep breath, cough. I'd love to know what he would've sounded like without the condition?
When a Qualified artist gives his own version..it allows "us" to feel it slightly different..like a painting in a different lite..not to take away from patsy.
If this was a neon idiot performer I would not wast my time...But Don is one of the greats !
Goodness gracious, I thought the world revolved around this song when I was 18! The way it is presented here makes true music of the tear jerker sung by Patsy, no offence intended!
This song was written by Hank Cochran. but why does Don McLean change the lyrics? He changes "records" to "letters," and "class ring" to "cold drink."
I guess "class rings and records" is not cool enough for Don.
He glides into a tone sinatra-style. That's what I always liked about him. In a small settin like this (or solo) he's at his best. Best albums: homeless brother ande playing favorites. Actually all his early albums, but that might say more about me than about him.
I think he does this on the first volume of his For The Memories albums. GREAT albums - I always fancied trying to do "Over The Weekend" if I can get my piano recording good enough! ;)
yup one of my fav Patsy Cline songs... and Don McClean... another of my top ten favs of secular/folk/country/pop music... awesome stuff! thanks for posting this kitkatkang!!!
Can't help you with the bass player (who looks a lot like Rick Springfield to me, too), but the guitar player is John Platania. He's probably best known for playing with Van Morrison, but I read he toured with Don McLean for a number of years.
@jhdjed beyond fantastic, . . . , Ive used his profound songs to carry me thru my life as a real cowboy , which he inspired me to be , when I first heard bronco bills lament and am to this day , here in the Roswell New Mexico valley july20th 2010 russell the wizzard on myspace
one theory is that he stares strangely because he doesn't have his glasses on when he performs in a concert. thus, "he looked right through me as if i wasn't there" (from "killing me softly," roberta flack's song about don mclean)

I'm familiar with the song. I have the Patsy Cline version, but I'd never heard it by Don. Great cover.

I'll bet it made a world of difference live or on the original recording. Youtube compression has a way of annihilating the lower range.
