The first episode was great, it would have been perfect if the "white walker" intro was a bit shorter and there was a flashback or two (kind of like the epic flashback battle in the intro to Fellowship of the Ring), showing a young Robert smashing in Rhaegar's chest with his warhammer in the midst of the river battle. It could have been done with a stand-in (they were wearing helmets).

Every other fantasy is like "lets get a fellowship of a dwarf, an elf, a warrior and a woman together and they overcome a darklord of some sorts". Most fantasy today is like cheap rip offs of Tolkien.

That's insultin to the author's work (and to the HBO staff as well) who makes a really good book (series) and some people limit it to a beverly hills 90210 kind of thing. I would strongly recommend reading the first book (and then the others, because it's impossibile to stop) before the tv show comes. @ThePariahDark I love the books. Please don't get me wrong. However, based on the trailers and teasers so far released I am crushed at how far the HBO series deviates in it's character choices. I can't say much about story right now, but there have been a lot of terrible choices during casting. I mean, just look at Lysa in this clip. She looks 50 and reedy not 32 and absurdly obese. Physicality affects mentality. IMHO this is one of many poor casting choices.

But then again as people who read the books we had our minds allready set how they should look. So the fact they had a different idea then you or me is not reason enough for me not to watch it. To see Ice and Fire brought to live means so much to me that I'm willing to forgive certain things.

@dietrious Alright, for one she wasn't absurdly obese in the books she was plump, there a big difference. Two, while some of the choices aren't exactly as I imagined them to be I think they've done a fine job casting. And the reason for the increased age was that the series originally intended a seven year jump between book three and four or so, something GRRM changed his mind on, so these ages are more correct to his original vision.
