They laid it aside and finally stopped work on it in 1943. They sunk it in April 1945 to keep the enemy from capturing it, the Russians raised it again to explore it, and finally used it as a test target in the Baltic sea. After cutting the lines just before a storm, they finally sunk it with torpedoes in 1947.

Well considering the ruling to abandon surviors was made after a US bomber bombed a U-boat full of british civilians, including women and children, that had been recovered from a troop ship that had been doubling as a passenger ship. Even after the U-boat gave the US it's position and asked for help in the rescue! It wasn't that hard to be angry at the US. (Look up the Laconia incident)

my great uncle was killed January 3,1943 when Fregattenkapitän Harro Schacht's Unterseeboot 507 torpedoedand sank the Baron Dechmont off the coast of brazil. within days(13 Jan.,1943 he was attacked and sunk with his entire crew as well as the captain of the Baron Dechmont who was taken aboard as a prisoner of war. The Laconia was carrying Italian prisoners of war with allied guards.
