This is really easy to do if you have windows 7. Simply type in scanpsi.exe at search down by start button. Probably nothing will appear and so then clcik for further search which will open a page that will include an option of C drive. Click that and then a list of pst files will appear including the icons for broken files. The repair is as per this video with a back up made and repair completed. This video gave me the confidence to do it and spatre the frustration of non opening outlook.

where's the outlook folder in vista??

I found the Inbox repair tool but I'm totally lost after that step.

could you tell me how to get to the outlook folder from the C drive?

Thanks!! I was struggling to get the repair

done and this video held my hand and told me exactly what I needed to

do. It works so thank again for the help! Now I will also take your advice and get a backup solution in place so it does not happen agan.
