Thank goodness we've got this airbase and these aircraft to protect us. Oh hang on a minute, i forgot - Adolf Cameron and Josef Clegg have just closed down the lot.
My dad was based at Kinloss in the 1950's. He was a photographer on coastal command. His job was to take pics of Soviet shipping and aircraft. He flew in Shackletons then Neptunes.
I had the honor of going to Kinloss in the late 90's I was P-3's in the Navy and I even went on a mission with a Nimrod crew. What great memories and a beautiful base and country.
I remember doing an ATC gliding course at Kinloss in the mid 80's. On one occassion the tower cleared us to taxi and take off ahead of a Nimrod. Bouncing along the taxiway in a little Slingsby Venture motorglider, we passed by the Nimrod at it's holding point, I can clearly remember it's pilot giving me a thumbs up sign from the cockpit. I felt really special that day and have never forgotten the way I felt.
