@mcrfreako1011 But not when you are trying to play timpani toms, because they were often what classical drummers played with Classical music. His point was that traditional grip worked best on a 5 piece drum set, at least in his opinion. Neil Peart changes back and for depending on the music. This does show that Buddy knew how to play matched grip at least.

@96jamesjin He's using matched because that's how you play timpanis. If you notice Krupa in Sing, Sing, Sing he does the same thing while on the toms (which are basically modified timpanis), but when he gets to the snare he switches to traditional.
@knickerbocker191 first of all, timpani is the plural form of the world; not timpanis. the singular form is timpano. (i.e. "i'm fucking your mom on top of a timpano" ; "i can play timpani like a motherfucker." secondly, how the FUCK are toms anywhere near being "modified timpani"? tom toms are completely different from timpani. i hope you aren't a drummer/percussionist because if you don't even know the terminology, and especially the timpani-tom line of thinking...that's pretty scary. facepalm
@reelgangstazskip why so much anger? drumming is about timing, taste, technique, and fun, not lexical knowledge. And I said toms were "basically modified timpanis" to help illustrate a point - they can serve a similar function (low sound) as the timpani (happy?) in orchestral drumming. plus, buddy rich himself calls them "timpanis" in the "why he doesn't use match grip" video (11 sec mark) so that's good enough for me. go find someone to give you a hug or something dude, seriously...
@reelgangstazskip HAHAHA Thanks for the schooling! I said timpanis above. But, I just came away from the Rich video of him explaining why he doesn't use matchgrip on normal kits. But, he said, sure matchgrip is great for timpani playing because that's how you're supposed to play them. Buddy Rich is a drumming GOD!

@96jamesjin YEAH! OMG I just came away from his video explaining why he doesn't use it! HAHAHAH But, this is when he was much younger....AND he's mostly playing timpani? I don't know. But, he said in that video that's how you play timpanis. But, still, doesn't matter. The guy's a FUCKING BEAST!
This is from 1948 not the '1930's' and there is no apostrophe needed in '1930s' as it is a plural. Buddy launched the first of his own big bands in the late 1940s after
serving with Artie Shaw and Tommy Dorsey and the U.S. Marines.
That's a great clip you've posted and I thank you for doing so but it's not from the 1930's. Buddy spent the 30's in the Bunny Berigan, Artie Shaw and Tommy Dorsey ochestras and didn't start his own band until the 1940's (The music stands here have his initials meaning this is his band). This clip, judging by the lapels on the jackets, could be the late 40's or early 50's.

@metalfiend124 I forgot to check if buddy played matched or traditional on the drum battle with animal on the muppet show.

This film has been cut and shortened. It is from the late 40s, not the 30s. This was when he had his first band.

this shows how good vintage drums sound, because i swear you cant find any really nice sounding kits without them having to be miced up

Yes...Metal owes much more to Jazz and classical music(Bach especially) than it does to the blues, imo.

@knickerbocker191 noooo. Actually, he's said that when he's just going off (freestyling) he'll use match grip. It hasn't a thing to do with timpani.
