  • Great Video, I dig the powertone and the Ludwig COB.

  • The bronze ludwig sounded amazing.

  • Rogers Dynasonic for me..

  • Love the gripper! Trade my left one for the 552. I Have a PreSerial (61er62)Ludwig Pioneer in White Pearl, I tune it much tighter. I love playing with the instability of the 6 lug tuning, how little edge spots get tighter than others. It's interesting after playing for weeks on my 9x14 HeavyRockNine with those 1/2inch aluminum 10 lug hoops. Great job on the vid.

  • Great drum sounds, great drumming, great video! I'm going to have to pick the Slingerland Radio King single ply as my favorite sounding snare....... Mmmmm! Mmmmm!!! Also, none were bad, all good!!!

  • Do you tune both heads to one note?

  • You have provided an excellent forum for comparisons. Your very well thought-out presentation is commendable.

  • not to sound uneducated.....but wuts that knob at 0:10 sec on the ludwig acrolite?

  • @jermzguru23 No that's a very good question. That's the lever for the internal damper. These older drums had an adjustable felt pad which muffled the top head, from the inside. Early Ludwigs had a lever to move htis pad, called 'the baseball bat' style by collectors. They switched to a round knob in the early 1960's on most drums.

  • @troutstudio does that mean there was no need for a studio ring?

  • Wow - very cool - can definitely hear all the personalities. You had me worried at first when I didn't see the Dynasonic follow the other Rogers drums. Nice!

  • @bcdrumthemil Thanks very much.

  • #3 FTW!

  • did you do any compression? and how did you tune the snares? they all sound wonderful!

  • Interesting video..thanks!

  • @tmont007 Thanks!

  • @tmont007 Thanks!

  • Get some Sonor.

  • @drabhand Love to!

  • I think this is the most fun and funky snare drum shootout on You Tube.

Drummers, recording engineers, true hip hop dj's and B-Boys should agree.

    Well done troutstudio.

  • @stillphil Thanks very much. Glad you liked it.

  • I felt sorry for those Pearl Export Drums having to follow that Radio King! ;-)

  • @J4B7 Lol. Good drum though. I just sold it.

  • not that keen on any of them but Pearl snares were the best of this bunch

  • the supraphonic is not tuned right, i guess

  • I love that Ludwig sound! I found a supra for $60! Great video!

  • @MultiDeanthomas Well done. Thanks!

  • I watch this all the time because i love the beat. it's so good

  • It is pretty hard to beat the acrolite sound. Of course, all of the snares were unique so each probably has an ideal application.

  • @SonorSonicFan Absolutely correct, imo. I like them all.

  • in my opinion the acrolite and the supraphonic sounded pretty good, very very nice video!

  • @MarkusGronroos Thanks for listening.

  • Awesome, thanks

  • @deanmatters Thanks!

  • god i love em all! though its the radio king for me

  • @eunicefinger Thanks! I do love too, especially since I restored it from a very poor state. Thanks for posting, trout

  • Where is the most recorded snare in history The Ludwig Suphronic" Ludalloy...Aluminium Shell with Chrome plating?.....its not there.

  • @jenk1255 I didn't own one then. But I do now and there's a video on my channel . . .

  • I've got a supraphonic 402 6.5x14, and it rules!

  • @blinkcustom I would love a 6.5" Good on you and thanks for posting, trout

  • I have the same pearl export !! Sounds killer loud :) got for 100 bucks and its in mint condiction :)

  • @mattbrkic You did well. Mine has always recorded very well. Hope you're digging yours, trout

  • Hey man I have a pre-serial Pioneer black oyster pearl. Love how yours sounds. Tight on bottom, medium tight on top, or something special? Hints would help thanks so much!!!

  • @SaltyPenguinAHT Thanks very much. BOP would be very tasty indeed. Nothing special, medium all around I guess. I love the woody tone of the Pioneer . . thanks for posting, trout

  • Well done great idea !

  • @MrSnarey Thanks very much! All the best, trout

  • 10 prettay snares

  • Here's a tip for the Dyna Sonic. Take the top head off an take out the muffler. Then crank the top head and let that baby resonate to its heart's content. I've done this to mine (I like a articulate ringing CRACK to cut through a band) and that baby SINGS!! Most versatile and best sounding snare I've come across. Everyone that plays it says it sounds AMAZING.

  • this video is showcasing the snares... but your bass is AMAZING

  • @stapleboy456 Thanks very much. I miss that drum, since I had to sell it with a kit. I have a new (old) one to replace tho. All the best, trout.

  • Slingy Radio King is so lush!

  • loving the tone of the rogers maple/poplar and the way that slingerland sings! awesome snare bro! congrats!

  • excellent,very informative.my fave? the radio king!

  • number 9 class!!!

  • Number 5. Wow. I never new those old Roger's maple snares could sound so good. Great video clip, by the way.

  • Sounds good! How are they tuned?

  • wow i have the exact same snare (number 3) except like 10 times dirtier. i wish mine looked that beautiful! still sounds great though.

  • Thanks for sharing this, fascinating study.

  • clear for me, i love rogers altough i'm not a drummer!

  • Ill take them all.

  • Great video! Does cob powertones dryness comes from muffling or from shell it self?

  • It's between # 5 and # 8. Playing them, what did YOU think ? How did you tune them ? Tight top, loose bottom ? Did the drumheads make a difference ? For # 8, did you use Rogers wires or Puresound ?

  • My favorites are the Rogers Powertone(wood), Ludwig Acrolite and Supra(bronze) and the Slingerland Radio King

  • My favorite sound so far in this batch with current tunings is the wooden Rogers Power Tone.

  • I was surprised at how good the Export sounded...but I liked #3 Ludwig Supraphonic COB the most

  • long live the radio king!!

  • They all sound pretty awesome

  • 9!!!!

  • Hey man, this is a beautiful thing you've done here. My vote goes to the Ludwig Supraphonic chrome-over-brass.

  • Sweet video and arsenal of snares. I own a '70 acro, '69 supra 5 1/2, '74 supra 6 1/2 and would like to know if you could post a drum dial setting for the acro and supra on both heads to help get the range of how you tuned these drums? Thanks

  • troutstudio,

i'd love to have YOUR personal opinion about all the snares you've tried in this video. What's your favourite? And what's your favourite wood snare drum?

  • @eluxoso Well that is a tough one. I go thru periods of liking one a bit more than the other. I like the bronze Ludwig. My fave wood is the Rogers Powertone. Thanks for posting - all the best, trout.

  • @troutstudio I agree. That ROGERS wood is pretty awesome sounding. I wish you had a wood Dynasonic, that would be interesting. THAT is the most expensive classic drum, in WMP finish, right ??

  • Not a drummer. But now i guess i know i like wood snares versus metal ones. The Rogers and Slingerland sounded the best to me. Metal ones had more bottom end but the wood ones had more ring to them.

  • @stratotak Yes the wood snares are my faves. And you have picked the good ones. Thanks for the comment and all the best - trout

  • Dude, the Acro sounds sweet. Thinking about getting one now...

  • Thanks mate. The Acro is a great drum at a good price. Take care, pk

  • What a great vid. Loved the Rogers Powertone (wood), the Slingy Radio King, and the Dynasonic!

  • Thanks for posting. You have good taste. Take care and all the best - pk

  • I would be happy to have any of those snares but the Rogers dynasonic was really nice.

  • The Dyna is a great drum indeed. Thanks for posting.

  • the powertone was nice (the CoB)

    Radioking was really nice to.

the pearl export was really good, strangly enough

  • Thanks for the comment. You have good ears. I will be posting a new snare drum vid soon. Hope u check it out. All the best for 2010. pk

  • wow i didnt know acrolites could sound sound so good

  • Thanks for the comment. Quite a few people have mentioned the Acro. A cheap vintage drum that sounds great. All the best, pk.

  • Nice snares! I have a 67 Ludwig Acrolite dated Oct. 67. How do you have yours tuned? Great video, thanks for sharing! BD

  • I would say all my snares are medium tight, top and bottom. The Acro has more ring, so live I use a medium donut as a muffler. Great that you have a 67! All the best, pk

  • PK..thanks for you response. There is nothing like classic Ludwig snares. My next purchase will be a Supraphonic. Really nice grooves on the video! Take care, BD

  • @bdslingerland Just kind of medium tight top and pretty cranked on the bottom. Lately it's sounding better and better. Great drums.

  • Would recent Supraphonic bronze sound as good as your 1981 model you think? I ordered on via Ebay,a new supraphonic bronze snare.

  • I think you will be very happy. I really dig my bronze Supra. Let me know how it goes! Take care and all the best - pk

  • you remind me of steve gadd

  • Ha! Well, we have the same number of limbs . . . Thanks very much for the comment. He is a hero to me. So I listened to many of his recordings and I guess that will always be a part of my playing. Thanks for posting - trout.

  • 1 and 9 definately sound the best to my ear.
