  • Dad rocker.

  • You go Ian, you tell 'em, man...

  • i may not agree with everything ian says but this gave me goosebumps

  • This is hardcore and punk to me.

  • PLAY ARPEGGIATORS!!!!!!!

  • Obviously he's gonna win this case cuz he was in a band called MINOR THREAT. he knows how it goes

  • Ian Makaye is the man, and he only sees things the way that they truly are .. he has a real handle on common sense .. Oh but I guess that common sense is not so common anymore .

  • Did they pass the law.

  • @Fozzy757 It says in the description that they didn't.

  • A great man.

  • I love sensible people who think about the big picture. Keep up the great work Ian.

  • @captainblewhard Why are you treating Fugazi like some sell out? It's not like having a diverse fan base is bad. Hell, if a kid listens to Fugazi, I applaud them!

  • represent dc woot

  • Comment removed

  • It would be nice for ALL music venues were ALL ages but the sad part is that most music venues make their profits from all the booze they sell at shows.

  • i fucking love this man

  • Yeah, he needs the pre-teen & teenie-bopper fan base otherwise no one else would buy his crap. As people grow up and move on from the "boy scout band" ideology, they need to constantly replenish their fan base with soccer mom's dropping their kids off and picking them up from Fugazi shows. 70% of the crowd at their shows are still wearing braces.

  • I love Ian but he's really kind of full of himself.

  • AMEN Ian!! This guy rules... his band rules...

  • Ian MacKaye has an almost outlandish ego but, bottom line, he puts his money and time where his mouth is.

  • eat shit and die Mr Graham

  • 1:20-1:25 is all he had to repeat

  • He'll always be Minor Threat!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yea except Ian is a cool guy and Henry is a douchebag.

  • @yazid3848 How is Henry a douchebag? I really want to see this. You don't get an award for how short your comments are, so why don't you explain yourself?

  • @straightedge442 Cuz he's full of himself. So is Ian nowadays. Inflated egos. I still love them but if you listen to them talk enough you'll understand. Of course the difference is Ian isn't anywhere near as famous as Rollins.

  • @chabowker You don't know anything about the guy, so you're cutting him down either to gain popularity from other closed-minded leeches, or you're doing it to make you feel better about the direction of your life. I did enjoy the lovely attempt at condescending me, though, because I have actually heard both of them talk more than you, and have met them both in person.

  • @straightedge442 All I heard was "beer beer beer beer beer beer beer beer beer beer beer".

  • @chabowker Cute.

  • @straightedge442 "I have met them both in person" Well good for f'in you, dude. The whole straight edge scene's the epitome of "closed-mindedness" simply because they attempt to push their agenda on others. Go do or don't do whatever the freak you want to, just don't tell me what to do. I experimented with various substances in my youth & am here to say that I didn't end up in a gutter, contrarily, I'm a hard working husband, father, and tax payer. You have straight edge - I have self-control.

  • @captainblewhard Haha, way to make a generalization. I'm truly enlightened that you're such a self-proclaimed responsible person. But, "contrarily", I always looked as straight edge as a stand of individuality and personal choice, not a fucking militant movement. I've never looked down on people who drink alcohol or do drugs. I don't remember "telling you what to do" at any point in this conversation, or my life for that matter.

  • @straightedge442 Cool dude. Thanks for sticking up for yourself. My user name is meant for people to remember that they must take my personal opinion for the value that it has - zilch. Later!

  • @straightedge442 Cool dude. Thanks for sticking up for yourself. My user name is meant for people to remember that they must take my personal opinion for the value that it has - zilch. Later!

  • @yazid3848 He acts like a douchebag sometimes, but he also has some cool stuff to say.

  • stickin it to the man.

  • ian and henry rollins are so inspirational

  • That ban was owned.

  • yeah i mean look at the SF bay area. it was fucking thriving as a music scene back about 10 or 15 years ago, maybe even a little bit less. now it is a whole lot harder to become successful in the area. there are very strict age limits on venues that serve, and just being a venue causes suspicion and a lot of them are monitored. also, the for of communication offered by the internet definitely discourages actual communities and weakens music scenes, because nobody wants to help each other anymore

  • I love how Ian still feels what its like to be a teenager. He is so inspirational.

  • Comment removed

  • I really hate places with age requirements. If I go to a venue to see a band, I want the band, not a buzz, I can stay home for that.

  • The most intellectual punk ever. Period.

  • What happened after this?

  • Does anyone know the outcome of this?

  • @pHiLind3

yes Ian went to Jail after the hearing because he refused a court order to do a Minor threat reunion

He is now in jail and is up for parole in 3 years

  • such a smart man

  • I Love Ian

  • So what was the decision?

  • This guy has a lot of integrity

  • @Soundgardener80 Ian is the definition of "Integrity" :)

  • i think he fuckin' proved his point

  • Wow that was great!!! Go Ian!! I wonder what the decision was in the end, I hope he won and there was no age ban put in place.

  • Comment removed

  • I'm currently doing a presentation at university on the influence of Ian MacKaye on both the hardcore scene and after, and have to say the more I find out about him the more I admire the man. He is truly an inspiration for anyone who loves music.

  • Can anyone tell me what the final decision was concerning this?

  • not about straight edge... straight edge is a franchise, ian mckaye accidentally coined the word.

  • @sh83982

And the funny thing is he was inspired by Jimi Hendrix's "If 6 was 9" to write the song "Straight Edge", which coined the term. So called "straight edge" people obviously have missed the point of his song. For me it is about doing what you feel is right for you, not what people around you are doing.

  • he doesn't support sxe, guys, wake up!

don't make sxe into a fucking religion!

  • wow, what an awesome guy.

  • Straight edge forever. Feels good to be clean and now that you can love life. Be strong stay true drugs are fir losers.

  • @cuzidid100 lol

  • Fuck Ian MacGay! He's into raping dogs dressed as Hitler.

  • @BeatnikFromHell666 ... that's pretty much the dumbest comment I have seen on youtube, and THAT'S saying something...

  • @wordupassholes Dude, you should check some of the other comments made by people, that's pretty intelligent compared to them.

  • Best thing Ive seen all year, honestly, He is an idol.

  • what kind of... jackass.. gives this a thumbs down.

  • ian is a legend and he has something truly meaningful to say

  • "they're human beings, they're not FODDER for predators or business people..."

    Yessss, finally.

  • "they're human beings, they're not FODDER for predators or business people..."

    Awwww yeahh.

  • I think I just shed a tear. This was very moving.

  • I hate it when certain people come into the scene, punk or indie or any music, and ruin it for everyone else with whatever shit they bring into it. If I were a club owner, I would just ban alcohol at my club, because that is going to cause trouble, and I am not prying anyone's sorry ass away from their car to prevent them from beer-fueled vehicular manslaughter. But that would go down like a lead zeppelin because liquor sales keep clubs open. God damn. Thank you Ian.

  • ian for president anyone :D

  • Well said i agree 100 percent

  • "We can't have demonstration"

Uh huh. Stop me from clapping for: 1. A remarkable musician., 2. An amazing human being, and 3. Someone who pretty much shut down your idea of a ban for 21 and under in 4 minutes flat.

  • kids are human grown ups you rember how it is wanting to go and not being to honestly this is new gen man kids are always gonna be like that adults gotta be adults ya know it's life

  • Stick it to the MAN IAN!!!!!

  • Spoken like a true Scotsman.

  • @lamacola

Shut the fuck up you stupid fuck! Don't judge a mother fucking book by it's mother fucking cover! By the way, its not teens that are causing this country's issues, it's old fuckin dueschetards like you that can't adapt to change! @cuzidid100 Hell yea

  • @Iamcola65. You were once a teen and yet you bag on them. We are responsible but you look at teens as a whole and not an individual. Some of my friends don't look like they are good kids but the get straight A's. So for you to say that teens create problems for the country is insane. You are the one that votes.

  • ian so cool!

  • This should be a nationwide issue.I wasnt able to see on of my favorite punk bands because of a dumb bar. Fukin fake venue owners who are only in it for the money and not the music. Im planning to open a venue actually in Roy UT where there are absolute no true venues in a 100 mile radius.Gimmie a couple years ;)

  • @jare3do While it was a bit uncharacteristic of him to toot his own horn, he's not exaggerating. He knows to play the right cards when it counts.

  • there are more important issues than all ages ban...cmon...

  • As I turn 30, I don't want kids at shows anymore, haha.

  • What does he say at the end? Mr. Mackaye, we can't....?

  • @Ethaneeze have demonstrations?

  • used to watching videos of him being a teenager screaming minor threat lyrics... awesome speech.

  • 1983 i met this man

  • he's an arrogant fella isn't he, i guess his point was from the possition of the music "industry" (bands not burrocrasy) and how this proposal would effect thier freedoms and buissness though, so it does good to point out what fugazi might mean to the people who go to these places.i find it scary how laws can be passed by people who have no real relation to the subject simply as a first thought to the problem. good to see some consoltation being put in place.

  • hes a dick but i love this

  • @WolfLantern1 why? haha

  • fuckin' love this guy

  • This man lived in my ward and fought against the black cat from being +21? Ian mackaye is a hero

  • LOL...long and hard

    Fugazi rules

  • it is amazing how much people under rate punk saying were a bunch of dumb asses and failures... one of the gratest punks of all time right her shows that we are not a bunch of dirt bag dumb fucks

  • I wish this guy was my dad when I was a teenager! My hero!

  • ian mackaye for president!

  • ian is the boss keep on fucking shit up without getting fucked up

  • @Iamcola65 How is a kid with a gun any more dangerous then an adult with a gun? They both have the ability to kill with one movement of there finger. In the video Ian makes an amazing arguement, you clearly missed the message he's trying to send.

And I'm under 18 and I don't know what I would do if my local shows we're 18 and up, shows and music are what I live for.

If you really want this bill to pass, you can go fuck yourself.

  • @Iamcola65 The elders are the ones that fuck it up fool.

  • @scoopsdujour shut up, elders might not be perfect but atleast we're responsible and wiser. look at them kids these days... black hair, ripped clothing, strange awful music... they look like pandas who've been at the flea markets. don't tell me they aren't some source for our problems in this country

  • @Iamcola65 hope this is sarcasm brother, otherwise you miss the current. Fugazi, it's predecessors, and those that heard them own this country. I am old, have died my hair, have scared folk with my views, and I am proud of it and I vote.

  • Comment removed

  • I love you Ian. I love you Fugazi.

  • How many all ages gigs happen at the local level anymore. Most gigs I've been to in Detroit, Chicago, NYC and Philly have been at least 18+. Most all ages show I've been to have been for larger acts. That kinda sucks. A ban would just take away what few were left. Glad this didn't pass. Cool video.

  • @yojimbo81 I agree; up in Boston we have about zero all ages underground venues. The closest reputable one is four hours away in central MA, while most bands I look forward to are busy in places like The Middle East. I hear it's a great venue, but I won't know until I'm legal. All you folks who do have access to live music should NOT be taking it for granted.

  • This is what punk rock is all about.

  • what was the outcome of these hearings? was the law passed?

  • if everybody would think like Ian , the world would be a wonderfull place , now all we can do is dream ...

  • Its not about the age, it's about the heart

  • IAN = GOD

  • @densaugo007 LOL!!!!! Just like nazis thought about their sXe dictator, Adolph "Straight Edge" McGay!

  • @BeatnikFromHell666 he's the guy who made abstinence cool, he's not a dictatir, it's not a set of rules, it's just a way of life, and I thank him very much to speak up for whole new way of life

  • Music saved my life growing up. I wouldn't be here if Public Storage, or the Glasshouse had age restrictions.

  • he should run the world

  • preach on brother ian

  • age discrimination.

  • As a minor, I would hate to have all ages venues banned over a shooting.

  • Well spoken. I don't understand how anyone could disagree.

  • i've been going to shows since 1986 (when i was 14) and cannot imagine how crummy it would be if there was any sort of ban based upon age. thank you Ian for always putting your money where your mouth is and being a voice of reason...

  • @bulldogbat something similar happened to me. i was accused in court of being a killer for being vegan straight edge har har har har i didnt fly

  • @mediattackrecords teens are dumb and dont know how to judge so theyre just better off giving up on it even adults have a hard time judging people

  • @mediattackrecords not all teens are dumb but many are still totally brainwashed by parent culture and religious fundamental ideas. its unamerican and against rock n roll. rock n roll is the way teens learn to be decent americans and clearly they know deep down what freedom is

  • VIGILANTES whether skinheads or punks arent that good. they dont really help society too much

  • @mediattackrecords As a whole counter-culture or counter-cultures, yes. Individuals in those scenes have done and are doing amazing things though.

  • this is a perfect example of attacking the leaves instead of the roots of a problem

  • Is there a vibrant music scene in DC? I thought it died years ago.

  • I <3 ian

  • If only this man came to Ireland, all the good venues are 18s only, bastards

  • Seriously, we need more all-ages venues! I just found out about a local venue and they wouldn't let me in because I was under 21... even on their "Punk Nites" which occur once every so often you have to be at least 18. So that means I have to wait almost a year just to even go to SOME shows which MIGHT be worth seeing. Being a punk rocker AND a minor is barely fun anymore. "Too young to rock!"

  • When I thought I could not love Ian anymore, I see this video. Always my hero. Even more of a hero now.

  • this is inspiring

  • ian speeks the truth when i was younger every show was all ages dosent he sound just like he did back when he younger

  • He is absolutely right, and it's sad to go to a show and see them turn away kids. When I was a teenager there was nothing that mattered to me more than the music I loved and I would have been devastated if the government stepped in and separated me from such an important part of my life. Ian is a musician of such passion and integrity, it's really an inspiration to listen to really tap into the core of how important music is for young people, and everyone.

  • Everything is turning farther and farther from the truth.

  • great stuff

  • Ian Mackaye rules! One of my favorite musicians of all time! Thank you for still getting pissed off and standing up against bullshitters to this day.

  • Its is ..... insane

  • @jtheatme77 loser

  • MINOR THREAT!!!

  • Mackaye is fucking well spoken.

It's good to know he has had this much influence so far.

  • year? pls post on description

  • Jump to 1:50 for the meat of his passionate argument. It's well stated and factually indisputable.

If anything All Ages should be a roll model for the rest of the country (!)...as long as you have cool adults keeping it on track and trouble free of course. Gotta keep the youth busy.

  • He's a week public speaker in this format. I love and respect Ian's music but he tuned them out very quickly.

  • i love this man.

  • he looks like malkovich here

  • Well fucking said!

  • Ian is now offically my hero

  • The man should be president of the UN...

  • imagine that...

  • @Kingrizla2000 With Greg Graffin, Jello Biafra and Henry Rollins as his advisors :D

  • @fahim113 fuck yes.

  • @Kingrizla2000 nah the UN is too fucked up but if was there he would solve world conflicts

  • @Kingrizla2000 Yes so we could lynch him. Fuck his straight edge philosophy. Another SXE dictator after Hitler.

  • @BeatnikFromHell666 Shut the fuck up. Ian MacKaye has done more in his life so far than you will EVER accomplish

  • @BeatnikFromHell666 straight edge philosophy he didnt do it to get this much attention he did it to prove a point that not everyone needs drugs and mind stimulates to control their lives so fuck off and leave ian mackayes name out your mouth

  • @BeatnikFromHell666 straight edge philosophy he didnt do it to get this much attention he did it to prove a point that not everyone needs drugs and mind stimulates to control their lives so fuck off and leave ian mackayes name out your mouth. and to compare him to hitler is so outrageous and disgusting that someone should fuck you up hitler was a mental drug using psychopath.

  • @fatfinnISfat I agree that Hitler was a psychopath, he did speed and it's for assholes anyway. I don't do speed. Fuck that!

  • fugazi is great. everyone should experience their music.

  • 4:07 powned 2 the max lmfao!

  • "Teenagers are human beings!"

hell yes. Ian is freaking amazing.

  • damn

    he is amazing

  • go ian!

  • Ian MacKaye is my fuckin hero.

  • Ian invented straight edge most modern xxx kids dont know that it s pathetic. but such a great man . a legend . a guiness

  • ian ftw

    im not straight edge

but ian is a smart dude

  • Ian is such a legend, he makes a lot of sense. I hate the fact that i've been gigging with my band for a year and a half and we've only played one all ages gig. It really sucks. Especially since i'm 16 (bars don't know that)

  • @andywhorehall

being forced??...who would be forcing him to tell these peole the way it should be??....trust me noone forces ian mckaye to say anything bro.

  • @ryanking909780

andywhorehall is not saying that 'someone' forced Ian to say that but rather the circunstances did...

  • Yeah! Go Ian!

  • yeah, his hormones and thoughts have been in check his entire life. damn, dude, ian should be the anti- president

  • 3:26 ian is honestly one of the smartest people IN american media, probly caus he didnt fry his brains on drugs like all the other stupid fucks on tv
