Rotary Wing - Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan - the Osprey is our favorite mode of getting anywhere. Fast as hell and it's an amazing rush to ride in these when those wings rotate from lift to forward flight. Thank you for your service men and Rite on Marines!!

We worked with these dogs during OIF 07-09 around Mahmudiyah. They're okay as cargo and troop transports in non-hostile environments. But in combat? Worthless. No guns. No missiles. No optics. They can't fight. They can only carry.

@icomethird Yes it can for a while, but at altitude as the air thins it loses some lift. I've see it accelerate in a low slope dive pull up into vertical to about 8,000ft then transition to helicopter mode roll into a dive transition back to airplane mode (7 seconds) then pull up to a stall transition back to helicopter and do a rolling touch and go. This bird rocks!
The rotors can tilt vertical to make landings and hover like a helicopter but it can fly much longer ranges and much faster like a plane when its blades are tilted forward.
Basically its made small compromises in the speed of a normal plane and the maneuverability of a heli to obtain both. A great trade off it you ask me.
I dont think any other country have this increible expensive chopter...russians made somthin similar, engines didnt move but it have one propeller on the fron and one over the engine

From Airforcetimes website: crash investigation of Osprey in Qalat Afghan. April 2010 revealed engine failure. Military wanted chief investigator to change his report to "pilot error". "The stresses of flying in the dirt and dust of Afghanistan probably caused the engine problems" BGen. Harvel, chief investigator said. He was not allowed to brief the families of the 4 KIA onboard. Maybe Airforce wants to coverup the reliability problems of this overpriced $67M helo?
@AccordGTR After having the privilege to read the actual crash report. They landed outside their landing zone hitting a rock with said engine (not engine failure) and a ditch. Which by any account the aircraft actually saved many lives. As any other aircraft having such a incident would have had many more fatalities. As of right now, the record shows that the V-22 is statistically the safest rotorcraft in the Marines inventory.
@phantumdrummer How did they miss the LZ? Were they landing in a hover? From what I read, the LZ at Qalat is above 5000 ft. altitude but some military pilots found that the Osprey does not hover well in Afghanistan above 4000 ft. altitude with a standard payload so that control of the aircraft under those conditions are marginal. Besides, what the US military releases to the public is questionable and sometimes deceiving. We won't know the real story until after some time, if ever.
@AccordGTR It was basic loss of visual and spacial awareness by the lead aircraft while landing in low visibility conditions. Simply put... they fucked up. This is why there has been so little news since. The AF hates admitting pilot error. I hope I haven't already said too much so far, but I just couldn't let the ignorance and/or miss-information go on.
@phantumdrummer BS! Every school kid knows about instruments-only landing systems or ILS. The V-22 has the latest avionics that even a freshman flying schoolboy could fly. Marine pilots are highly trained like no other aviators. Plus there are 2 pilots flying it, right? No way can it be pilot error. Official investigators said it was engine failure probably because of the high altitude of the LZ and the inability of the V-22 to hover safely at that altitude under that load.
@AccordGTR Do you even have any clue as to how ILS works? You might want to do some learning before you make yourself look like an idiot. When you land OFF FIELD there is NO ILS system for the pilot to use. Even the best auto land system requires ground based antenna's to send information to which the avionics then uses to figure the aircraft location. Those antenna's are ONLY at airfields. Even the newest GPS don't give you precession land capability OFF FIELD. It is TOTALLY up to the pilot.
@phantumdrummer I know that but even without ILS the avionics would allow the pilot to "see" through dust and fog . They can even land at night with no lights.

I am not an arm chair player in this situation. I personally work with the CV-22 and have done so on every CV-22 ever made. Believe me, I know exactly what this aircraft can and can not do.
@danning1 its too expensive, complex, loud and unreliable for the common man to travel in. Boeing 737-600 costs the same as an Osprey but can carry at least 3-5x the cargo or passengers at almost double the speed and 50% more range. So imagine paying 3x-5x the cost of a ticket for a regular commercial flight. Osprey is only good for military purposes while helicopter can be for both

Awesome aircraft I can think of a lot capabilities that this aircraft can do. If I were part of the design team I would have made it 3 to 6 feet longer so that the aircraft could have 2 machine gunners behind the cockpit. I also would have made it wide enough for a Jeep or Hummvee and crew. Well we'll have to see what becomes of the V-44 Quad Rotor.
@88ABRAMS88 currently,only the USAF & USMC are using them..im not sure if the USN is using the V-22..as far as i know,no other nations are using the V-22
@f39eagle2 a number of foreign nations are looking into to it. The UK in particular is considering it for thier AEW carrier craft when the Queen Elizabeth Class Carriers are finished.
As far as i know the USN and US Army are also considering it in several roles and i imagine once a few more of the kinks are worked out everyone interested will put in orders.

@HeavensMercy The CV/MV-22 has killed less that 34 Service members from first flight to present day, first flight was in 1989 of the original V-22. To put that in perspective; the CH-46 has killed as many in the last decade, the UH-1 has killed more in the last 5 years, the CH-53 has killed as many and possibly more(have not followed it to closely), the UH-60 has killed almost three times that count. @HeavensMercy Before you get bent out of shape I sent you that list to inform you, a lot of people were mislead by the media about the dangers involved with this aircraft. I have flown in the UH-1, Ch-46, Ch-53, and the MV-22. The ride is better and a bit more comfortable in the 22 than the others, however no matter how many times I rode on the damn thing the transition always scared the shit out of me. The whole rest of the flight and overall I would take the 22 over the others any day

its a fail design so much money wasted for it. gotta admit it looks cool but very poor regarding the unit cost increasing dramatically every year. it costed 18 million originally now its 80 million lol. also the lack of the autorotation makes it the most dangerous helicopter cuz no way to land safely when u got hit.
The funky contraption, many crashed and killed many crew in testing. Can they take a RPG? I doubt it big helo with gunship escort is a better and more affordable solution. One armchair generals opinion.

@AccordGTR After having the privilege to read the actual crash report. They landed outside their landing zone hitting a rock with said engine (not engine failure) and a ditch. Which by any account the aircraft actually saved many lives. As any other aircraft having such a incident would have had many more fatalities. As of right now, the record shows that the V-22 is statistically the safest rotorcraft in the Marines inventory.

@phantumdrummer How did they miss the LZ? Were they landing in a hover? From what I read, the LZ at Qalat is above 5000 ft. altitude but some military pilots found that the Osprey does not hover well in Afghanistan above 4000 ft. altitude with a standard payload so that control of the aircraft under those conditions are marginal. Besides, what the US military releases to the public is questionable and sometimes deceiving. We won't know the real story until after some time, if ever.

@AccordGTR It was basic loss of visual and spacial awareness by the lead aircraft while landing in low visibility conditions. Simply put... they fucked up. This is why there has been so little news since. The AF hates admitting pilot error. I hope I haven't already said too much so far, but I just couldn't let the ignorance and/or miss-information go on.

@phantumdrummer BS! Every school kid knows about instruments-only landing systems or ILS. The V-22 has the latest avionics that even a freshman flying schoolboy could fly. Marine pilots are highly trained like no other aviators. Plus there are 2 pilots flying it, right? No way can it be pilot error. Official investigators said it was engine failure probably because of the high altitude of the LZ and the inability of the V-22 to hover safely at that altitude under that load.

@AccordGTR Do you even have any clue as to how ILS works? You might want to do some learning before you make yourself look like an idiot. When you land OFF FIELD there is NO ILS system for the pilot to use. Even the best auto land system requires ground based antenna's to send information to which the avionics then uses to figure the aircraft location. Those antenna's are ONLY at airfields. Even the newest GPS don't give you precession land capability OFF FIELD. It is TOTALLY up to the pilot.

@AccordGTR Yes, we can give them all the info in the world, but when they fly in too fast with too great of a decent rate, things will always end up badly. Just read the reports I sent you via PM. Hopefully you will have a much more clear understanding of what truly occurred.
I am not an arm chair player in this situation. I personally work with the CV-22 and have done so on every CV-22 ever made. Believe me, I know exactly what this aircraft can and can not do.

@danning1 its too expensive, complex, loud and unreliable for the common man to travel in. Boeing 737-600 costs the same as an Osprey but can carry at least 3-5x the cargo or passengers at almost double the speed and 50% more range. So imagine paying 3x-5x the cost of a ticket for a regular commercial flight. Osprey is only good for military purposes while helicopter can be for both

Awesome aircraft I can think of a lot capabilities that this aircraft can do. If I were part of the design team I would have made it 3 to 6 feet longer so that the aircraft could have 2 machine gunners behind the cockpit. I also would have made it wide enough for a Jeep or Hummvee and crew. Well we'll have to see what becomes of the V-44 Quad Rotor.

@88ABRAMS88 currently,only the USAF & USMC are using them..im not sure if the USN is using the V-22..as far as i know,no other nations are using the V-22

@f39eagle2 a number of foreign nations are looking into to it. The UK in particular is considering it for thier AEW carrier craft when the Queen Elizabeth Class Carriers are finished.
As far as i know the USN and US Army are also considering it in several roles and i imagine once a few more of the kinks are worked out everyone interested will put in orders.

@f39eagle2 i think the USN mainly just uses chinooks because the USN is more o a supply moving force most of the time these days. The V22 was made for combat missions only.

@HeavensMercy The CV/MV-22 has killed less that 34 Service members from first flight to present day, first flight was in 1989 of the original V-22. To put that in perspective; the CH-46 has killed as many in the last decade, the UH-1 has killed more in the last 5 years, the CH-53 has killed as many and possibly more(have not followed it to closely), the UH-60 has killed almost three times that count. All these aircraft have been fully operational for three decades or longer, the osprey: 4yrs

@HeavensMercy Before you get bent out of shape I sent you that list to inform you, a lot of people were mislead by the media about the dangers involved with this aircraft. I have flown in the UH-1, Ch-46, Ch-53, and the MV-22. The ride is better and a bit more comfortable in the 22 than the others, however no matter how many times I rode on the damn thing the transition always scared the shit out of me. The whole rest of the flight and overall I would take the 22 over the others any day

its a fail design so much money wasted for it. gotta admit it looks cool but very poor regarding the unit cost increasing dramatically every year. it costed 18 million originally now its 80 million lol. also the lack of the autorotation makes it the most dangerous helicopter cuz no way to land safely when u got hit.
