hey wayne i got a ?? for you. i just got a 91 ton nonintercooled and i turned the fuel pin to the stepest ramp then the star wheel, the fuel pin had marks where it was moved before but i got it in the right place, the star wheel is my ?? if some1 has already turned it what will happen if i turned it
Great video my friend after installing that boost elbow that will also clean up a bit of smoke to = more air if you look at video of my motor theres a little blue anodized fitting inbetween my wastegate and turbo same effect as your elbow
take a small dremel with a grinding disc and cut a flat head slot in the FRONT side of the idle screw, it will make adjusting the idle screw very easy. and move the nut to the outside towards the front of the truck as well.
After looking at an exploded view of the VE IP i understand why it will runaway. But I don't understand why the fuel solenoid won't kill it. Where does the fuel come from during runaway with the key off? Only runaway I've ever dealt with was due to a blown turbo seal, luckilly i had a fire extinguisher to kill it with.
@BigBoy4005 A runaway can occur while turning up the fuel on the VE injection pump, the reason they run away is that the control collar can't move far enough towards the "defuel" end of the plunger (making the spill port area smaller), and the backpressure in the spill port becomes high enough that engine speed goes out of control. This is why they will idle OK but then hang at high RPM. At low RPM there's not enough backpressure to start the runaway.
Another thing you might mention about drag trucks is that most of that smoke at the start of each run is because of the large A/R turbos they run and therefore not being able to keep up with heavy fueling down low. Heard of many windowed blocks using propane, but hope you're able to control it enough to avoid that. Good vids tho, interesting to see all this done, haven't been able to work on cummins much myself.
Great info! 1 question thou , the last 2 video's you've talked about runaway? I'm assuming your meaning that it can go full throttle if adjusted wrong! Great vid's!
Funny how people think black smoke is cool that is just your money going out in smoke and no benefit in horsepower. Glad you explained that in this video not many people know that.
Also many people don't realize turn up the fuel you GOTTA watch the EGTs the 5.9 12 valves are max 210-220 hp if you want to use the truck for working everyday ie pulling or hauling max gvw.
TheDieselStop you dont have to put propane or water meth/nos on these cummins to clean up the smoke. they smoke cause they have to much fuel and not enough air, i have a 2008 dodge cummins 3500 and i have a S478 turbo with 180hp injectors and it only smokes when im am a dead stop taking off to heavy but around 1800rpm my S478 starts spooling and it cleans up and with my set up im laying down 750+hp. PS nice chevy/cummins project you have going there.
@cumminsdiesel100 I know you dont have to but it is just like gale banks talks about black smoke is waisted HP. I did say that NOS or propane is a way to help clear up the smoke & make power.
Wayne u never did say which way to turn the smoke screw or the power screw and can i just turn the smoke screw up without turning the star wheel and the power screw ?

Hi ..how do you turn the fuel up on a Lucas cav pump ??
unclebuck6291 2 months ago
Surely you're going to look into and sort out the bloe by before working the engine even harder?
macspud28 3 months ago
@macspud28 I am pulling the motor in a few days to build it.
TheDieselStop 3 months ago
cool...didn't know you could shut one down that way....will that work on a 5.9 24V too?
mstep3 3 months ago
I really liked that you talked about the heat from the exhaust manifold to the airfilter.
I think there is alot of "tuners" that thinks a filter like yours, mounted right on the turbo like that gives alot of power.

Is it possible to bend the tab instead of trying to turn that idle screw?
edzgarage 6 months ago
@edzgarage Not if you want it done the correct way. I think you will have other issues if you bend the tab.
