Ive been searching books for SS history, as Ive been surprised to see all the supportive comments to them on you tube.all Ive found is torture,massacres,criminal activity,incredible brainwashing to the point where even the most obvious lies become standards to live by. the only kind of positive thing Ive learnt is that the troops of the Waffen SS were incredibly brave and capable soldiers I think this was mostly through fear as there leaders were exteremly cowardly psychopathic maniacs.

There is a very good book written on the life and times of Sepp Dietrich: "Hitler's Gladiator" by Charles Messenger. Very informative and gives a good look at his career. He survived the war and lived a quiet life up to 1966.

Additionally - it was Steiner - not Dietrich, who pioneered the camo uniform smocks. They became standard for W-SS units. By 1944 the Germans had set the standard for macho soldier uniform standards (or non-standards as it were). My favorite Sepp story is him yelling to his young officers as they headed out on an op - "bring my boys back!" A soldier's soldiers. (and had exactlyl NOTHING to do with Malmedy)
Dietrich did not command three armies in the Ardennes. He commanded 6 Pz Army and with some exceptions they didn't too well - lack of training. The W-SS by then had lost so many men that the skilled vets were gone and the new guys weren't trained to the proper standard due to lack of time. Neither did they excel in Hungary - similar reasons. Old Sepp is kicked around in the history books but he was a first rate div commander and didn't do badly with I SS Pz Korps in Normandy.

I think your point of view is wrong. The Nazis and Hitler were good organised minority who were ruthless. Moreover the pricipal ideology made it almost impossible for most of the people to not be part of the Nazis. They were on the one hand afraid and on the other hand proud to be part of this ideology. You can almost say the people got brainwashed. Just investigate a bit about the NSDAP.
America didn't do much fighting against the Germans as the Russians did, America claims too much glory for the defeat of Nazi Germany.
America's strong points in WW2 was the bombing raids and that's it their army was no where near as good as the Germans but due to lack of resources the German army could not move as well.

Germany betrayed Russia, a fellow ally, and attacked them. The U.S, British, and the rest of the Allies did not directly help Russia conquer Germany from the east. A big luck for Amerikan and British troups, that in 1944/1945 the German Army suffered from huge difficulties of sypply to fuel, material, anything. Against materially and numerical better equipped troups of Dietrich the Marines wouldnt have got a look in. But the war was allready nearly over.
I agree with the posts below and re-iterate what the narrator said. His men loved him. He wasnt brilliant but very tough,and brave. While tactical and strategical brilliance is very important (esp if in command/-that goes without saying) Sepp's qualities took him a long way. It is said by many that he also had a great charisma about him. If you watch the videos of Sepp decorating personell in his unit you get the feeling he is well liked by the men.
Josef was not the 'brightest crayon in the box', as the old cliche goes. He was not the best and brightest. But he was brave.

Additionally - it was Steiner - not Dietrich, who pioneered the camo uniform smocks. They became standard for W-SS units. By 1944 the Germans had set the standard for macho soldier uniform standards (or non-standards as it were). My favorite Sepp story is him yelling to his young officers as they headed out on an op - "bring my boys back!" A soldier's soldiers. (and had exactlyl NOTHING to do with Malmedy)

Dietrich did not command three armies in the Ardennes. He commanded 6 Pz Army and with some exceptions they didn't too well - lack of training. The W-SS by then had lost so many men that the skilled vets were gone and the new guys weren't trained to the proper standard due to lack of time. Neither did they excel in Hungary - similar reasons. Old Sepp is kicked around in the history books but he was a first rate div commander and didn't do badly with I SS Pz Korps in Normandy.

@999ballzout Adolf Hitler won WW2. Allen Dulles granted Hitler control of the USA by a deal brokered by William Shatner a Martian in 1944. Hitler flew to Mars in a Haunebu 2 in 1944. They staged the warfare til May 1945. Hitler had 4 flying saucers completed, they are the ones depicted in the upcoming movie Iron Sky. Did not the Germans send millions to their deaths on the Eastern front? For what? A war they had little chance of winning at a time when they were still at war w/England. At least the Reds won. Those deaths were not in vain.
Army Group Centre got squashed in June 1944 very quickly - and once the Red Army got going through Romania, Poland, the Order, Berlin - the end came quickly

Scoring victories does not equal coming close you mallethead. From a strategic standpoint when did they come close? Moscow? The Red Army kept on fighting ya pea brain! By Feb 1942 the German Army took 1 mil casualities and they never fully recovered.

I think your point of view is wrong. The Nazis and Hitler were good organised minority who were ruthless. Moreover the pricipal ideology made it almost impossible for most of the people to not be part of the Nazis. They were on the one hand afraid and on the other hand proud to be part of this ideology. You can almost say the people got brainwashed. Just investigate a bit about the NSDAP.

America didn't do much fighting against the Germans as the Russians did, America claims too much glory for the defeat of Nazi Germany.
America's strong points in WW2 was the bombing raids and that's it their army was no where near as good as the Germans but due to lack of resources the German army could not move as well.
Their motives for invading Europe was to stop the Soviet's from taking all of Europe... some good ally that is.

Germany betrayed Russia, a fellow ally, and attacked them. The U.S, British, and the rest of the Allies did not directly help Russia conquer Germany from the east. Britain and the U.S helped occupied France from Germany's tyranny and oppresion. Face it, Germany was prone to downfall since facism controlled Germany, the rest of the world did not like it. The Nazi Regime was nothing more than failure, even though he exterminated millions, and was led by the craziest and delusional man in history.

On a discution about the recrutiment of the 7th SS Prinz Eugen (The first german div with people from balkan, not all were Volksdeiutsche, he argumented this: "The not german voulounteers in the Waffen Ss are just here to save german blood". thats the worse thing ever said in world history for me.

A big luck for Amerikan and British troups, that in 1944/1945 the German Army suffered from huge difficulties of sypply to fuel, material, anything. Against materially and numerical better equipped troups of Dietrich the Marines wouldnt have got a look in. But the war was allready nearly over.

I agree with the posts below and re-iterate what the narrator said. His men loved him. He wasnt brilliant but very tough,and brave. While tactical and strategical brilliance is very important (esp if in command/-that goes without saying) Sepp's qualities took him a long way. It is said by many that he also had a great charisma about him. If you watch the videos of Sepp decorating personell in his unit you get the feeling he is well liked by the men.

Josef was not the 'brightest crayon in the box', as the old cliche goes. He was not the best and brightest. But he was brave.
And he has my respect as a Storm trooper during First World War.
He was an old soldier, and a war hero straight out of the trenches...
And he - Sepp - did not get selected by Der Fuhrer himself to be Hitler's personal bodyguard as well as being placed in the capacity of a General in the Liebstandarte SS Adolph Hitler by random chance... It was by design.

The Handshar Division were tough, determined soldiers who fought in conjunction with Prinz Eugen in the war against partisans in the mountains of Croatia and Romania... that general 'jurisdiction.'
If you want a 'brutality' reference, try Dirlewanger's bunch.
Gotta love a bunch of guys - Dirlewanger's - who used two 'potato mashers' crossed as their unit designation. lol
They were hand-selected criminals who collectively gave the Waffen SS a bad name.

Good people under a bad command. The Germans were the heroes of WWII, fighting with scarce resources, with weapons inferior many times to the situation, who else would have achieved that? The German army,if it would have been under the command of brialliant German commanders would have conquered a territory to make Germany at least the size of the the 1st Reich, and to keep it that way until now.

Wie ihr wisst rekrutierten die Waffen SS ab etwa 1942 immer mehr ausländer in the Divisionen. Sogar solche die 1939 als nicht arier benannt werden würden. Sepp Dietrich hatte dann folgenden kommentar zu den Freiwliigen in Kroatiuen für die 23 Handschar div: "Wer sich nicht freiwillig meldet, dem brennen wir sein Haus ab". "Diese Menschen dienen nur um deutsches Blut zu spaaren". Diese Sätze sind so verachtend. Die Freiwliigen kämpften für die Freiheit Europas und dieser Kommentar??
