Man, my buddy is in the National Guard, and his unit drove down to New Orleans all the way from Indiana. He's white, I'm black. He said after they got there and got set up, the instructions that were given to them from the commander in New Orleans was, "Our job is to NOT let these niggers totally destroy what's left of the city." My buddy said that his unit commander went bananas and instructed them/The Indiana NG to totally disregard the racism and focus on helping the folks of New Orleans.
This is why I'm ultra conservative.. I'd love to be a liberal and raise taxes if I thought it would actually go to help these sort of people and the working poor. Unfortunately thats not what happens. You vote to raise taxes for our poor and they bail out bankers and increase defense spending and save the poor in some 3rd world country that will later hate us. The less they can take and give to the rich or foreign interests the more you can have to help yourself when this kind of stuff happens.
@sckiki1 haha. Well my only problem is the fact that the levees were constructed in 1965, and old stuff doesn't hold up too well against level 5 hurricanes... I do agree that the government failed in not updating the levees or completely finishing them, but hey it takes Minnesota 2 summers to finish one stretch of road. That being said in regards to property loss, in terms of loss of life, the people had a fair amount of notice-not much but still- and there was a mandatory evacuation. hmmm......
@gman1225 Yes, the current (at the time of Katrina) levee system was RE-CONSTRUCTED in 1965 after they were deliberately breeched at the 9th ward location in order to save the French Quarter and other more profitable/rich neighborhoods. We are in agreement then about it being the fault of the local and national govt.
As far as evacuation orders; how do you evacuate if you are in a wheel chair, don't drive, don't have a car, etc?
@sckiki1 For people who weren't in wheelchairs: walking. For people who were: The SuperDome. They allowed disabled and elderly into the Dome long before the storm hit. My only gripe is really with the people who stubbornly stayed then blamed the government. True, many had survived Betsy and other smaller hurricanes but when the local and federal government warned them it was a level 5 and they stayed anyways. Thats my only problem I do sympathize with people who legitimately couldn't leave.

Sadly almost everyone at my job is getting the swine flu vaccine. I tried to warn them but I guess now I'm a have to take a wait and see approach. My whole family got swine flu and it was nothing. My boss doesn't help; he called a meeting saying that a lot of people in our area was going to die from the swine flu; the letter was from the C.D.C. He also stated that their is a gov't mandate that we will have to have RFID cards by mid 2010. I haven't seen this reported on the news yet. Scary stuff

If their trailers haven't been repo'd by the government. The issue with New Orleans is that there is nowhere to work. New Orleans thrived on the mom-and-pop stores - stores that haven't had a chance to come back and get rolling again. The people that are left have very little options as far as employment goes - not that that's much different than the rest of the entire country at this point.

Black folk did very little to end segregation. Yes many did help, MLK broguth attention to the problems of blacks. But ultimately it was people like Eisenhower,JFK,LBJ and their constituents that created the Civil Rights act. gave blacks the right to vote, and eventually eliminated discrimination.

Most ppl have insurance which has made health care out of reach of the poorest. The problem is not rich ppl, the problem is HMOs. Yes they were told to leave but the people down there in the documentary were poor and didnt have the means or money or a place to go to, so how could they leave? The Gov of LA and Mayor Ray Nagin both insisted to the coast gaurd and to the homeland security chief that they could handle anything and didn't need BUsh's help. Ppl in NO only had to walk maybe a mile to escape the flooding. THere hsa been 6 billion dollars raised and lost to and area not work 3 billion.
NO they didn't get hit suddenly, trhey had days to prepare for the storm. It took 4 days for the levees to collapse. It was black ppl who bailed on there neighbors. My taxes paid for the rescue effort. I was there to help clean up. I rarely saw a black person do anything. Most of the cleanup was done by white and latinos volunteers.

Yes go watch Spike Lee's WHOLE documentary it is very interesting yet sad. I don't know why people on here are saying "they should have been prepared" or "they were too stupid to get out" most people did have insurance but the companies didn't want to pay up. Also when you have limited finances, where are you supposed to go with nothing to get you there?
My favorite part of the documentary is when an American engineer talks about the high tech levees used in Holland against floods, a country around the size of Massachusetts with only 13 million souls living there, yet their government really does care about EVERYBODY.

Man, my buddy is in the National Guard, and his unit drove down to New Orleans all the way from Indiana. He's white, I'm black. He said after they got there and got set up, the instructions that were given to them from the commander in New Orleans was, "Our job is to NOT let these niggers totally destroy what's left of the city." This is why I'm ultra conservative.. I'd love to be a liberal and raise taxes if I thought it would actually go to help these sort of people and the working poor. Unfortunately thats not what happens. You vote to raise taxes for our poor and they bail out bankers and increase defense spending and save the poor in some 3rd world country that will later hate us. @sckiki1 haha. Well my only problem is the fact that the levees were constructed in 1965, and old stuff doesn't hold up too well against level 5 hurricanes... I do agree that the government failed in not updating the levees or completely finishing them, but hey it takes Minnesota 2 summers to finish one stretch of road. That being said in regards to property loss, in terms of loss of life, the people had a fair amount of notice-not much but still- and there was a mandatory evacuation. hmmm......

@gman1225 Yes, the current (at the time of Katrina) levee system was RE-CONSTRUCTED in 1965 after they were deliberately breeched at the 9th ward location in order to save the French Quarter and other more profitable/rich neighborhoods. We are in agreement then about it being the fault of the local and national govt.
As far as evacuation orders; how do you evacuate if you are in a wheel chair, don't drive, don't have a car, etc?

@sckiki1 For people who weren't in wheelchairs: walking. For people who were: The SuperDome. They allowed disabled and elderly into the Dome long before the storm hit. My only gripe is really with the people who stubbornly stayed then blamed the government. True, many had survived Betsy and other smaller hurricanes but when the local and federal government warned them it was a level 5 and they stayed anyways. Thats my only problem I do sympathize with people who legitimately couldn't leave.

And in reference to your comment on the swine flu, its really scary considering I watched the CDC (Center for Disease Control) release a report a couple of weeks ago stating that 90,000 will die from swine flu. Sadly almost everyone at my job is getting the swine flu vaccine. I tried to warn them but I guess now I'm a have to take a wait and see approach. My whole family got swine flu and it was nothing. My boss doesn't help; he called a meeting saying that a lot of people in our area was going to die from the swine flu; the letter was from the C.D.C. He also stated that their is a gov't mandate that we will have to have RFID cards by mid 2010. I haven't seen this reported on the news yet. Scary stuff

If their trailers haven't been repo'd by the government. The issue with New Orleans is that there is nowhere to work. New Orleans thrived on the mom-and-pop stores - stores that haven't had a chance to come back and get rolling again. The people that are left have very little options as far as employment goes - not that that's much different than the rest of the entire country at this point.

All the pain, and fighting has made this country what it is today. I think it is pretty great. The only problem we have today is too much pandering to the lowest common denominator. We cannot waste our time and resources on groups of ppl, regardless of color. A nation is only a strong as its weakest link. let the weak perrish!

Most ppl have insurance which has made health care out of reach of the poorest. The problem is not rich ppl, the problem is HMOs. The Gov should return control of medical treatment to doctors and hospitals. more ppl would be able to pay cash for routine treatments. and there would be less problems such as obesity and diabetes which are endimic of individuals failure to take personal responsibility.

this isn't true. People don't understand that local CERT groups are tied into FEMA. Do your homework! Also - LA NG were there within a day or two (called up locally). One last thing people forget - THEY WERE WARNED TO GET OUT AND LEAVE, yet they STAYED. Whose fault is that? US Gov't: "hey everyone, big bad hurricane coming, leave now"... people in NO: "yeah, well, I'm staying". CAT V hurricane hits - WHOSE FAULT IS IT FOR DUMB ASSES STAYING? NEXT TIME LEAVE WHEN TOLD TO LEAVE.

Well since you want to talk about the facts. Yes they were told to leave but the people down there in the documentary were poor and didnt have the means or money or a place to go to, so how could they leave? The government could have helped but choose not too. But let it be a rich place or something that holds the government interest I bet you that they will be there.

WHat's worse is that me an 4 other guys went down there to help out a month after the storm to help clean up. All i saw doing any work was mexicans and white ppl. most of the white folks were from tennesse and SC. @ of my friends were mexicans. we left in disgust at the sight of all the blacks sitting around doing nothing, cept talking shit. they talk alot of shit. Telling us that white ppl shgould be ashmed for lettingthe levees break. Unbelievable

The Gov of LA and Mayor Ray Nagin both insisted to the coast gaurd and to the homeland security chief that they could handle anything and didn't need BUsh's help. Ppl in NO only had to walk maybe a mile to escape the flooding. THere hsa been 6 billion dollars raised and lost to and area not work 3 billion.

NO they didn't get hit suddenly, trhey had days to prepare for the storm. It took 4 days for the levees to collapse. It was black ppl who bailed on there neighbors. My taxes paid for the rescue effort. I was there to help clean up. I rarely saw a black person do anything. Most of the cleanup was done by white and latinos volunteers.

It's greed, all greed. The Federal Government could have done nothing and still be legal. No one asked the Federal Government to step in. It would be considered an invasion for Bush to have sent in troops to help, and we would have heard about that on the news. That region has survived many hurricanes. Bush did not mobilize because he thought that the region would take care of itself, LIKE ALWAYS! And, the levies didn't break until a day later.

I don't know why people on here are saying "they should have been prepared" or "they were too stupid to get out" most people did have insurance but the companies didn't want to pay up.
