Wow you dedicated 7 whole comments to me I feel so honored. I didn't bother to read any of them after the first one btw, you're into over analyzing to validate your erroneous and heavy handed opinions. You don't like dillinger they're not talented or jazzy enought or whatever you think, I don't care. After you said there was nothing unconventional in the songwriting of this song I took you as a joke. I'll leave you to you're misguided elitist opinions. I have more songs to enjoy later
@Transfixion i wouldnt have seen this coment if i hadnt replied to your coment on you "not being a complete dick" but after seeing this you kinda killed that the only reason i came here to check their songs out (after i had already checked them out once and decided they sucked the first time) was because i saw them on a list of "noteable others (which came after the list of runner ups) on mtv's list of the most influential metal bands in history that i found googling pantera (#5 of the top 10)
@DJxOCEANx Thats great, go listen to Devin Townsend and songs you like and I'll do the same. Everyone one this page likes the band and this song. No one thinks baby's first coffin sucks but you, you're in the major minority so I hope you don't think your pseudo-intellectual comments are influencing anyones opinion. Again everyone has their own musical tastes. Everyones here is the same is but you, ur the odd one out go listen to something you like and let everyone here enjoy thisawesomesong
sorry.. i wasnt trying to piss you off if thats what this discussion came across as. just be happy i was the type of person to give them a second chance and not be a total d-bag saying crap like "lmao, fail band is fail" or something like that. if i did that then i would have been a troll
if anyone cares search the song "canada" by behold the arctopus. listen to it and then take note of 2:10 thru 4:00. after 4:00 it kinda falls apart. also search "on impulse" by animals as leaders. i also i made a typo. one of the things i said about listening to anything that sounds good, i meant im not fond of stuff made just to be popular or make money etc...
i can respect the fact that they take influence from jazz. i love jazz. but why did it have to be crappy freestyle jazz... you can be technical and still make a good song at the same time, but this sure aint how you do it... there are plenty of technical songs and guitarist that make good sounding songs like steve vai. or the song "my oath to madness" by arsis. see next comment
@DJxOCEANx I don't think you understand the song or the concept of this band. They can evoke emotion listen to baby's first coffin. They can write straightforward songs like milk lizard or unretrofied. This song is meant to be chatic, challenging and visceral and succeds by using and a constantly changing time signatures. I think its sounds great, I get what they are going for and so do most of their fans. You're too stuck on conventional song writing and consance, this band isn't for you.
@Transfixion first of i am going to suppose that you read all of my comments completely and listened to all the songs i suggested. second: conventional song writing? there is nothing unconventional about this. if it were unconventional it would be completely different sounding to almost everything you have heard. this band doesnt quallify. this has been done to death. i have listend to baby's first coffin, milk lizard, and unretrofied. see next comment.
@Transfixion before i begin on the songs you suggested i would like to say that i have no idea what "chatic" is. and that in this song i really dont hear many time changes. i really dont see how baby's first coffin evokes any form of emotion. of the three songs you suggested i would say that unretrofied is the most emotion evoking and then milk lizard second. see next comment
@Transfixion baby's first coffin is rather pathetic. milk lizard is in between ok and good, but nothing more. it would be a good song but it is poorly executed. unretrofied is good all up until around 2:55. not a very fitting transition (IOW not well executed). and they diss Jesus. i dont find that cool but thats a personal thing so i dont think that will mater to you much nor does it have to do with the song writing. see next comment
@Transfixion but with unretrofied they had to sacrifice technicality for the sound of music. i believe that you should never sacrifice the sound of music for technicality but since this band pretty much seems to be all about technicallity and was not able to incorporate technicality into unretrofied.. well you see where im going here. im going to guess that when you said "chatic" you ment "chaotic." as far as being chaotic, this song fails at that as well. see next comment.
@Transfixion i would also like to add that most of their lyrics are abstract. this is okay as long as they have meaning. (for example: the band He Is Legend) like i said this song isnt that chaotic nor unconventional. if you want unconventional and abosolutly chaotic then listen to the song "ants" by Devin Townsend. it incorporates plenty of chaos and technicality, and doesnt sacrifice the sound of music. see next comment
@Transfixion afterward listen to Devin's other songs (i suggest "Bad Devil", "Noisy Pink Bubbles," "Addicted," and "Death of Music" for starters). and after that if you want more chaos, listen to his old band Strapping Young Lad. i would start with the songs "S.Y.L.," "We Ride," "Underneath the Waves," "Wrongside," and "Love?" and then for a little bonus listen to "almost again." devin townsend is probably the most unconvention artist there is.
@Transfixion if i were stuck on conventional song writing i wouldnt listen to metal now would i? i would only listen to what ever was on the radio. not to say that a the radio never plays anything worth listening to, such as "viva la vida" by Coldplay, and there aint much thats conventional about that song..
@Transfixion music is like cooking. there are main ingredients and then there are spices or other things like that. say, a pickle for instance. technicality is like a pickle. it was never ment to be a main ingredient in a meal. that would be disgusting (fried pickle or pickle soup? no thank you...), but some people find it good in little slices on a burger. it adds some flavor. thats what devin townsend did with "ants".
im a metal head. metal is my first love when it comes to music, but i will listen to anything that sounds good as long as it doesnt go against my beliefs in anything, its made just to be popular and make money or be famous etc. and isnt written by wannabe's... instead of challenging yourself by playing complicated crap how bout you challenge yourself by making something amazing or practice improvising music that doesnt sound like a monkey got a hold of a guitar. see next comment
i dont care how fast you can shred or how hard your song is to play. its gotta sound good. i dont listen to music to be impressed by your dexterity. i listen to music to enjoy the sound. think of it this way. would you rather be able to shred 100mph but not be able to come up with a song or would you rather have a little skill, enough to create a song to make a girl cream her pants. see next comment
technicality is fine as long as you dont sacrifice the sound of musical composure. im not a very good guitar player when it comes to technique and shredding and stuff.. hell, i cant shred if my life depended on it. but i sure can improvise and create an instrumental on the spot to make a girl cream her pants...
the vocalist should make more music like the song "rise of the fallen" by soulfly, which he was featured in. this is just crap. im so sick of all these bands that are so focused on "challenging themselves"... random guitar playing and mathematically equated composure is stupid... its not music. music is creating sound and audible emotion and feeling. not dividing numbers and paterns to make a string of discordant notes and beats... see next comment
Well, I enjoy this as a musician, I'm a jazz drummer, recently accepted to Interlochen, and I enjoy this for the musical aspect of it, how complicated it is, it makes a better musician to learn tough time signatures such as these, and I like to write out sheet music to these songs to help get better at understanding writing and what goes into it.... so.... I don't think it is terrible, and no lobotomy.
@beefcake8888 I'm pretty sure that for being a drummer, a lobotomy is a prerequisite. =P
I think "its uber complex" is a horrible defense for music. There's a reason why the simple 4/4 beat is so prevelant. If you're looking for senseless complexity, why don't you have a computer devise a rhythmic figure? Plug in some algorithem and have it give you some monsterous disaster. It'll be so complex!
Beauty is grounded in simplicity and patterns, not complexity with no aesthetic sense.
Plugging in an algorithem wouldn't take any skil then would it? I like to chalange myself and accel as a musician, this is how i choose to do it, if you don't understand that, it's fine by me.
@beefcake8888 Don't get cocky boyo, you're not the only musician here. I play a number of instruments, drums among them.
What I meant is that if you're looking to challenge yourself, you can plug an algorithem into a computer, and try to learn whatever it is that comes out. Why don't you do that? I'm sure it would be a crazy challenge.
In fact, why don't you put down the sticks and try ramming your head against the wall 120 times in a row, I'm sure that'd be a crazy challenge.
It would be challenging, but pointless. And the head against the wall thing.... it's uncalled for i guess, im not going to stoop the the level of insulting eachother over the internet.
@beefcake8888 No, see, thats EXACTLY my point. I didn't bring up the head banging thing to insult you, just to illustrate that pointless complexity is just stupid. Same as learning some pointlessly complex rhythm signature.
And thats why I don't think you saying that this piece is compex is a good defense of its merit. Sure its complex, but sounds shitty. Learning it would be about as fruitful as learning the algorhithim or banging your head against a wall.
@Chefodeath Look dude. You're entitled to your opinion, and I can respect that, but this is some complicated piece of work. If you don't like it, do not listen to dillinger escape plan anymore. That's a lot simpler than going on youtube and telling people here that it sucks.BTW why were you checking this out in the first place?
I think this song is about how Metallica sold out. Meaning, they changed their style lots of people loved soley for making more money and gaining more popularity. 8/25/88 was the date ...And Justice For All came out, and that was Metallica's last album before they sold out.
from what I gather from searching Google is this:
"8/25/88 was the release date of Metallica's fourth album "...And Justice for All". This is according to Metallica's website discography, however Wikipedia and other sources may list the release date differently."
Dunno sounds like a likely guess as a lot of metal bands today were inspired or atleast growing up around a heavily Metallica-influenced community which, indirectly or directly, was ultimately affected by Metallica's exposure.
I was such a skeptic when Greg joined but I have to say, dude is so goddamn talented
